this is all crazy talk up in here... i most definitely put on sunscreen when i'm planning to be in the sun for a while, and i'm black! i guess some peeps are on some get a tan yo #YOLO ish

Yeah, just the whole question of little testing and research done around it. The initial consensus in public is relatively positive though, but you may always want to take your time with these newly-made medicine, as precise long-term effects are unknown. Can be just like cannabis with all it's naysayers, yet research has proved it safe after time - Or it could end up as something severe with distant long-term side-effects

note: I'm not sure if I should've even brought it up and I don't encourage using it, medicine in general is something you should be very wary of and you should NEVER buy it from a questionable place, medicine belongs to apothecaries in most cases is what I think - research stuff like this

I'm pale. You are coming off as extremely insulting. Glad popular opinion has caused you to think all pale people are ugly. And just because you got teased doesn't give you the right to do it to me.

I grew up on the beach and am incapable of tanning. Fortunately, that has caused me to take care of my skin all my life, using sunblock, avoiding the midday sun.

Skin cancer is predicted to be on the rise because of people like you who think tanning is healthy no matter what. You are just plain wrong, man. Enjoy your cancer.

Op, just use common sense with sunblock and AVOID TANNING BEDS. If you can't tan, you can't tan.

What? I really can't either for the most part. I'm not making fun of anyone, as I am one of those people. I'm just not blind to the fact that being tan is considered a lot more attractive than being pale. It's just a better, healthier look. Deal with it. I have.

what? yeah the sun does affect our skin

Don't tell the author of "Save the Pearls". Being black is apparently a super power and makes you resistant to solar radiation.

I agree that society tends to consider tans "healthy", which is terrible misinformation.

In your opinion -- I prefer pale women, for example. I don't think you're looking at this objectively.

I have pale skin and I do not burn very easily. I don't bother putting sunscreen on. It takes a full day in the sun without sunscreen to get a little burnt, and that goes away very fast. I have built up a decent base by sitting in the sun occasionally for maybe 30 minutes. I haven't gotten a bad sunscreen since I was a kid.

Am I still damaging my skin when I don't get burnt?

Wish I could tan. Red hair and pale skin though, I can get burned just sitting outside at a restaurant. I've heard red haired people don't look very natural with darker skin though so maybe it's for the best.

Can you point me to those posts? I'm missing them.

I see people saying that tanning is objectively bad for you, which is true (and you're right, some methods of tanning are much worse than others), but that's different than saying darker/tanner skin is worse than paler/whiter skin. Are there other posts beyond those?

There were a couple of flippant drive-by posts, and I misread 2. Sorry for the false alarm.

Not at all times (as in, just a few decades ago this wasn't true), and not amongst all people, and as you said, not necessarily in all cultures.

You personally prefer tan skin apparently. That's fine. In contrast to your suggestion, I don't think you're looking at this rationally.

Me? I personally don't care all that much. I find someone who is of a normal tan to be more attractive, then again, I like more than just white women, so at some point it doesn't really matter. If a girl is cute, then she's going to pull almost anything off anyway.

I'm just "depressingly realistic," for lack of a better phrase. I'm not tan at all; I burn, I've tried to get tan through normal means, and while I was never "made fun" of it that much, I've had a few jokes thrown my way about it. I know that it's generally considered unattractive. I'm realistic about it, and I know that it just is how it is, OR maybe I could try some other means like a tanning bed, and then if I'm still pale, then I can give up.

Yes, you absolutely are. In aggregate this will reduce collagen in your face and increase the likelihood of skin cancers (note: this does not mean you are destined to get skin cancer, just that the chance of carcenoma incidence increases with sun exposure).

Technically, yes, but it's nothing to get worked up over. Humans were meant to be in the sun. We just weren't meant to bombard ourselves with it on a daily basis.

Jokes are harmless, I joke about my girl being pale but i like the tone on her, I don't think someone mentioning you're pale = JESUS CHRIST BURN IT, but many (myself included) do think tan usually looks better.

Misinformation? It's not misinformation, it's what looks more natural to the eye. It's a part of society, because most people feel that way. Why do you think people lay out on the beach? Why do you think that tanning places are so popular

Yes, they were harmless jokes, and I wasn't offended, but there's truth to them.

Technically, yes, but it's nothing to get worked up over. Humans were meant to be in the sun. We just weren't meant to bombard ourselves with it on a daily basis.

This is the naturalist fallacy; we were "meant" to do lots of things which are objectively bad for us. We were "meant" to have average, natural lifespans of about 40 years, for example.

i'm white as paper and i don't look "unhealthy" whatever the hell you mean by that. if you take care of yourself, get enough sleep, exercise a bit etc. you will exude healthiness regardless of your skin colour.

Stand up bed bro. Also, talking about this makes you look like a pansy so from here on out just tell ppl you were born that way, mmkay?

I disagree. I don't know if I'd be considered unhealthy looking, but I do all those things, and I know I'd look better/healthier/more fit if I were tan.

Okay, so this is true for you. It may not be true for all people, or at all times, or in all cultures. Other people may be pale and look very attractive that way.

Let's just agree that doing activities outside in the sun presents a negligible chance of overall harm so long as precautions are taken.

There's nothing "natural" about it - it's just a changing standard of beauty. Society fools itself into believing certain traits are more attractive and/or healthy. 100 years ago, fairness and a curvy figure were a sign of good health. Our current standards will change again - to what, I don't know. Just keep in mind that society's obsession with being tan is fleeting.

