I'm Afraid to Play Final Fantasy

Come on, how could you leave FFV out of that list? If you care about gameplay, it is one of the best thanks to the jobs system.

Story didn't grip me. And the part where a member dies and a new member jumps in with their exact same level and abilities etc bugs me. Which I understand is just a gameplay thing but it just bugs me.

Also when I played it, his name was "Butz"

I haven't extensively played the other ports, but the PS1 (and NES) version of FF 1 has a crazy high encounter rate. It's the closest experience you'll get to the original release though, just with bug fixes and a new coat of paint. The GBA and PSP games are too mechanically different and neutered in difficulty, but if you just want to get it out of the way then play those versions. The original feels like a grind but I personally don't see much of a point in playing the PSP/GBA remakes since the game has barely any plot or characterization to begin with, so you're not getting much of anything with the challenge gone.

You bring up a good point. I think I might just wait to play the Origins version whenever I get the money for it. I just want to celebrate the series' 30th anniversary by playing as many entries as possible. I think in the meantime I just replay as many of the ones I have access to.

Also where is everyone getting that I've never played a Final Fantasy before? I've played most of them and even said I played the SNES trilogy and III in my opening post.

Get Final Fantasy XII remaster next month. Have a good time with it and encounters will be something you run towards rather than hope they stop happening.

Then try Final Fantasy Tactics, and retry VI again someday when you feel like you can settle into it and be more receptive, patient with the random encounter design. It really is worth it.

Even though I grew up in the era, I had to get used to random battles and learn to go with the flow too. I remember renting Breath of Fire or something as a kid and running from battles, being under leveled, consequentially only having enough money to stockpile potions and barely make it through another dungeon or two by exhausting my supply and funds, and never being able to afford conveniently timed new equipment at every town. By then I'd hit a brick wall and it was time to return the game to the video store.

Just fight them as you go, and you don't even think about it after awhile. Not quite the same nowadays, with how convenient and diverse design has gotten... but people are essentially the same.

What's your problem with Butz? Butz is best name.

Unlike Princess Salsa.

For FF1 either the GBA or PSP version, though the NES version isn't that bad.

If tou do play FFII, absolutely postively do not play the Famicom version. GBA or PSP. FFII is bullshit hard in the original.

It's available in the PSN store so you can get it for your PSP/Vita/PS3.

This, although FF3 also deserves mention for the utterly insane difficulty bump that is its final dungeon. Long too and can be especially harrowing if going for the optional ultimate weapon fights within.

Three does have a hard final dungeon, I kind of forgot about that. With a good build it's not terrible but it's such a ridiculous spike in difficulty to the rest of the game. Five had a better balance. Three they seemed so worried about any class being too weak that they made them all too powerful.

Not trying to shitpost, but aside from 4, 6, 9, and 12, they're not very good games.

Have you heard of our lord and savior Persona?

Really? Persona has 2 good entries (2 and 5). 3 and 4 are cringe as fuck and 1 is unplayable. See. Can shitpost any series.

Ignore this guy OP.

1 is an endearing game, simple but the entire product is a work of love and is infinitely replayable.

2 is a game that only the most dedicated of fans will enjoy. It's a lot more fun to play a non-easy version of the game, it'll just take time. It's one of the first "Everybody dies" games out there.

3 is charming as fuck on the NES and the DS remake is actually quite playable.

4 while being full of tropes was really engaging at the time. Now it's type of game has been done to death but when it first came out it was mind blowing. Also as a kid landing on the moon was insane!

5 is probably the best job-based (class) system I've played in an RPG. They are all very unique and fun to play and it has so much replay-ability to try new builds (unless you 100 percent it but that's no fun)

6 is my 2nd favourite. Large cast of characters, GOAT villain, phenomenal music. Just perfect from beginning to end.

7 is most people's favourite game (some of all time). To say it's a bad game is just being ignorant and rude.

8 has an amazing story marred by questionable gameplay decisions.

9 is my favourite in the series. It's a love letter to fans of the early titles.

10 has Zanarkand, one of the best songs in the series, and a loveable cast of characters.

12 is either a terrible game or a great game. If you spent some time messing with Gambits you'll love it. If you didn't and tried to brute force it you'll hate it. I don't know many in the middle ground.

13 is as divisive as 2 and 8. I never finished it, I'll probably never play it again. Some people say it's amazing though.

15 is one of the funnest combat systems I've ever played in an RPG and a loveable bunch of degenerates on an adventure together.

Ignore the shit post, enjoy the series. It's highs are some of the best in JRPG history, I find Dragon Quest more consistent in quality though.

This is a good post. Personally, I would recommend 6, 7, 9, and maybe 10 (not a huge fan myself but lots of people love it) as a start. Most people who enjoy the series like these games. Alternatively if you want to go back a bit, 4 on either PSP/Vita or DS version could be interesting but not where I would start.

To add the "these are the only ones worth playing":

FF1 (gotta know your history)
FF4 (the best one)
FF6 (the other best one)
FF7 (the new era)
FF8 (good story and characters imo)
FFX (new new era)

That's it.

Also Chrono Trigger.
I disagree. I think all of them are worth playing in their own ways. It should be taken on a personal level, based on what the player likes. Final Fantasy is not a one-size-fits-all kind of series.

Edit:

Get Origins on PS1, it retains the original dificulty and gameplay, but without the frustrating parts, I think the PSP changed a lot of stuff, not sure about that last thing though

I seriously disagree with the people saying to avoid the first 3. 2 is unlike anything I've played before or since and is a huge breath of fresh air. It's stupidly hard at parts, especially if you aren't aware of the many hidden mechanics (metal armor makes magic miss?), but it's so rewarding to grind up your evade stat by dual wielding shields until you literally cannot be hit.

I will just say one thing.

Final Fantasy IX.

It was my first FF game. No regrets.

My advice to anyone who asks which one to play first (don't play all of them, you will def burn yourself out) will always be FFIX.

I have a question. I'm finally playing something this year. I booted up my Chronicles version of IV on my PS3, but I notice some weird stuff. Objects in the environment have this black shadow that constantly flashes around them. It's annoying. Is there something wrong with my disc or is it the PS3's emulation?

It's the emulation. Same thing happens with mine.

I'm playing the original for the first then because I would like to do a review for it. It's a slog of a game. Play a remake of it unless you want the real experience. Really dislike how hard it is to recharge spells.
