I'm torn between buying a new PC or a PS4

So my PC from 2010 (EDIT : actually is from mid 2009) is definitely too aged to play the games I expect (The Witcher 3) in decent conditions.

First of all I'd like to say I'm not a graphic whore. I just want a clean looking game, with good graphics and a steady framerate. I'm not into tweaking every single bit of options to get the best experience possible. But I don't like games with terrible IQ, framerate and loading times.

Changing my PC, considering I'd like to buy a new monitor (24' instead of my current 22'), would cost me around 1000€. Now a PS4 would be much cheaper, and it already proven it can run very good looking games at 1080p 60fps. Now I'd have to buy a 1080p TV too, since mine is only 720p, but they are cheap nowadays, and it would still cost me less than 1000€ by far. It would also allow me to play PS4 exclusives games.

On the other hand, a PC would allow me to play games that aren't available on PS4 such as Titanfall, which I'm interested in, kinda. Also, I have a preference for the Xbox One controller, and would do much of my PC gaming with it. Also, steam sales would make me save a lot of money in the long run. Gaming just costs more on consoles.

So yeah, I'm really torn between these two options. My current financial situation doesn't allow me to do both. Considering the info I've given, what would you suggest GAF ?

go PS4, its cheaper for the moment and will do well against pc for the next few years, and it will have exclusives. If you get a vita too you always have the remote play option too.

If you're not interested in Sony's first-party games I suggest you go with a PC. Otherwise you should save up so you can afford both.

Surely your PC can handle TitanFall as it is?

Regardless, just make a list of the Sony exclusives you care about, and PC exclusives you care about, and pick the one you like the most.

Well, I'm a console gamer.
So as a console gamer, I can only say: GET A PS4!
Cheaper, PS+ is unbelievable, SONY 1st Party titeles, easier to set-up, etc. etc.

If you take the cost of PS+ and retail games PC gaming is cheaper.

Anyway build a computer OP. All this sweet hardware dropping in price makes it a great time to build a PC on the cheap.

I'd go with a PC.

Doesn't sound like you're into Sony exclusives as you mention none you're looking forward to. The PS4 library is still very weak.

Personally I'd go with the PS4 but I'm primarily a console gamer, but that new TV will have other uses so that's another feather in its cap & Im thoroughly enjoying my PS4 atm.

I just brought a Samsung 42" smart TV for £450 so depends on your TV budget & size/specs etc.

I would definitely go PC first. It will have the best multi platform versions and you can always get a PS4 later when the exclusives that are coming out now are cheaper.

PC is the clear choice here. PS4 just doesn't have the library to justify a purchase. A few exclusives are around the horizon but even still PC has so much more going for it

I personally opted for the pc starting this year and I pray to every god and Mr Kojima that mgs 5 TPP makes it way to steam every night.

If you cant afford both, it means you couldnt afford a high end PC in the first place.
Get a PS4, save up some money and buy a high end PC next year.

The library for the PS4 isn't all that hot yet. If the upcoming exclusives like Infamous don't do it for you, get a PC. You can always pick up the console for cheap later if the situation changes.

A "good" PC will be more powerful than the new consoles, be cheaper than gaming on consoles over the long-run, grant you access to hundreds of quality exclusives you'll never see on consoles (seriously, 3/4 of my ~350 game Steam library is PC exclusives), grant backwards compatibility to dozens of prior consoles, and will give you far greater non-gaming utility,

PC has better value overall. If you pay like 600-700 USD for a new PC right now it is still better for you buck than PS4. Games are cheaper, sales are all over the place (Steam sales anyone?) and you're still going to have better hardware through the life of PS4. Only thing that you're missing are exlusives, but what stops you from buying the console later down the line while there are lots of good exclusives?

Uh, what ?

The PC I bought in 2010 cost me around 1000€. It ran all the games in very high until The Witcher 2 and Crysis 2/3, and I could still run them at high. Maybe it was playing in 1680*1050 though.

I'd go for a PC for now. There isnt much out for the PS4 at the moment. Like you say a huge amount of content for the pc.

If I had a large budget, I would definitely get a PC. It already has a humongous library of games that'll only get bigger.

As someone who looks at the long run, PC would cheaper over time than a PS4 (especially if you have to buy a new TV). You've also got the advantage of so many more titles and if you're not interested in the first party PS4 titles then it makes it even easier to decide.

