i'm back, baby, i'm back! (this thread is about pc gaming)

Don't get Pirates!. The original was awesome back in the day, but the remake didn't add really anything worthwhile and it gets old in an hour, if not sooner.

"Maybe I just don't have the same definition of RPG games. Sorry about that."

Baldur's Gate fits the definition of RPG that you gave KOTOR. You're just wrong. And given the roots of Baldur's Gate and other RPGs, their history sorta predates the style of RPGs like Skies of Arcadia and Chrono Trigger by at least a decade.

if i'm not mistaken all of your screenshots are from eastern rpgs.
its just a wild guess, but perhaps because eastern rpgs share most of their basic concepts and thus are easily identified you call them 'real' rpgs.
western rpgs, on the other hand, offer a wide rane of interpretation of the word rpg. compare, for example 'oblivion' to 'temple of elemental evil'. one is 1st person real time, the other is isometric turnbased (and even based on d&d rules), yet BOTH ARE RPGs!

Lies! All lies! Also, if he didn't play the original, the entire thing would be new to him

Excellent game. Just don't play the "sequel", invisible war. First one rocks from all angles. It's like any shooter, but with items like System Shock and a cool story. Definite must-have for any PC gamer.

Indeed every pc gamer should play and complete Deus Ex. EVERYONE.

Lolz, I don't even like games like Baldur's Gate/Torment but I'm not daft enough to say they aren't RPGs.

I have had broadband for years and I sure as hell will never play online multiplayer games anymore. ****, unless I like know you, it's not worth the effort.

well, i don't know if i can deal with the... ancient 3d graphics in thief 2...

also, is there some sort of hi-res texture mod or some other mod for games like deus ex or system shock 2 that will improve their visuas for today's systems?

no, 5 mbit should be fast enough. i just don't like multiplayer games. i have no fun with them at all.

kind of on the fence about syberia. read a couple of reviews. i'm just not feeling it...
but i'm interested in sherlock holmes. putting it on the list.
myst is NOT for me.
played the first 'longest journey'. really liked it. but the sequel... i don't know. the gameplay sounds kinda lame.
i got still life, tried to play it and realised that i had ordered the german version which has no english language option. and the german voice work is absolutely terrible. i had to stop playing after 15 minutes. i think i will have to import the uk version.

Oh, and if you are thinking of picking up a Thief game jarosh, go for 2, it is dirt cheap and the best of the 3 Thief games.
yeah, but again, the graphics...

Go for Max Payne 2, Thief 2+3...they are cheap as hell and fun to play :)

And then go and get bloodmoney while you are at it ;)

i'm also pretty interested in the thief series. although i think i will only get thief 3.

It's already been said, but, ****, don't start with Thief 3. Different developer, a different look, way inferior audio, and the whole game just put me to sleep in an instant. Don't do it.

Don't play any of 'em if you can't play the first. I did it a little over a year ago, the technology is bearable.

oh man. you guys are giving me a hard time. i really don't know. the first one looks so ugly by today's standards. i know deus ex has a strong focus on story and storytelling so i guess i can deal with it there.

Yeah and I said :

I know, I didn't either, it lacks everything the game does have ( full freedom, great storyline, compelling missions and it's hard too ).

I'd say give it a try, if you don't like it you can pimpslap me :lol

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Congrats, that was the most retarded thing I've ever read on this forum. There's such a thing as diversity-- Japan's interpretation of the Role-Playing game isn't the de facto template for the genre.

Can we please get him a "Japan invented the RPG" tag?

Holy crap @ this thread, mike thinks to be a "real" rpg it has to be traditional turn based? bahahahahaha. BG2, the mother****ing lord of RPGs, KOTOR's daddy (and not dumbed down) not an rpg? clueless, omg so clueless.

Anyway, to the OP, since you're interested in adventure games and seem to be trying to find an rpg, i would recommend Anachronox

Its more of an adventure than an RPG but still rpg nonetheless, really charming cast of characters, awesome unique story, it'll make you sad and most often augh your ass off.

Its using a modified Quake 2 engine, so its not like the most pretty game around but im still blown away just how far they pushed the graphic engine for this game. The environments are also just good enough looking to pull you in.

Its abandonware, the dev house who made this no longer exists and eidos dropped its production and support so no matter the way you find it, do it :p

ok i checked out most of the rpgs teknopathetic listed. and the only one that really interests me is vampire bloodlines. guess i'm not much of an isometric/top down rpg guy. i'm quite picky with rpgs. don't know why. obviously i'm not like that with fpses.

MMaRsu said:

okay look i got almost no excuses left. what about this one: i didn't like the predecessors at all.

Then this game will blow you away! :lol

( I don't know what to say, just try it out and if you don't like it > thrashcan ;) )

{Mike} said:
Then you don't know what is an RPG, do you? Baldur's Gate is an hack'n'slash game like Diablo, same with NWN. You are right with Kotor and Oblivion, even if they are not traditionnal rpgs (turn by turn, interactive turns or whatever). Plus, they are also available on consoles, so these examples only justifies my statement. No good RPG on PC.

