I'm in desperate need of a tan

Orange looks good on nobody, and pale doesn't look good. At least neither of those look better than just having a good medium in between.

Also, maybe some people want whiter teeth, or no body hair, or maybe they look too pale. Why does that make people have less self-esteem? Because those options are out there?

Pale chicks are hot, bro.

Nah, Opiate is right. It is absolutely personal preference.

Personally, I think it highly depends on the person and the quality of their skin. Like I said, my skin looks dreadful without a tan. Birth marks are more evident, acne is visible, lips look really red, dark circles under my eyes make me look tired as hell. With a very moderate tan, I look a lot healthier, overall.

Nah, just saying it's hard to say from a heavily photoshopped picture. But, having looked up some of her makeup-less photos, she seems to have very good skin (no splotches, visible birth marks, etc.) so she does look good pale.

This is a fair assessment really, tan skin can hide imperfections, but really clear pale skin that looks full can look very nice as well. Sadly I am neither, heh.

I'd just wait for the summer, natural tans are the best anyways.

Lotion makes you look like a carrot and tanning beds will kill you.

Emma Stone looks good either way!

There's no real difference in between the sun and tanning beds, AFAIK.

By the way, fuck sunburn. Holy shit I just took off my shirt and fuck does that shit sting. Hopefully it'll be worth it though.

Now THAT's really bad for you. And it won't be worth it...because your skin is still going to be pale after your skin peels.

I've never heard a person say "Oh, I look so pale!" in a positive way before. Never, ever, not once. I've heard it said in a negative way several times though.

Have you ever heard someone say that in a positive way?

I rode my bike yesterday for a good 8 hours straight. My forehead and forearms are almost orange, the rest of my exposed skin is regular tan(I'm dominican), but under my shirt and pants line it's way lighter. I would rather have pale even skin then three distinct shades.

That's because society in general is more accepting of people with orange fake tans than people who are naturally pale. However, I don't find paleness to be unattractive, whilst I do think fake tans are.

Yes, I have.

So if I get some sunburn occasion? But mainly stay in indoors? I'm not going end up like a prune right? Like when I ride my bike, or something.

The stress of worrying about it is probably more harmful to the aging process than a little sun damage here and there, the people who look like leather are people who use sun beds or lay out in the sun ritually, not just casual routine time outside (unless everything you do is in direct sunlight)

I hope to hear it said in a positive way, since my preference is pale skin.

Though in the end, I don't see the big deal about skin colour. The fact that skin colour makes people insecure/secure just tells me society is messed up.

Put tons of aloe vera gel on it and hope for the best. There's a chance that just the outer layer of skin will peel, leaving a nice tan beneath it.

This happened to me on my back this summer when I accidentally fell asleep outside. Now my back is more tan than my front which I had been gradually building up.

Though in the end, I don't see the big deal about hair styles. The fact that haircuts make people insecure/secure just tells me society is messed up.

We can do this with all sorts of things people do, but it doesn't mean society is messed up. You can't honestly tell me you've never maintained your own appearance, nor that you care not about the appearance of a potential mate, can you?

There are many better places to look if you want to determine if society is messed up.

I never understood the white obsession with tanning. I was born with brown skin and...it ain't all that, guys.

The pic on the right clearly looks better...

If anybody seriously thinks he looks better pale, come on now.

What?! He looks like a tomato.

I said fuck it yesterday, and went to work without sunscreen on. My arms are red as fuck, and my face to a lesser degree. If this doesn't brown up, then I'm going to a tanning bed, and I don't care who fucking calls me a bitch or whatever.

Yeah, but people look like shit usually when they're ghostly pale. Trust me, I'm one of them.

Currently ghostly pale right now, it goes well with my bangs.

If I'm going to tan in a bed, how much time should sessions last? Should I go every day or every other day? Any tips from people that have experience on this?

I hate to be the voice of common sense around here, but Melanie got melanoma from tanning in the sun, and tanning salons.

