I'm looking for Japanese only PS1 games...

DoDonPachi (better on Saturn though)
Sokyugurentai (better on Saturn though)
Vib Ribbon
Tobal 2
Dance Dance Revolution 4th
Final Fantasy VII International (if you are interested in that extra disc)

I noticed that there are some Japanese psone games on psn has anyone played any?

I have quite a few...

Gunners Heaven (mediocre run & gun)
Zanac X Zanac (great shooter collection and rather unique)
Dezeamon Kids (Build-your-own-shooter but I bought it for the 100+ games included)
Adventures of Little Ralph (Very class old-school action platformer)
Gaia Seed (Not a very good shooter, picked it up due to curiosity as it was an extremely rare game)
Panzer Bandit (Probably the best Playstation-only beatemup out there)
Rapid Angel(Decent low-budget action-platformer)
Rakugaki Showtime (Sort of an odd predate to Powerstone. Arena-brawler by Treasure, not sure what I think of it)

Probably some others I'm forgetting about.

I decided to look some of these up and I have to say, Rapid Angel looks like utter shit.

Yeah low-budget is a bit of an understatement. It is decent though.

You could reaaaallly dig yourself into a hole here OP; the PSone's Japan library is insane. Below are a random 3 which I personally missed out on initially:

Asuka 120%

Samurai Deeper Kyo

Finger Flashing (kind of like the most graphicly pleasing game of rock-paper-scissors)

And there's already been some sweet stuff posted.

Wish I had seen this thread before going to Book Off yesterday, I was only looking for Eretzvaju and Umihara Kawase (couldn't find either, but I got Tobal 2 for 105 yen last time) and I couldn't think of any other PSX games to look for. I still combed through about half of their games, but there were too many PSX games to check each one. I'm in rural Japan, so the selection is not always good, but some gems turn up from time to time. I really need to get to a big city again soon, though.

No one mentioned Internal Section?

INTERNAL SECTION

Stage 3 music :rock

Really great game, not too expensive either (but may be a bit tough to track down) - it's like somewhere between Tempest and Rez, a very abstract tube shooter with great music and kaleidoscopic graphics. Looks mighty impressive for a PS1 game, as well.

Also, I would give a shout out to NOTAM of Wind - the world's first (and only, to my knowledge) hot-air balloon sim. Game made by Artdink, who made some really creative and detailed simulation games for the PS1 era (are they still even around?). Graphics aren't very great, but the game was from 1997 so that's to be expected.

For other JP-only games, Linda^3, Moon RPG Remix Adventure (big up GhaleonQ), Tales of Phantasia PS1, and plenty of obscure RPGs.

1. Does anyone know anything about Internal Section's developer, Positron? GameFAQs said that they made 1 game.

2. I love that you suggested Artdink's balloon game. (You're 1 of my favorite posters, seriously.) I'm not incredibly well-versed in Artdink's history, so someone should correct this if I'm wrong. http://www.gamefaqs.com/features/company/10637.html Artdink made its name on train simulators. They had 1 team devoted to that (and maybe the Aquanaut's Holiday and Notam Of Wind games) and 1 team devoted to weird stuff like Kowloon's Gate, Tail Of The Sun, No One Can Stop Mister Domino, and the rest. Their titles suggest that the crazy people left last generation. Someone should make a topic, though.

Another great fighter. Cel-shaded style.

Glad this got mentioned!
Wanted to post it in the old games that still look great thread but couldnt remember the delightfully crazy name for the life of me

Thanks for the suggestions.

Any tactical rpgs? I see King's Field listed, I assume that's one.
King's Field is actually a real time first person RPG. It's kind of a Japanese counterpart to Ultima Underworld and The Elder Scrolls, and the ancestor of Demon's Souls and Dark Souls.

Found some tactical games for a very cheap price, ほうしねんぎ (Houshinengi)
and Rebus (レブス)。

Are there any good Japanese tactical games I should look for specifically?

Rebus was localized under the name Kartia.

I guess there's the Summon Night games - they're like Tactics Ogre lite. Front Mission 2 would be sort of OK if it weren't for the god forsaken load times and unskippable fight scenes, though a later print apparently fixed those. Tearring Saga is a huge Fire Emblem ripoff but not really bad. Check up anything else by Flight Plan - I think there's a Black Matrix game by them too. None of these are super fantastic but if you're looking for something else beyond FF Tactics/Tactics Ogre, these are alright.

Panzer Bandit (Probably the best Playstation-only beatemup out there)

Hmm, might have to give the nod to Captain Commando as the best beat 'em up on the PSX, but since it's a port (and an excellent port), Panzer Bandit is good. It's just nowhere near as great as Guardian Heroes.

Plenty great one's mentioned here, some other good one's:
Senkyu (aka Battle Balls) - Very fun gravity style Puzzle Bobble game. Match four or more of the same color balls in a row and everything comes tumbling down, hopefully into some combos.
Korokoro Post Nin - Very reminiscent of the Sonic 1 bonus stage. It's a game where you tilt the entire playfield around you to get the girl to deliver a paper into all the mailboxes on the stage, then make a run for the exit.
Raiden DX - Awesome port of an awesome shooter.
Rakugaki Showtime - It was mentioned earlier, but I gotta second this one. If you take the time to learn it, it has some amazing depth once you get past the off the wall visuals. One of my faves.

Came in here to post Suzuki Bakuhatsu, but there it was in the very first post. The other games I was thinking of (Slap Happy Rhythm Busters, Tobal 2, internal Section) are covered off already too.

Nice work gaf.

I just remembered a stadegy game I love that's available on the Japanese PS1 I didn't mention before, and also available for many other systems. Mobile Suit Gundam: ghiren's greed, blood of zeon. The gundam name might turn people off, but if you take a chance at it, you will find one of the most fun, enjoyable, and great strategy games you can buy. Great series, also worth picking up on the psp. It's by far one of the best games not released outside Japan in my humble opinion.

Is Incredible Crisis Japan-only? Because Incredible Crisis.

It's like Warioware, except with minigames instead of microgames, and there's an overarching storyline of sorts. It's still pretty bizarre and I think there's an English option.