If I remember you correctly from the Dating-Age thread, your main problem is insecurity.

Maybe you should care less what other people think of you. Just sound advice.

You are not in need of a tan. You are white. Embrace it. Deliberate, habitual tanning will only increase your chances of skin cancer and/or premature aging.

It's not worth it.
Yep. I don't get it. I guess living in Florida I see the direct effects of tanning. So many of the women here my age (30) look close to 40.

Let's just agree that doing activities outside in the sun presents a negligible chance of overall harm so long as precautions are taken.

Absolutely, this is certainly true. I wasn't saying your conclusion was necessarily wrong; just that your reasons for reaching that conclusion were suspect. "Right for the wrong reasons," if you will.

It's fine not because humans were "meant to be in the sun," but because moderate sun exposure with modern sun damage prevention techniques produces very small increases in carcenoma incidence over time. It still isn't a good thing, it's just not one of the more serious risks to our health and we'd do nothing but cower in fear under the covers if we avoided every real but negligible risk to our health.

I disagree. I don't know if I'd be considered unhealthy looking, but I do all those things, and I know I'd look better/healthier/more fit if I were tan.

Bitch, I look like royalty. All you brown skinned peasants can keep working the fields.

Why do millions of people lay out on beaches every day?

i will say this- there was this really hot chick at a bar I used to frequent who became mysteriously attached to me for a while (she'd just gotten married), and one time she said she thought I was hot because I reminded her of Edward (yes that one) because I'm so pale.

So, you ghostly freaks, you have Twilight to thank for something.

Why do millions of people lay out on beaches every day?

Why do so many Japanese people use parasols when it isn't raining? Why did Michael Jackson gradually lighten his skin color? Why did Sammy Sosa do the same? Why do I personally prefer pale women?

The logical conclusion is that some people like more tanned skin, and some people like lighter skin. There is no "correct" answer here, only subjective preferences, and you apparently prefer more tan skin. Suggesting that tan skin is the "correct" or "objective" preference is neither realistic nor soundly reasoned.

Sounds like Exudos has a few other self image issues at work here as well.

I'm missing something - what issues do you think Exudos has? Comparing playing a round of golf IRL versus staying indoors and playing the top golf game franchise seem a fairly valid comparison.

Im not going to argue with the healthfactor being at play.

But lets be honest, everybody looks better with a tan.

When im going to the beach all day i'll wear sunscreen, but even with sunscreen on you still get a tan, unless you go factor 50 or whatever.

Why do millions of people lay out on beaches every day?

i like lazing around on the beach, but i don't do it to get a tan, i do it to relax and go swimming. don't assume everyone at the beach is looking to get a tan.

as much as i loathe twilight, this is true. it has made paleness somewhat "cool" again so i can't hate on it too much!

Tanning is you saying you have time/money to waste doing nothing.
Previously, being pale meant you didn't have to work manual labor out in the fields so being pale was preferable.

I'm not saying that it is "correct," I'm just saying that it is usually preferred in American culture, or many other cultures.

The Japanese use parasols as a fashion statement, and the others are all personal views of one person. Like I said, there's no right choice technically, but in American society, tan is viewed as healthy, athletic, active, fit, etc. It's just the way it is.

EDIT: Also, I forgot if you want to look good, you must be "insecure." That's such bullshit. Some people know they look like shit, and either accept it, or try to change it. Why can't more people just be realistic about their looks?

Because millions of people strive to look like bacon (and are insecure)

Just because they think they look better with tan skin, and or like to attract people who like tan skin doesn't mean they are insecure. At least, no more than someone who thinks they look better with short hair is insecure. We do all sorts of maintenance on our bodies, dangerous or not.

Aren't there also beneficial effects from being in the sun?

If I recall correctly, you produce more Vitamin D... which helps sex drive among other things

Vitamin D is produced by ultraviolet rays hitting the skin, which prevents your bones from becoming brittle & shattering. You can also get vitamin D by eating some things, like fish, but you'd have to eat a lot.

I think at the point at which you've tanned your skin, you've gotten much more sunlight exposure than is needed for Vit D production.

I am obviously better off than most people since I don't sit in the sun for hours for the sake of tanning, I don't burn, I live in a very temperate zone with long winters, and I don't see the sun everyday. I am not too concerned, but I guess putting on sunscreen will only help.

I get more than enough Vitamin D from the whole milk I drink. The only benefits I get from the sun is it helps my acne a little and obviously tanner skin.

You do realize there's a slight space between tanning yourself leather and not going outside, right gaf?

And people enjoy the beach to enjoy the beach which typically happens to be next to an ocean. It's not for me, but my god gaf.

Yeah tanning + ocean water does wonders to clear your skin from acne. But unless you live in extremely sunny places like Texas or Arizona you don't really need to put sun screen every time you go out outside unless you're an albino.

I may be mistaken, but I believe the vitamin D added to milk gets mostly used by the absorption of the calcium in milk.

IceCold: Yeah, if I don't expose my back to the sun every once and a while I get terrible acne there, yuck.

There are two types of Vitamin D, one of which is obtained from sun exposure and the other from dietary sources like milk. You will get plenty of Vitamin D by being in the sun a moderate amount. At any rate it's definitely not a real justification for tanning.
