I'm pretty sure my PS3 is dying

It first started about a few weeks ago when trying to play the first Star Trek: TNG season on blu-ray. the screen would just freeze. I thought maybe it was the current disc I had playing, so tested another one in the season, the second episode in, that froze too.

I then thought maybe it might be the software, maybe a bad box set. Although it never froze in the same spot in the episodes. I could watch the same scene over again, and it would be fine, but then freeze in another part that was fine before. Very sporadic.

I did a file system check through safe mode, it indicated that I have a corrupted file. So I did a system restore (not reformat). When I ran the file system check again, still told me it was corrupted.

I decided to test another one of my blu-rays, this time I stuck in Supernatural S7, and about 40 minutes into the first disc it froze once again. This time when hitting stop and exiting out to the desktop, almost all of my icons on the screen were spinning (very similar to when your mouse cursor turns into that thinking, spinning circle on your desktop). I then decided to just shut down the PS3. When I went to "Turn off System" and hit 'X', it just locked. I had to go and power down the system by just continuing to press down the power button.

At this time, I called Sony to see what their take was on it, and if they had run into others with a similar issue. He told me the 'corrupted message' will pop up every time, no matter how many times you restore or even if you reformat. I thought that a bit odd, but didn't know what else to tell him.

What he did say, he didn't feel it was my hard drive, as locking up on blu-rays is not an indicator of a bad hard drive. So he did not believe doing a reformat would help. He felt it could be either the disc player or my processor, but there could be other factors that may be involved as well. He did recommend that I send it in, which I did set up.

Now just waiting on the box from Sony.

Thanks to those who have taken the time to read. If you have read this, my question to you is, has this happened to you, and if so, what was the issue you found causing this? And what was your solution?

I am not sure if my problem was exactly the same, but my PS3 was acting sort of weird for a few weeks. Then one day I put in a Hugo DVD and it started to stutter then freeze. Next time I turned it on I got YLOD. So may be yours is heading there as well?

I don't have any experience, but you should find that big topic and ask. Did they mention how much it would cost?

I actually thought about posting in that topic, but I found a lot of people doing the same, and there weren't a lot of answers. If mods feel this thread is inappropriate, then by all means, lock it. (not that they need my permission, anyways)

But as for price, I have an original BC unit, so it's going to cost a total $139 ($10 tax included).

However, it's worth it for me, as I have a plethora of PS2 games.

I've received the freezing, but not any stuttering. And I haven't YLOD at all. But could it happen yet, who knows? I'm hoping they will diagnose it and find what is wrong and fix it. I am hoping they don't have to actually stick in a disc and have it repeat the problem. As I said, it was very sporadic. It could happen relatively quickly with it freezing, but they could play a disc for 2 hours and have nothing.

Try cleaning the lenses? It might be dirty and causing it to lock up at points, though that can't explain why you got spinning icons.

Yes, it could be the lenses I suppose with the blu-rays freezing up. I will try cleaning them. Although I agree, I don't think the spinning icons, or the desktop locking up for that matter, would be caused by that.

Usually, spinning icons is an indication that your database is broken and needs to be rebuilt. If you haven't done that, I'd do that first, as it seems like it is an indication that there is something wrong with the HDD.

By rebuilding your database, you mean reformatting?

That's the exact opposite recommendation that the Sony rep indicated. He doesn't feel it's my HDD. What about freezing blu-rays, can that be caused by a broken database?

No, rebuilding is different. It basically empties and rebuilds the OS database To do it, you turn off the PS3, turn it on, and hold down the power button until it turns off. When you start it up next, hold down the power button, and release it after you hear two quick beeps. This should bring you to a menu that has the option to rebuild the database. You won't lose any saved games or files if you do this, but you will lose any custom folders, saved messages or playlists.

I don't know for sure if it could cause freezing blu-rays, but if your OS database is getting so full that is having trouble loading icons and the actual OS itself, I imagine blu-ray playback could encounter problems, since it is played through the OS, to my knowledge.

If you're going to send your PS3 in, I'd give this a try first.

Ok, yeah, going through safe mode. I had done that when doing the file system check. I will definitely give this a try first. Thanks.

