I'm thinking about a 40GB PS3. Am I really missing that much?

I've never really looked that deeply into the PS3, but my parents offered to get me one for Christmas this year and I think I may take them up on it. I can't find a 60GB anywhere in the area at all so it looks like my choices are the 80GB and 40GB. I know the 40GB lacks any PS2 compatibility, and I suppose that's okay seeing as I own two perfectly functioning PS2's, still. So my questions are as follows.

What did the PS2 compatibility do for my PS2 games that wouldn't be done by my PS2 consoles now? Any upscaling? If so, does it actually improve the picture at all?

What are the other differences between the 80GB and the 40GB that I'd care about? I don't need SACD, I don't need the multi-card reader. How much will the 2 missing USB slots really hurt me? Would the 65nm Cells be a good trade for what's being gutted?

Well PS2 games look a little bit better on the PS3 but as the PS3 library grows who will have time for old games anyway. And if some PS2 game comes around that you really need to play just use your ordinary PS2.

There's upscaling in the 60gb, but the difference isn't that much if you have a HDTV with a good upscaler. Beyond that, taking into consideration your other criteria, I'd say you're not missing out on anything by going with the 40gb

Unless unhooking your PS2 is of paramount importance, the 40GB is the smart choice.

All you're missing is PS2 support and memory card slots. The card slots are unnecessary thanks to the magic of USB. PS2 support is probably unnecessary since you most likely already own a PS2.

You have to decide for yourself if its worth another $100 to you, but I think its a good deal... that is unless you find a 60GB somewhere for a good price.

Very true. I don't know why I've fixated on HAVING to have the backwards compatibility. Maybe it's just cause I feel like they're taking something away from me. Even though I don't need it, I still wanna smack them and scream rape.

As we head into 2008, I'm still playing PSX games on my PS2 that were released over a decade ago. I'm not going to argue your second point because it's valid, but I think you're a little too quick to brush off the lack of BC.

Edit: This wasn't in response to the OP, who already owns a PS2.

Personally, the fewer consoles cluttering up my living room, the better. BC is a must for me, considering I still own plenty of PS2 games that I would occasionally like to play.

It pretty much depends on how much $100 is to you at the moment.

PS2 backwards compatibility is not available right now, but much like the PS1 backwards compatibility, it will come to you in the form of a firmware upgrade/PSN store download/install.

I would not bet money on this.

Originally, I wanted a BC-PS3 so I can play GT4 with one PS3 and 2 PS2 (my roommate has one) with the 3 screen setup. And then I realize I will never be able to afford 2 additional LCD screen. I gave up that idea and brought a 40GB.

If you take a look at Sony's PS2 price drop history, couple with Xbox360's non-price drop for the last two years, you probably won't see a price drop for PS3 until mid 2009. So I think this is a good time to buy. Don't forget the $100 Sony card credit too.

Okay. I'd still like to hear more about the PS3 40GB v. the 80GB. I'm calmer about the prospect of a 40GB now, but more talk is always welcome.

Let's talk about deals now. I'm thinking about getting the 40GB, a 2nd controller and Ratchet & Clank for $500 at Costco. They have a bang up return policy and it's a minor money savings. Are there any deals out there now that can blow this out of the water?

I think Motor Storm, PS2 compatibility and the extra 40GB of hard drive space is probably worth the extra $100.

Then again, there's something appealing about the revised tech in the new model and I enjoy Spiderman so that's my thoughts.

I've seen that deal. Its ok, but you're really not saving any money there. But if the return policy is good, go with it. Those "pack-ins" are things every PS3 owner needs anyway.

I just ordered a 40 gig PS3 yesterday brand new in the box for $275 from what I assume was a failed Christmas scalper. :D

I have now completed the holy trinity of home consoles. Realistically, the 40 gig is a bit of a tard pack, but it is still a good Uncharted/Resistance player.

$250? Damn :(

GAF definitive PS3 buyer's guide.

0. Do you own a PS2?
Yes - Go to question 1
No - Go to question 2
1. Will you want to replay PS2 games?
Yes - Buy a backwards compatible PS3
No - Continue to question 2
2. Have you played all the PS2 games you want to?
Yes - Sell the PS2 (if owned) and buy the cheapest PS3
No - Continue playing PS2 games, when done buy the cheapest PS3

Feel free to edit/improve and post in similar threads/bookmark.

I have a 60 Gb and I don't see a reason for not buying the 40 Gb one. I don't use PS2 upscaling that much, not since I found out why God of War II is so hard on the PS3.

To me backward compatibility is worth an extra hundred bucks easily, but I suppose that other's mileage may vary.

Of course, it is not as egregiously bad as other historical tard packs like the Core and the NES Control Set that didn't include Mario/Duck Hunt. :D

If you can get a 60/80 gig go for that instead.

I agree. Something about the 40GB rubs me the wrong way. Maybe it's the fact that it has less vents.

edit: err less vents

Not sure where it'd fit, but:

x. Do you want Motorstorm?
Yes - Consider that it is no longer a $100 price difference
No- OK, still $100 difference

If you were already planning on buying Motorstorm, then the 80Gig becomes more worth the extra cost. Of course, if you couldn't care less about Motorstorm, then, yeah, 40 Gig is all good.

I'm big on bc, in fact I play more psx and ps2 games on my ps3 then well ps3 games. Doesn't help I only got 3 games for it and some downloads of course. Can't really use my old launch ps2 anymore so I had to pass on the 40gb model and get the 60gb model instead. I have no regrets.

Well that MotorStorm bundle won't be there forever. I think people in that position don't really need a buyer's guide. They just need to stop being so freaking indecisive.

Don't PS2 games look horrid on HDTVs, and PS3 scaling goes a long way to fixing this? (I don't have a HDTV so I don't know myself)
