• Hey Guest. Check out your NeoGAF Wrapped 2025 results here!

I'm buying Bloodborne basically blind with barely seeing any media. Ever done this?

Yes, I'm doing it with this game right now.

The only thing I've seen related to the game is the PS4 E3 reveal. Pre-ordered it a few weeks ago.

I think I've seen one Bloodborne trailer, but not much else. I've been interested for a while so it wasn't just hype in my case.

That's not unusual for me. If I think I'll like a game, I try not to oversaturate myself with the details. I'll maybe check out some written previews or look at a few screens though.

Edit: I haven't preordered yet, but I'm going digital, so there's no rush.

I've watched some of the media out there, but avoided the big spoilers (like the boss on the PS Blog).

Honestly, screenshots/trailers for Demon Souls wouldn't do it justice...it was the gameplay that really made the game unique. I am guessing Bloodborne will be similar.

I have had the CE pre-ordered for many months, and can't wait to dig into it. This (and my backlog) will keep me very busy until The Witcher 3.

I've bought a lot of games blind.

Sometimes I've been burned (Blood Omen 2, Tomb Raider: Angel of Darkness).

Sometimes I've been pleasantly surprised or blown away (Demon's Souls, Persona 4 Golden).

The unifying theme of all of the games I buy is that I buy games that interest. I'm not particularly susceptible to "GAF consensus" or any kind of consensus. I'll listen to suggestions from my friends, but if the game(s) aren't already in a genre that I personally find interesting, I often won't even take suggestions. Many of the times I've purchased games because of hype on NeoGAF, I've been burned and disappointed. Most of the time, actually. I've given in once or twice, and picked up a game based on GAF impressions that I've subsequently enjoyed, but it's also been titles that I was already into the genre/developer beforehand.

What's really helped me is PlayStation Plus, oddly enough. Because of all of the free games I get a month (PS3, PS4, and Vita owner), and some really awesome sales on games I've been on the fence about, I've played games in genres that I normally wouldn't have given a thought, and loved.

Like Dangan Ronpa. I was curious about the series after doing some light research, but I didn't want to drop $40 on it. A PS+ sale it, and I got them for less than half of that, and loved them. Now I'm more interested in visual novels, a genre I wholly ignored my entire gaming life until now.

I grew up in a time where you really just had the front and back of the box to base purchases off of, so I'm used to just making up my own mind and getting the games that appeal to me. And I don't have a lot of disposable income, but I also don't have a problem with taking a risk on a game that I'm already intrigued by.

In the case of Bloodborne, I loved Demon's Souls and Dark Souls 1 (never played DS2, actually), so I'm very much looking forward to Bloodborne, and the bonus that it's set in a Victorian era style environment.

I think for the first time ever, I'm buying a video game solely off GAF hype. I think I've only seen one trailer for Bloodbourne, yet I'm intrigued enough to just say "Fuck it, Day 1!"

Anyone else do anything similar?

I've never watched a single trailer for any game ever, and would never. So yeah, I guess for every game. I always want it to be a surprise.

Not only that, but I bought the collectors edition of Bloodborne without watching any trailers or reading any articles and my only experience with the Souls series being 5 minutes of Demon Souls. The hype is unreal and I have a few friends really excited for this, so why not? Plus the setting is doing a lot more for for me than knights and dragons. On a business trip all week, hope to enjoy this when I return.

Not since like, Borderlands 1 back in 2009. Had barely heard of it until right before it came out, decided to buy it just on a whim. GREAT decision. Maybe there have been other relatively blind purchases but that one sticks out for me. Generally I do a lot of research on any game I'm interested in.
