I'm not committing to a console before going hands-on with the controllers

Many people have already made their choice for a variety of reasons, but I'm still sitting on the fence until some demo stations show up locally so I can try these new controllers out.

As important as exclusive games are, most of my favorites in recent years have been multiplatform, so I'm much more concerned about which system is going to feel the best when I'm playing games from Bungie, Rocksteady, Rockstar San Diego, etc. That's my personal #1 priority.

Not really. I've never had a problem with controllers in the past.

Neither did I. There are some that I like better than others, but no controller ever went in the way of my enjoyment of a game (except when I was a kid and the controller was "cheating" to make me lose ;) )

Sony should have had DS4's out six months ago and working with PS3. So many people are concerned about the PS4 controller, if they were widely available, this wouldn't be an issue, and the DS3 is still bad, PS3 owners should be able to get a DS4 anyway.

Nah. Neither of them can be any worse than the DS3, and I could make do with that piece of crap when there was an exclusive I wanted to play.

A ton of money is spent by any of these companies to develop their controllers. I have zero concern of first party controllers. I even quite like the Wii U GamePad.

I can't remember the last time I held a controller I couldn't get used to. This has been the process with all controllers. I've never held a controller and thought: "This is it!", it always is: "I guess I can get used to this."

The only controller I feel that could really be an issue is the Steam one, but it's not like I'd be getting the steamed ham anyway.

I went hands on with both controllers not too long ago. DS4 is instant awesomeness for me. I just never posted impressions because everything has already been said.

Yep, one of my main concerns going forward into next gen.

I'm hoping the DS4 improves on everything that bothered me with the DS3 (so far so good from the impressions I've read) and PSN has to at least be as good as Live was this gen. Anything less and I'll be disappointed.

You'd be willing pay $100 dollars more just for a slightly better controller? That's very strange to me.

Why not, the controller will be what you spend the most time with, makes a huge difference.

Though as it was mentioned, anything can be better than the POS DS3.

Haven't heard a single bad thing about either controller.
I haven't either, but I don't really trust most people writing about games, and I don't think a lot of my opinions on the current controllers are all that common either.

For example, I think everyone agrees that the PS3 has a better d-pad than the 360, and I agree with that too, but I also think both of them are bad, and that's not an opinion I see a lot.

The biggest issue I've had with a controller is the 360's dpad. That was manageable, but not preferable. Controller preference would never sway me to buy one console over the other.

That's my big thing for next gen. PSN has to be a lot more quick and stable. Also updates to the store should be consistent. (talking about america psn. from what i hear other regions are good with updates) I don't have a problem with any of the controllers.

You must not have seen or read a whole bunch of impressions then. I don't know if it's just the general negativity seeping into personal preferences but, I keep hearing little intricacies about the XB1 controller people don't like. Rough outside edge of analog sticks, flush shoulder buttons, it's smaller. Stuff that's really really subjective, but it's usually consistent. On the PS4 side, I struggle to come up with something besides the absurd "analog stick placement" thing that's the go to complaint for some reason.

Fortunately, demo booths should be hitting soon. Get hands-on then and then literally nothing anyone says will matter.

I don't understand at all how a controller could decide which console you get unless you're new to gaming. I have never had an issue with any controller... go where the games you like are.

You're going to have to hold onto the controller for the next five years. It better feel good.

I would not have bought an Xbox if it weren't for the Controller S. Once that hit, bam, it was great.

I'm on the games > controller train.

I hate the Wii Remote. But without it I couldn't have played Super Mario Galaxy. The control scheme has never turned me off from a console. What did you guys do with the NES and SNES controllers? Imagine the complains if there were large internet forums like this in the 80s and 90s.

I've always hated the DualShock for anything other than D-Pad heavy games (platformers, fighting). But having got hands-on with both DS4 and XB1 controllers at the EG Expo, I can safely say you'll be happy with either of them. Both fitted neatly in to my hands and both were a joy to game with. It's just the shitty games on show that let it all down.

I think the OP has a good approach. Don't buy a system on blind faith, try it out and make sure it's worth your money first.

I approve.

Do you play stick? I can't work a 360 dpad to save my life. I know a scv player who only uses the 360 dpad and dudes pretty good, I guess its just my problem haha.

It's certainly one of my biggest concerns and the positive feedback so far regarding the DS 4 is one of the main reasons I'm strongly leaning Sony next gen and feel comfortable holding off on an X1

I feel you OP and I agree but I think for me, the PS4 has so much more going for it. On top of multiple reports which are pretty unanimous in that the PS4 controller is greatly improved and fixes all of the issues I had with the previous ones.

And if it turns out to be a dud, I have a PC and plan on getting an XB1 sometime in the future. It's going to be a cosole exclusives box anyway.

I'm not committing to a console until it actually gets at least a year's worth of games on it's library.

And also I'm not sure I'm committing to any damn system at all, if they put out some good games they'll have my attention but if they lose their way I'm turning my back on them and never turning back.

I could see doing this at one time, too. Too many exclusives prevent that from being the deciding factor, though. I put up with the Dual Shit 3 (thankfully, there are Real Triggers to fix the crap L2/R2) just to play Sony exclusives, but given all of the impressions from those that have gone hands-on, I'd say it will be safe to go with either this gen.

The controller is important to me but after having to downgrade from the 360 pad to the DS3, I think both will be a great step up.

The X1 controller seems pretty much the same but with nice improvements.

The DS4 seems to have rectified the DS3 problems.

So which controller is the best will just be personal preference, but I dont think it will be like this gen when the 360 pad >>>>>>>>>>> DS3.

  • I'am more fussed about 3rd party game performance
  • online performance
  • exclusive games (and being committed in the long term to AAA core games)

Nothing wrong with wanting to try something out personally before spending $400. Bravo for striving to be an educated consumer.

I've never ever had trouble with either the 360 controller or the PS3 controller. Both feel great to me and I like using both. Just seems a bit strange to me, to base a purchase around that.
