I'm performing for Video Games Live!

Okay! So I'm back after a really long day.

Awesome experience. I'll have pictures soon, but for now I'll just give a general feeling of the night.

My choir, Schola Cantorum on the Hudson, did a very admirable job, especially considering how little time we had to learn it as well as only having one shot with the orchestra. Speaking of which, the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra is pretty damn good. But from my vantage point, I could only really hear the percussion and horns.

Jack Wall, the conductor for the show (he also wrote the music for Splinter Cell, Jade Empire and Mass Effect as well as many more) was really nice to us. The only real complaint he had was that we should sing with more confidence and louder. I also got to him after the second show and thanked him for Mass Effect, he said we'll play it next year, and I asked if Bioware was working on Mass Effect 2. He said "I can tell you they're working on it, I can't tell you what I'm doing." Damn, I'm pissed that I didn't get GAF the inside scoop!!

Tommy Tallarico was fun on-stage. I didn't really get a chance to meet him, but I did see him backstage at one point and he said something to the effect of "That was fun. You think you can do it again?", to which I respond "Yeah, I'll make sure that I'm free." I wanted to tell him how Earthworm Jim and Cool Spot made me wonder how the hell the Genesis could make those sounds, but I didn't get the chance to run into him again. Maybe next time!

I got some pics and a really grainy video that is probably not worth posting, and will be getting more pics from other members of the choir. So I'll have to post what I have soon. But for tonight I'm gonna relax, eat and get some rest. Got church in the morning, so long as I have a voice then.

Oh and BTW, If you guys want I'll post those emails I sent to the choir, to help them understand the games more. You all will understand it clearly, and could've given more info as well.

Here was the set list:
Classic Arcade
Metal Gear Solid
God of War
Space Invaders Interactive (they had someone play it onstage for prizes)
Harry Potter OOTP
Civilization IV (perhaps the most fun to sing)
Final Fantasy Solo Piano w/Martin Leung (the blindfolded Video Game Pianist from Youtube)
Metroid
Zelda

Intermission

Kingdom Hearts
Sonic the Hedgehog
World of Warcraft
Starcraft II (Yes, we played music to a game that isn't released yet)
Mario
Mario Piano solo & extra bonus Tetris Solo
Guitar Hero 3 - Aerosmith's Sweet Emotion Interactive (same as Space Invaders)
Halo Suite & Halo 3 Suite
End of concert

Two encores:
One Winged Angel
Castlevania Rock

Anyway, ask questions and I'll see if I can accommodate.

:D

I was front row, dead center mate, for the 2:00 show. Awesome show, fantastic experience. Congrats, must have been killer being on that side of things. Too bad you didn't get to see and experience it from the audiance though.

That venue is gorgeous too, my first time there.
btw, where the setlists the same for the 2 and 8?

Yes. Set lists were the same.

Anyway, here's a few pictures that I took with my camera phone. I'm gonna ask around to the other members of the choir for more pics.

Here's a pic between sets of the theater.

And here's a picture during the end of the show, when Tommy Tallarico asks the audience to take out their cell phones (like how at rock concerts people take out their lighters).

I'll come back with more info after dinner.

Jack once autographed my program on the Myst page and wrote "more myst coming in 2007!". Well I'm still waiting!

Awesome! Video Games Live is simply AMAZING. I've seen it twice and it's great. I'm actually doing a live interview with Tommy Tallarico for WiiNintendo on Tuesday night, so I'm really excited for that. It was so awesome seeing the show. The second one I went to actually ended up being the 100th show (that was in April this year), which was sweet. I even recorded the whole show (audio only) and have some pretty good quality recordings, aside from the audience in the background of course (and yes, you are allowed to record).

No way, I play French horn too :D It would be cool if I could perform with VGL someday.
Woah, I didn't even notice that he played French Horn. I played that in high school! Good times. Yea, playing with VGL would be so freaking amazing. Hearing the music live is amazing, so playing it just has to be one of the greatest things ever.

Nice. How do you get that gig? Were there auditions held somewhere, or was it more open?
Now every horn player after me will just ask what hell "neo gaf" means and why someone wrote it in the part. :)
:lol hopefully it doesn't have some italian alternate meaning, like "intentionally adjust your valves out of tune."

Wow! How the hell did I miss this thread being resurrected back in October?

That's awesome that someone else on GAF got to perform in this great concert. Hope you had fun, weedlewalker!

Yeah, actually my choir director tried to contact the VGL people about performing again for that very NYC show. But I assume they already have a choir ready to go in that area. They will be back in Newark, NJ sometime next year, though. So hear's hoping they call us again!

I went in San Diego this year, Got pretty much every one I could to sign my program. The Warcraft music guy and the guy who sings the vocals for Civ 4's opening song on there :-p And some loli dressed as link that plays the flute :-p

I wasn't sure if I should revive this thread, since I started it two years ago, which was the last New Jersey VGL show that I was in. But since it has the title that I would use anyway, I decided to just revive it.

Just got back from the first of two shows at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center. Great show.

The composer was Afrika composer Wataru Hokoyama (he also did some compositions for Res Evil 5). He was a great conductor and very friendly. He really seemed to appreciate the choir and loved how we sounded. He wished that he put vocal parts in his song so that he could work with us, he said after our dress rehearsal.

The songs were:

Classic Arcade Medley
Mega Man
Assassins Creed 2
Shadow of the Colossus
Frogger (Interactive song.) Two audience members competed for a prize, while the orchestra played the music in accordance to whether the person died or beat the level.
Afrika
Tron
Halo Trilogy

Flute Link
Warcraft
Diablo 3
BrentalFloss
Guitar Hero: Van Halen (Jump) Interactive song. Audience member played it on stage with orchestra and choir backing up the real track.
Street Fighter 2
FF VII - One-Winged Angel
Castlevania Rock (with special guest on the organ, Original Castlevania composer Kinuyo Yamashita!!)
Chrono Trigger/Chrono Cross
And an acoustic version of Still Alive from Portal.

If anyone is in the NY-NJ area and is free tomorrow night, I'd highly suggest you try to make it. The crowd was big tonight, but there were plenty of seats still empty, unlike last time where it was pretty much sold out. So I think you'd have a good chance of getting in.

Very cool!

Look out for me in the back row of the choir. I'll be the black guy with the cornrows!

Didn't see that coming. Do you know if their sets are only slightly altered? Hoping to go see this when it comes to Toronto again.

Congrats OP. My only regret is I won't see you. My tickets are for the february show in WV...orchestral pit baby!

Tommy Tallarico said that with all 200+ shows they have done, they have never done the same show twice. With the exception of Halo, Warcraft, FFVII and the opening, everything else is different from the last show I did with them. I'm pretty sure it will be different for your show as well. They are always adding new games to the show.

"The Warcraft music guy" and "the guy who sings the vocals for Civ 4's opening song" -- two people whom you obviously revere

They have a Video Games Live album now? Took them damn long enough. I wanted to buy one when I first went to one, but they just sold other albums :S

Guys, good news to anyone in the NYC/NJ area.

I have two FREE tickets to tonight's show! It starts @ 7:30 at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark, NJ. Either respond here or PM me if you're interested!

Really wanted to go but my work schedule was looking dicey this week. I also assume parking is non-existent in Newark right now due to the blizzard, but I guess PAC has it's own parking garage?

Yeah, it's directly across the street. I'm not too sure about pricing, but it's underground.

Still have them tickets available people!!

That was a great show. Wasn't thrilled by the game selection, but the tracks were great. Also found out the person I was with went to college with Flute Link.
