Im about to become homeless

I am, thank you for asking. :)
I did end up actually being "homeless" for about 3 months, and slept on a friends couch.
I started working as a Lyft driver, but became horribly I'll after a huge mold problem in the home I was living in last year, and had to evacuate. The landlord demanded I continue ti pay rent even though the home could not be safely accessed, which led to me ultimately having to couch surf.

I found a job, and then a much better job, and have now recovered a lot healthwise, have a cheap apartment, and have even begun taking care of another person who was in a similar situation. I can honestly say I'm the happiest ive ever been.
I have two beautiful girlfriends, a nice job, a roof over my head, and my health is the best its been in years.

Thank you everyone for your support and concern. :)

Also, necrobumper, I hope you get the help you need :)
Wait... what? lol

I still can't get over the fact that cereals seem to be your main concern. I mean, you could also just eat something else for breakfast for a while

The homeless shelter does offer breakfast, but they're more greasy alternatives like omelettes, hashbrowns, or things like bagels. I'm trying to keep healthy alternatives available as much as I can.

If you've got an Aldi in your area, they've got fresh fruits and vegetables, cheap meat, and likely a hot plate. Good luck to you.

Thanks! I'll continue to buy fruits from the grocery store as I currently do, just in smaller quantities since I won't have very much room to store them. Meats I've pretty much given up on, but I only ever ate chicken anyway so it's not a huge loss.

How do you plan on keeping milk cold? You'd have better luck. Making oatmeal than eating cereal. Just go into a gas station that sells coffee and get a mug of hot water from the machine (use your own cup). Then add it to the bowl of instant oatmeal.

I don't drink or use milk for oatmeal or cereal so that's not a concern thankfully! That seems like a lot of work just to get a bowl of oatmeal made every morning though, which is why I'm opting for cereals instead.

"Hey GAF I'm about to be homeless anyway lets talk about the sodium content of Cheerios crazy right?"

Like I mentioned before, I have other things like hygiene and looking for apartments planned out as best I can, so this was my current concern. If I thought I needed GAF's advice for any of those other things, I would have asked for it. You're welcome to joke about me trying to eat healthy, but I think you'd end up looking like the asshole in that scenario.

If money isn't an issue why don't you couch surf or ask a friend for a sofa?

I have literally no friends to speak of and going on 27 I'm not too keen on the idea of staying with my family (even for a short time).

EDIT: Thanks for all the suggestions! I should be good with what's been recommended.

Is there a legitimate reason against staying with your family or is it just a pride thing?

I'm glad you've made it over the bump but whaaaat
I'm a polyamorous lesbian :P
Oh

This thread has been a rollercoaster of emotions. From the lowest depths to soaring heights.

On a more serious note, im glad to hear the OP(/s?) Are doing well and have things mostly sorted.

Mental health is extremely important but unfortunately is one of the last things to be addressed. On top of significant amounts of stigma towards it, there really isn't enough support for mental health.

Everyone needs to know that someone out there is willing to listen and wants to see them do well, whether it be a complete stranger or not.

Hadn't heard of Grape Nuts before, but I was surprised to see it and Bran Flakes both had a good chunk of Sodium too. It could just be the brand names though. Shredded Wheat I totally forgot about but that's a great recommendation!

It is very difficult to dodge sodium in processed foods. You'll probably have to bite the bullet on this one. At least as far as cereals go, grape nuts and shredded wheat are relatively healthy due to their lower sugar and high fiber content.

Good to hear you got back on your feet. I live in Omaha too. I worked for the Salvation Army as a security guard a few years ago. I am only aware of government assisted living and the food pantries around town. There's also a shuttle downtown that goes to the Open Door Mission for free.

Since you've got a job now then you might not need to know or you're already aware of. If you need another job you could always look at careerlink.com or monster.com. There's also a few staffing places around town. I always see Taco Bell hiring signs and a few other places as well. I've heard fork lifting pays decent, but if you want a second job then you could try looking around town.

There's a hotline you can call. Heartland of America and I think they can help with bills but you have to call fast because they run out of their budgeted monthly allowance. If I remember the number I'll post it

called all the local charities I could find that aren't anti lgbt.

call all of the ones that are assholes as well. Also mention to nobody your mental problems.

edit: oh... I see, its a bump. Oh well. OP, you mention a LOT of health problems as well as mentioning mold in a place you were living. I'm not saying none of those things are true but

I suffer from schizophrenia, anxiety, depression, and cluster headaches, as well as just physical pain,

I would immediately question based on the above, how bad the problem was, being that I've never heard of anyone evacuating a house due to mold until now (and I was a student in NZ, I saw some houses that could probably be better classified as a plant).

I'm a polyamorous lesbian :P

Congrats, I am glad to hear your story has a happy ending! Speaking of Polyamory, I suggest you find out if there's a local Poly community where you are, if you haven't done so already. They can be of great help, trust me. Local Poly communities are usually plugged into all kinds of social programs and charities, but they are also great for emotional support when or if you need it.

Are you questioning the veracity of OP? Why. I mean, she posted in the thread again saying everything is better and her health is better. A person who lied about their health wouldn't say that.

But regardless of all that... why doubt the OP?

Is there a legitimate reason against staying with your family or is it just a pride thing?

See HC's posts on the first page.

I just keep learning new things from this thread.

Going to think about which cereals to buy now.

Worrying about the health of your food's probably one of the more sensible worries when going homeless, you can't exactly take a break from EATING afterall. I think you could balance out the sodium with increased water however.

I dont mind if you believe me or not, I'm just happy to be out and better :)
When I first moved into that house the one thing I asked the landlord to fix was a problem with the pipes and there being no water pressure. They flat out out refused to investigate because "the previous tenant never complained" and eventually it turned out a pipe burst and turned the the second basement and my spare room (I never opened the door because I didnt even have any furniture at this point. I tried to spend as little time at home as possible) became completely covered in mold. Like... Ceilings, walls, floors. The room was putting off heat, and I was bedridden for a few days before I noticed what was going on. They actually had to evacuate the whole building because the pipe burst went unnoticed for like a month and the other floors got mold in the walls or something. They've been renovating since October and as far as I know its still not habitable.

Wow Hollycat! Im so glad you are okay!! and happy! And have 2 girlfriends!

This is why I love GAF. Thread started in the slums and ended up great, with a trip to high sodium Cheerios in the middle.

Congrats OP

Yes, mold making a dwelling unlivable is a thing.

If pictures are posted do we get a tag bet or something?

EDIT: By the way, mold is a fungus not a plant

Maybe you could suck it up and do something perfectly normal and rational like asking family (especially at only 27) instead of sucking up shelter resources? The ones near me are generally overflowing and full of people with literally no choice. If you have one, you should take it. A homeless shelter is not a hotel. Let someone who needs it have that spot.
