• Hey Guest. Check out your NeoGAF Wrapped 2025 results here!

I'm getting a Wii U today. Necessities?

You're going to get a lot of W101 answers. There's a free demo. Try before you buy.

Yeah you should do that. But remember that it's not a very good demo. It doesn't do a good job at explaining the mechanics at all. You'll most likely feel confused after playing it. I know I did and still liked the full game.

I'm loving my Wii U so far. Crazy thing is, I'm not even playing WWHD right now cause I'm playing through the Metroid Trilogy for the first time! Amazing games!

That said, pick up the Controller and Monster Hunter!

You're already getting 3 of the titles in my 10 must-have titles list. Here are the other 7:

Lego City Undercover
Batman Arkham City
Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate
Rayman Legends
Pikmin 3
The Wonderful 101
ZombiU

Definitely the right time to buy a Wii U.

Batman Arkham Origins is also a great deal being the best version (better lighting, better performance and less bugs. It lacks the multiplayer modes, but they're something really secondary in those games) and 10€ cheaper than the other versions of the game.

Arkham Origins only if you're not getting it on another console. That multiplayer mode, microtransactions aside, is something special and shouldn't be ignored.

Arkham City though, definitely, as long as you don't have a PC that can make that game sing.

I agree with this. Pikmin 3 is one of the best games I've played this year. I wasn't even a Pikmin fan when this year started.

Same. Though you could say I wanted to be a Pikmin fan but could never give my heart to Pikmin1/2. Pikmin3's three game types (Story, Mission, and Battle) is about as harmonious as you'll find in a game this year.

I'm going to pick up the M&L bundle as a gift to myself for surviving the last two months of a broken jaw, a broken wrist, and two surgeries. I know for a fact I'm picking WWHD up with it, but what else?

Also if anyone knows of any in-store US deals for the system or games right now, that'd be great.

I'm counting on you GAF. Help me get the best out of my Wii U to make up for two months of not being able to eat solid food.

Necessities: A Television with HDMI input, electricity.

Pikmin 3 - a must have

Nintendo Land - don't be afraid by its casual reputation, it's a very nice compilation of game, and it's by far the game that takes the best advantage of the Wii U concept, it's a blast in multiplayer

New Super Mario Bros U - it's more of the same, but it doesn't make it a bad game, it's actually an awesome game, the challenge mode is awesome. I can't believe I played this game for more than 50

Remember that the Wii U is backward compatible with Wii games, so you might check out some of the best Wii games if you missed them. Like Metroid Prime Trilogy, the two Mario Galaxy games, Zelda Skyward Sword, etc...

On the Virtual Console, I strongly suggest Earthbound.

I don't know why people are pushing the Pro Controller so strongly. I've played a ton of games without it, the Gamepad feels perfect on it's own. I could see why it might be better for something like Smash, but nothing I've played so far feels like it needs it, and in fact most of them largely benefit from the Gamepad screen.
Right, what DoubleTap said about battery life - 70+ hours on a charge versus about 3 with the Gamepad. Also, the weight and triggers feel better (especially for longer sessions) on the Pro. Quick Google says the Gamepad is 1.45 pounds; the Pro is 0.6 pounds - it feels way lighter to me. The flat triggers on the Gamepad hurt my index fingers if held down for a while (like on a racing game like Need for Speed); on the Pro the triggers are more square and don't leave indents if held for a while like the Gamepad's.

I do agree, some games are meant for the Gamepad and playing with the Pro you'd be missing out. But it depends on the game. There are several games where the Gamepad doesn't add anything (or there are no touchscreen features, like on 007 Legends online) and you might like the lighter, (to me) more comfortable Pro controller.

(Especially if you can find a white one for $25 in Best Buy's clearance section.)

Get ZombiU NOW! From the e-shop its only £11.99/ €14.99; ending soon. However I'm sure you can get good prices at retail. Its a game that is worth even the full price; if you like a true horror experience (unlike the Resident Evil Doritos and Mountain Dew love affair)

Lego City undercover is a good game but its hampered by loading time; if you do buy Lego City Undercover buy some coffee too.

Mario Bros Wii U; what can I say. Its an ok Mario game; if you played the past 2D installments you might be bored of it. Its a game that wasted soo much potential; this can be seen in the outdoor ghost levels. If every level was stylized on some painting/artist and including interesting new mechanics; then the game would had been the best 2D mario game ever; however it turned out "meh" and "more of the same".

Thats it from me; I also played some e-shop games and batman, but I'm not gonna write about them now however I might do in a future post.

Sounds like your budget is limited so you're smart to stick with one game till you get your fun out of it. Keep an eye out for sales coming up if you have some extra cash since between now and New Year's you may be able to pick up a few games for the cheapest you'll be able to find them for a while.

I know you're getting the game with your console, but seriously, don't overlook NSMBU. It's an amazing game.

Also, yeah, get a Pro Controller. The Gamepad isn't terrible, but the Pro Controller is a lot better.

Alright, just got back from the store. Picked up the bundle, Wind Waker HD, and one Pro Controller. I'm unbelievably excited. Feel free to add me, my Miiverse (?) name is NMFreed.

