I've bought a lot of games blind.
Sometimes I've been burned (Blood Omen 2, Tomb Raider: Angel of Darkness).
Sometimes I've been pleasantly surprised or blown away (Demon's Souls, Persona 4 Golden).
The unifying theme of all of the games I buy is that I buy games that interest. I'm not particularly susceptible to "GAF consensus" or any kind of consensus. I'll listen to suggestions from my friends, but if the game(s) aren't already in a genre that I personally find interesting, I often won't even take suggestions. Many of the times I've purchased games because of hype on NeoGAF, I've been burned and disappointed. Most of the time, actually. I've given in once or twice, and picked up a game based on GAF impressions that I've subsequently enjoyed, but it's also been titles that I was already into the genre/developer beforehand.
What's really helped me is PlayStation Plus, oddly enough. Because of all of the free games I get a month (PS3, PS4, and Vita owner), and some really awesome sales on games I've been on the fence about, I've played games in genres that I normally wouldn't have given a thought, and loved.
Like Dangan Ronpa. I was curious about the series after doing some light research, but I didn't want to drop $40 on it. A PS+ sale it, and I got them for less than half of that, and loved them. Now I'm more interested in visual novels, a genre I wholly ignored my entire gaming life until now.
I grew up in a time where you really just had the front and back of the box to base purchases off of, so I'm used to just making up my own mind and getting the games that appeal to me. And I don't have a lot of disposable income, but I also don't have a problem with taking a risk on a game that I'm already intrigued by.
In the case of Bloodborne, I loved Demon's Souls and Dark Souls 1 (never played DS2, actually), so I'm very much looking forward to Bloodborne, and the bonus that it's set in a Victorian era style environment.