I probably won't be able to change your mind, but I strongly recommend you avoid using a tanning bed, especially so often. I know it isn't always considered attractive to be pale, but neither is prematurely aged and wrinkled skin. The evidence for the dangers of indoor tanning goes beyond anecdotal, and it's not a case of fear-mongering when dermatologists, the FDA, The Skin Cancer Foundation, and the World Health Organization say it poses a genuine long term health risk.

The IARC report cited research showing that tanning is especially hazardous to young people; those who use sunbeds before age 30 increase their lifetime risk of melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, by 75 percent.

A lotion or spray tan may be more of a hassle, but they are definitely the safer alternatives when used correctly. I suggest checking out some of the self tanner lotions like this one at Sephora.

i dont find tans attractive. If a white girl has a tan, i think she is a try-hard kinda like wearing lots of make-up that doesnt improve their 1-10 hotness ratio at all. They look orange unlike a naturally born skin color. BTW , I am a latino but light skinned. Ive had people ask what I was.

I usually kickstart my 'tanned look' one week before summer/beach time by visiting a tanning bed thrice over a week. It is then maintained by summer activities outdoors. In winter I return to pale.
Sometimes if I'm going on vacation for a couple of weeks to an exotic/sunny location I usually visit a tanning bed before leaving. Less likely to sunburn with the skin acclimatised.

oh sorry i forgot, because tan automatically = sporty, athletic, health-conscious individual with looooooads of vitamin D. according to a shit ton of people in this thread.

Because millions of people strive to look like bacon (and are insecure)

My god does GAF get all elitist and defensive over anything!

I can only speak for the US, but having a little color is generally preferred just like being fit and not over weight. Sure there's some that prefer the opposite and if you're happy with it more power to you. But you can't just shut out the facts that, for the most part, the majority of people like some color. And if someone wants some it's not because "they're just following the crowd man, fucking insecure sheep!"

A history of sunburns. Having had one or more blistering sunburns as a child or teenager increases your risk of developing skin cancer as an adult. Sunburns in adulthood also are a risk factor.

Excessive sun exposure. Anyone who spends considerable time in the sun may develop skin cancer, especially if the skin isn't protected by sunscreen or clothing. Tanning, including exposure to tanning lamps and beds, also puts you at risk. A tan is your skin's injury response to excessive UV radiation.

Congratulations. Between your tanning addiction and absolute insistence that tan people are objectively better looking than people with pale skin, you sound like an idiot.

Put some aloe Vera on that shit, at least you'll feel better.

I prefer being pale. I hate when some people give you shit for it. Like, piss off. I'm not sick. This is just how I normally look and I am fine with it. I don't go and tell people they look too dark and should stop tanning (unless I know them well and they're looking dangerously orange).

A clear and even skintone is preferrable imo.

I just have one thing to say, thank god for Twilight. If there is one thing that shit franchise did right, it was making pale men look good to women in general.

I have to put up with comments of how I look like Edward (I dont) or a vampire or whatever, but I know these are compliments for the most part. Beats the "get a tan" ones I usually got 3 or 4 years ago.

I love me a girl with milky white skin mmm, especially if she has big veiny boobs mmmm

"Milky white skin" can look sexy as hell in a woman.

Yes you will shrivel up exactly like a prune (same size and everything), and definitely don't drink any more than 1 can of soda per year or you might as well be drinking nuclear waste.

I'm ginger and pretty pale, and I do admit I look better with a tan, I look more healthy. But I also don't want to get skin cancer so I always wear sunscreen when out in the sun, never done a sun bed or anything. I have started to try fake tan, and it can look very natural and nice if done properly with the right shade. It's much better to get it done by a professional, but home tanning isn't too bad.

Honestly I would prefer to be pale like the rest of my body that isn't exposed to the sun, it's such a nice palish olive (half and half Vietnamese and Chinese)