I'm hoping to get Pikmin 3, W101, Splinter Cell, and Sonic Racing by my next paycheck, as well as SM3DW.

The Wonderful 101 is truly amazing but definitely takes a bit a practice to get accustomed to.
Zombi U is worth it if you like survival horror. It can be a very tense experience though.
I feel like Most Wanted U isn't appreciated enough, it's such a good port, runs very well and looks beautiful. Consider if you haven't played it before.

Also consider:
Rayman Legends
Assassin's Creed IV
Monster Hunter Ultimate

I'm surprised (not really) no one has asked you what type of games you like.

Safe choices are Mario games of course but since you recently left such painful and immobilizing months games like Wii Sports Club and Wiifit U could be surprisingly enjoyable. edit: or maybe not depending what your doctor said about recovery :P

And a remote plus + nunchuck are indeed a necessity.

ZombiU - A MUST.
Monster Hunter 3 - If you're interesting in learning something new and have a lot of time.
Pikmin 3 - If you can find it for cheap. (It's fun, but it's too short and easy)

Wind Waker HD if you feel like it.

Stay away from Sonic LW if you gotta go fast...it's more of a traditional slower paced platformer.

IF you like COD...i suggest picking up the wiiU version and trying out the wiimote controls!
There are a lot of settings for it (dead zones, sensitivities)...so make sure to adjust!

Your day one list looks good with NSMBU and NSLU, as well as WWHD. I also recommend Pikmin 3, and especially Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate. Fantastic game. I tried the demo for Wonderful 101 and wasn't too impressed, but I seem to be in the minority on that game. :p Earthbound and Super Metroid are worth it on the Eshop too. :) And of course, Super Mario 3D World in a couple of weeks. :)

Thankfully I am free to do most things now. I've got 80% movement back in my wrist, and I'm back on solid food. So Fit U and Sports U will probably be in my future. Thanks!

Is the Wii U Pro Controller really that much better than the regular Wii Pro C?

Will the regular Wii Pro Controller work with every Wii U game?

Yup. W101 is so good.

Wonderful 101
Pikmin 3
Mighty Switch Force HD
Nano Assault Neo
Sonic Lost World (thats right)
Earthbound
Zelda Wind Waker HD

Preorder Mario 3D world.

I was thinking of picking up a Wii U and played some Wonderful 101 at the Nintendo World store for like 20 minutes.

I know it's popular on here so am I in the minority when I say: I couldn't tell what the heck was going on in the screen

We've all been there. It takes a while, but it clicks eventually. From then on it's orgasmic.

It's a game that takes some practice to play, I played it for three hours and already know how to play it. It's not that hard and damn it's rewarding, fun, and simply amazing.

It might not have any system sellers from a Sales Age standpoint, but the first year had some amazing games. Here are my gems in no particular order:

NintendoLand: The best minigame collection ever, and its not even close. More of an arcade collection. I was never a Wii Sports fan, and I absolutely LOVE this game.

NSMBU: Has some of the charm of the old mario 2d games (except the music), with the modern perks of the NSMB series. And get the Luigi DLC if you want an incredibly satisfying challenge.

Lego City Undercover: my favorite video game story of the year. Hilarious plot with great characters that do not take themselves too seriously. Incredible stuff. Its Lego GTA with platflorming elements.

Toki Tori 2+: One of the best indie games ever. Platform puzzler

Trine 2: I suggest this if you don't have it on other systems. Gorgeous game.

Pikmin 3: The best Pikmin yet. Perhaps Nintendo's secret greatest franchise. The mission modes are one of the best local co-op experiences I have ever had.

WWHD: I was burnt out on Zelda, but the added functionality and 1080p graphics made this one of my most enjoyable experiences of the year

W101: I truly believe this is Kamiya's masterpiece

Earthbound: I never played it before. I liked it, but I don't think its as great as other people say. But the music is spectacular.

ZombiU: The scariest game I have ever played. I was honestly scared, and that does not happen to me often.

Rayman Legends: The main game is not as good as Rayman Origins imo. But its still great. And the challenges app was a daily addiction around my house for months.

Okay guys I think I went insane but I cancelled my xbox 1 preorder and preordered the wii u special edition with Zelda.. And this is coming from a huge xbox fan.. It just seems better to wait a year and wait till the games come to get it and the Wii u looks soo good atm.. Btw the ww hd special edition is just a code right? I'm getting it from amazon france but I'll be able to get it from my e-shop at belgium right?

As someone that went throught the post-launch blues with the Wii U (and the PS3), you probably made the right choice.

I got this feeling that a wait and see approach might be better with both the ps4 and the xbox 1. And for wind waker alone the wii u looks so good and mario 3d world.. It just seems better now.

If you have friends to play with Nintendo land is a NECESSITY as well as four Wii remotes.

My friends don't even like Nintendo stuff, but whenever they come over they still request that we play Mario Chase. It is easily one of my most played games of last year.

You've made a smart choice.

Give a chance for PS4/X1 to mature a bit, iron out any wrinkles. I plan on getting both but not until Spring.
