I'm Ready for the Next Step of From Software RPGs

I've been thinking a lot about new game announcements for E3 and people's predictions. A lot of people are hoping for a Bloodborne 2 or something along the same lines as it from From Software. Personally, I think it's time to see what From can do next.

I love the Souls games and the fact it helped establish a new subgenre in RPGs, but I want to see what's beyond them. In last 8 years since Demon's Souls launch, we have gotten 5 different permutations of games that share the same DNA, and that's cool. However, I think it's time to move onto the next stage.

For instance, I believe the first stage was From's King's Field games and their derivatives (Shadow Tower, Eternal Ring). The second stage is of course the Souls games and Bloodborne, which were inspired by the King's Field games but evolved into something very different. I want to see the games beyond that, the ones that take after the Souls games like Souls did from King's Field but evolve into something new.

I think we all are.. the fans anyway. I never talk about it, say the name or even mention the possibility of BB2. Cause I don't want to be let down. If it was at this E3, it would hold the power of 2 suns for me.

Ah well..

They did something extraordinary with the Souls games. You know, inventing that formula. I don't think it's fair or even realistic to expect them to pull that off again.

It'd be cool if they can (come up with something equally new and refreshing), but I would be 100% happy with just a bunch more games in that vein with some small iterations here and there.

I so want something new that takes the Souls DNA like Bloodborne did...more sequels isn't something I want right now. We've had a Souls game every year since 2014, and 2017 didn't have one. I think it's ok to give Souls/Bloodborne a break til 2020 or so.

Maybe the Armored Core reboot will be that game. I wouldn't put it past them, at least.

Very curious to see what direction it goes in.

It's not going to happen this gen I'm afraid but once their games are 60fps on all platforms I'm perfectly set.

I hope they move on because I am pretty much done with the Souls series. Part of the appeal for me was how new it all felt to me back when I played Dark Souls 1. Figuring out how the game works, what you are and aren't supposed to do. Dark Souls 2 and 3 couldn't really offer the same surprises anymore because the formula didn't really change.

And if they do continue with the Souls series I hope they also take some cues from The Surge.

I think just expanding on the formula like they did with Chalice dungeons, but increasing value in that replay-ability and having a greater focus on multiplayer elements (Optional?) in some areas will help to improve the dynamic.

I have never played an AC game ( i might actually back inPS 1 era).
What kind of mech games are they exactly? Sim or arcade? Kinda like Virtual On with missions? What makes them good?

I want them to revisit the first person dungeon crawler so we can get another King's Field. I'd love to see what they could do with that.

I hope Dark Souls is dead. They have no reason to be working with Bandai Namco anymore now that they have Kadokawa.

Forget that nonsense.

We want Armored Core and Tenchu

Oh, yes please. I'd totally forgotten they were from, uh, From.

There's a proper shortage of games with ninja's who do actual ninja shit these days. Game like metal gear revengence and Ninja Gaiden, while good in their own right, weren't really 'ninja' games. You just played as a ninja that was capable of mowing through hoards of enemies, and not really doing proper sneaky ninja stuff. I tried Mark of the Ninja a few years ago, and it didn't click properly, but I understand that's one of few since the Tenchu games.

Its been ages, but I remember really liking 1 or 2 of the Tenchu entries. They were a bit wonky with some stuff from memory but they allowed for some nice open ended stealthy ninja playstyles iirc. Love to see that redone now with modern tech to power it, with some of the lessons From have since learnt with development of the Souls games.

And to keep it somewhat on topic, now I think about it I'd love to see a TenchuSouls style game, with more of an emphasis on stealthing and sneaking then combat. I'd be so set

We want Armored Core and Tenchu
Armored Core (and Tenchu to a lesser extent) have always been separate from the fantasy RPGs at From. Since Armored Core games were developed concurrent with both KF and Souls games, I don't really see them interfere with each other.

yeah many people want the next Souls-like. And if it comes I'll play it. But at the very least distance yourself from the property for a few years and bring something new.

People forget that Demon's Souls also didn't come from nothing.

You know, Shadow Tower Abyss, and King's Field before that.

Hell, when a friend first asked me in Sept 2009 if I was getting Demon's Souls, I told him that I didn't even know what that was. So I watched the trailer for it and instantly recognized what games were its progenitors. A lot of people haven't even heard of those games, let alone played them, which is why they are seemingly dismissed so often.

Next gen TENCHU, is all I crave. So unfortunate it didn't morph into a proper niche genre.
(Although to be fair, I do consider Dragon's Dogma as being partially inspired by it).

Either way, I thought Armored Core was already confirmed as being one of the projects From's is working on?

I thought Nioh improves on Souls combat in many ways (while being worse at many other things I know). Maybe get some inspiration from that. Stances were good, Ki pulses amazing even.

I think 60 fps on console is a fucking must.

I want a licensed Berserk game made by from. I know there is a Musou one out but I think From can take the franchise well beyond that.

I doubt it would happen but I would be there on day one (ideally on pc).

A new Tenchu would actually match my thirst for a spiritual successor to Kings Field

Dafuq? Besides that, Tenchu 1&2 (the best two) weren't even developed by FROM. Did they just absorb key members from Acquire or something later on?

How about a From game set in an alternate future? But instead of a single player game it'll be a squad based co-op game. Instead of swords they'll have guns. And there would be chest high walls everywhere.

Thoughts?

My biggest hope is that they aren't a one-trick pony. I'm with you, enjoyed the Souls games thoroughly, but it's time for something new. After I beat DS3, I was burnt out on the formula to the point of never wanting to touch anything labeled "Souls-like" ever again.

To be fair, I believe the only Tenchu game by From was that Bomberman clone.

They've never even tried. Have they made any game like Tenchu?

I can imagine the Souls formula kinda-sorta being used as a floor for a new Tenchu game, but mostly lock-on, combat, and item use.

Yeah I think reimagining Armored Core would be great. They don't need to be bound to the old gameplay convention, but take that setting and put their own spin on it with the excellent use of mood they mastered in the other games.

They own the IP and were involved on publishing it. So, I would expect a release under their name.

On a side note, now that AC is mentioned, I'm once again painfully aware that there aren't any Mechwarrior / Heavy Gear / Earthsiege type of simulators incoming.
Why the world has forsaken those type of games, I will never understand.

You realized that some developers publish their games, but most publishers aren't the actual developer right? Sure, I guess they could try to take on Tenchu, but they could easily take on a racing game too for that matter.

Still have no idea how Dragon's Dogma was inspired in any way by Tenchu. It had more in common with Devil May Cry, Monster Hunter and Skyrim with very slight Souls inspiration (almost entirely aesthetically).

It's time for Armored Core x Tenchu. I want to sneak around buildings as a 10m tall mech and do cool sword choreography to eliminate other mechanical targets.

No, and I hate you for bringing up such a bad thought.

I'm thinking an open world hub, with "dungeons" similar to individual areas in the souls games. Day/night cycle to bring back world tendency. Maybe with some steampunk/clockwork elements.

From is a larger company now, so if they are interested (and that's the grand IF), they can afford to have a potential title in-house.

And as long as the game is good (and exists), that's all it matters.

As another side note, I would love to get an HD version of Demon's Soul, specially on PC. But I guess Sony would need to approve that.
And I concur with OP. I hope From's tries to experiment with different genres/style. They have earned enough good will and fame to afford a small budgeted one.