Moron total confirmed.

not sure about far cry. should i play far cry, gaf?
i played far cry instincts on xbox and got bored after a couple of hours. i know i'll have more fun with kb/m and the game is supposedly quite different on the pc anyway. soooo...?

yeah, what about the money i spend, you know, to buy it?

Back on topic, here are some suggestions for non RPG/Adventure/Shooter genres:

Strategy:
Rise of Legends
Civilization IV
The Movies
Black and White 2

Simulation:
The Sims 2 (I hate it but the whole world loves it and the whole world is rarely wrong..)
Lock-On: Modern Air Combat + Flaming Cliffs
GT-R
GT Legends

EDIT: Far Cry sucks ass, skip it. The graphics are lush and interesting for a few hours, and then it grows old and you realize it actually looks pretty bad. The gameplay is repetitive, the AI is atrocious and the story blows.

jarosh said:

What I sometimes do if I question if a game is worth my money, I grab the game somewhere else, and then I play the first two levels. If I like it, I'll buy it, if not then no money wasted!

Kinda frowned upon this method, but it works perfect for me :). I still buy alot of games :)

Yeah, I hate the whole Sims experience too. Anyway. Mind if I ask why you hate strategy games?

yeah i'm not really into 'grabbing it somewhere else'.
know what, if i'm done with all the backlog and have nothing else to play i'll give it a shot.

i guess i just hate thinking.
no really, i can't explain it. i just NEED a story. and i NEED to be on my own in games. i don't like commanding troops or being a god like creature. i feel exposed in strategy games. yeah, that's really weird i know.

Hmm, since Demi isn't here; Advent Rising.

it's kinda hard to explain stuff like this. i tried diablo and... i just didn't like it. i know that i have very particular taste in games. there are many great games i just don't "get".

All you need.

Edit: Ahh, you said no strategy games. There goes 80% of what is good on PC. Stick to consoles, buddy.

Jarosh, if you like FPS you should be playing Valve games like CS:S, DOD:S and maybe some of the other Steam games (The Ship, Red Orchestra, SiN).

All are top notch games.

Then why did you upgrade your PC? :lol Seriously, if you look at the market nowadays, most games are either strategy, multiplayer or MMO. Sure, there are also many FPS-games for PC and you could validate your purchase with that, but many of those are very multiplayer-focused too. Most adventures and action games can also be played on consoles and outside of Oblivion (which is on X360 too), there hasn't been any truly great western RPG for quite a while.

So all in all, looking at your preferences, you wouldn't really need a very powerful PC like you have now. Most of the great singleplayer FPS, western RPG's, adventures and action games are from a couple of years ago or more. All you could probably hope for in regards to new PC games is that there will be some more great singleplayer FPS in the future, as well as more great western RPG's (NWN2, Gothic 3). Oh, of course there's also the occasional point 'n click adventure, but those aren't true resource hoggers.

half-life 2
hl2 episodes 1, 2, 3
sin episodes
doom 3 + resurrection of evil
prey
thief 3
f.e.a.r.
f.e.a.r. extraction point
bioshock
quake 4
vampire bloodlines
gothic 3
dark messiah of might and magic
neverwinter nights 2
crysis
hellgate london

it's only a selection. and enough for me to justify upgrading my pc. i couldn't run any of these games at reasonable framerates/resolutions with my old card. and if i hadn't bought oblivion for the 360 i'd sure as hell play it on my pc now. i can't stand console fps controls and that is one of the main reasons i got a new card.

can we get back on topic now?

Jarosh, I know you don´t want MMOs, but may I suggest you try some free trial?

Is free and you can have fun (I would reccomend WoW, as shitty as the endgame it is, the first days you develop a character are really fun and is nice to see the world). For someone who is sure that is not going to pay monthly for a MMO, but have a nice new computer to try things, I would reccomend doing this).

And about Far Cry, if you find it cheap and want to see some beautiful enviroments with your new card, yes, but it gets pretty dumb when you advance on it.

Ark fatalis is pretty hardcore for nowaday standards (like Gothic) , but definetely enjoyable if you want some RPG after Oblivion (and is a completely different setting).

Other thing, I´m prettu sure they are graphical upgrades for Deus Ex and Thief II (you will have updated graphics, but don´t expect miracles).

Join our squad! :D

I would get the BF2 Deluxe Edition, has the expansion and the original. Both are played a lot, and weapon unlocks are so much faster with SF, lol. I just got into the game a month ago.

Pirates! is loads of fun, don't skip out on this game. It's probably $20 at Fry's.

yeah, well i'm not going to play wow. ever. really, there's nothing that could ever convince me.

but i'm still kind of on the fence about far cry. what exactly are the differences between the xbox and the pc version?... gaf?

Far Cry instincts is just a different game. Meaning, the plotline, levels, blah blah.