I feel your pain OP. A couple months ago my PS3 hard froze during a FFXIII cutscene (of all possible games haha). After that it wouldn't read any kind of disc, neither BluRay, DVD or CD. Everything else worked fine and I could still play my downloadable games. After some deliberation I decided to send it to be repaired and am currently waiting on the phone call to pick it up. Apparently the disc drive got fucked.

OP, I hope your PS3 will survive atleast a little bit longer.

My 15 year old ps1 is still working, what u talkin bout.

Older consoles are less likely to be broken. This should be known by now. Modern day consoles have more parts which can quite easily fuck up. Another thing, the companies lust for more money has grown. Nintendo gets rid of modern day parts in the end of a console ( Wii Mini), Microsoft only cared about being first ( RROD) and Sony uses more and more cheap parts which cause a earlier death of your system.

Rebuying means money.

It's probably the blu ray laser assembly. common problem with the older units, easy to fix.
I had the same issue with mine (freezing leading to eventually not reading anything) had it replaced, and its been rock solid since.

Honestly, in a way I wish it was just straight out broken like this. There would be no question on it. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I won't get it back wondering if it was fixed, waiting to see if it locks up on me. I don't think the techs send any info back letting you know what they found and fixed.

Put your saves on the cloud while you can!

PS+ member here, so yeah, have access to the cloud. I plan to back up everything I want to keep, just in case they need to switch out units.

Thanks, me too. At least until my vacation is over.

So true. The old saying definitely applies here in "they don't make 'em like they used to." I still have my launch SNES system, works great. Hasn't even yellowed. My lanuch PS2 system still worked the last time I checked it, as well. Although I haven't fired it up it up in about 4 years.

I really think it is the laser assembly as well. The oddball thing is it has only happened with my blu-ray video discs (tv shows) not my PS3 games. Could be just chance it hasn't happened with the games, but have put many hours into multiple PS3 games and no freezes. Where after a couple of hours at the most the blu-ray video locks up.

Not sure where you're based so I don't know if it is different, but at least for Canada, they let you know what was wrong. I just got my PS3 back from an out of warranty repair, and they included a receipt and work order summary that told me what the problem was, what they replaced, and what parts were used to replace it.

I'm currently on my fourth if that makes you feel any better. Each one died almost exactly a year apart from launch date (YLOD every time). Currently rocking my 3rd edition 80GB (post Motorstorm bundle) and it has it's up's and downs, but it's lasted longer than the others ones so fuck it.

I sure do miss bc though...

Basing my info on the Sony phone reps I've talked to. They indicated that the info the techs put in is 'very minimal'. And even one of them said "You really don't get any info what was done, but they will let you know if they weren't able to repair it."

Uh, thanks?

But that's heartening to hear that detailed information is given like that. I hope it is the same for U.S., as well.

Wow, you've had some shitty luck with your PS3s. I've had my system for just over 5 years now (bought it in September of 2007), but I believe the manufacturing date was in April, so nearing 6 years on it's life. I think that's pretty good (for the consoles of today).

I sure do miss bc though...

And that's the thing with me, not having BC is not an option. I have over 40 PS2 games, and do not plan on losing access to them. Yes, I have a PS2, but not even sure if it still works, and do not know how well the upscaler on my PS2 is for playing games on my 60" tv. I am guessing it is nowhere near as good as my PS3's upscaler.

I had the phone rep confirm to me twice that I will be sent back the same type of unit (BC) that I sent in.

My PS3 seemingly died this week. Shut down, beeped three times. My brother turned it on, was in the recovery menu, then shut down pretty much halfway through while beeping again. Now after turning it on it beeps thrice and blinks, it doesn't go further than that. My bro said it was warm when shutting down for the first time. There's no visible dust on the exhaust covers. It had shut down two or three times randomly the last year, the last time was the last when watching a tv episode from an USB stick.. It was't hot then, though, and went through recovery without a hitch.

I've googled a bit and everyone claims it is something else.

Tell me, is my launch fatty gone for good?

This is why the new PS3 model is easily the best.

All my dead PS3's stopped reading discs.

In the new model, the lens is reachable, and I'm pretty sure it may even be replacable without dismantling the case.

So...did you get a BC unit back? I'm worried about the life of my unit, and hope that when it goes, it can be fixed or replaced...