Go for a PC, barring the PS exclusives you'll have access to a larger library of games as well as backwards compatability across the generations. It's what I did, built a PC for around £800 and it's pretty powerful and I think it'll keep me going for a while.

Geta PS4 in a couple years time when there is a greater selection of games and the machine is cheaper.

Well, here's a question: would you like to inject new "fuel" even in your old library of games, or backward compatibility is meaningless to you and you're looking just for new releases?

For me it's the former, so I bought my new PC a month ago (i5 4670K, GTX 770, 8GB ram, 250 GB SSD) and I couldn't be happier about it.
I'm not just ready for anything "next gen" is going to throw at me, but I'm also enjoying going back to many of my old purchases to experience them under a new, fresher light.

Coming from a very console driven individual, I opted to upgrade my PC. I actually just bought a new set up with a EVGA GTX 770 SC. Threw every game I own on steam to it and it barely broke a sweat.

The way I see it last gen I had only a handful of console exclusives. FF, TLOU, and the gears games. Considering PS4 and XB1 are now basically computers ports of 3rd party console games to PC will be more likely the case.

And really, get the PC now and wait 5 years to buy the PS4 for exclusives for half the price.

Well PC it is then. I was already moving towards this direction anyway.

Yeah PC is definitely the way to go... PS4 will drop fairly quickly in price I'd imagine since it'll benefit quickly from die shrinks/hardware price drops, and there won't be a lot in the way of PS4 exclusives over the next year or two.

Best answer.
There really is only one game that you would need to a new PC to run flawlessly: Witcher 3.

My recommendation is to keep your current PC and play TF
Buy a PS4 and play Second Son, The Order, MG, countless other games and...The Witcher 3.

When you have the money to do it right, build a PC that will give you 4 years of heavy lifting...plus a new Elder Scrolls will be out by then.

Edit.
Just saw that you made a decision to go with the PC. Have fun!

Does buying a PS4 means selling your current PC? If not, based on your description of it, you can still play most of the PC exclusives. Buying a PS4 now would give you acess to all the PS4 exclusives, now and trough the lifespan of the console.

Right now I'd say pick up a PS4, unless you're willing to invest at least 2 to perhaps 3 times the price of the PS4 on a good PC gaming rig. We are too early in this new console lifecycle to see how games developed, exclusively for the new consoles will perform on PCs. Hopefully they'll perform reasonably well but the PS3/360 showed us otherwise (Rockstart, I still haven't forgotten what you did with the PC port of GTA 4), plus I think that by year's end we might have DDR4 as a new standard for PC memory so I think it would be worth it to hold out at least for that.

So yeah, get a Playstation 4, at this point in time, or wait until the Witcher comes out before doing so. There aren't really immensely compelling reasons to pick up the console today.

That monitor seems overpriced, but I am not familiar with European price points.

Is there any way of just spending the money on an upgrade to your PC? Components are relatively cheap and easy to install compared to purchasing a new rig. A processor and RAM upgrade would likely increase your performance for cheap, an SSD would help with load times, and a decent video card would help render graphics more smoothly. I currently have my PC wired into a 40" TV in my room. I find the lag everyone keeps complaining about unnoticeable (please don't ruin that for me by pointing out something I can't unsee). I am super happy with my setup.

The only reason I would get a PS4 is if the majority of my friends had one, or if I really liked anime games from japan and other exclusives etc.

EDIT: OP Already made his choice. Hope you enjoy your decision :D

If you want the most powerfulyou can't get beter than a ps4 for 400$ but you have to count the PS + assuming that you want to play online (if you already have a vita or a ps3 it's really great i'm ps+ since november and got more than 25 games since)But the games are more expensive on ps4 (besides the fact that on PC you can get almost every games for free depending on your honesty) If all you want is games pc has a lot of indie retro and emulators but ps4 has some nice exclusivities so it's all depending on what you want (what you really really want).

If It was my choice? PS4.

I use Gamefly and resell games so it comes out to about the same price as a Steam sale when I buy it for $60 and sell it for $40 on CL or with a bonus deal to Gamestop or something, or if I Gamefly it and spend a couple weeks on it and send it back. I don't 'collect' games nor do I replay them so having them in my library is pointless.

Steam sales are great for some stuff, but I find with new releases, even if they are sold at $10-20 cheaper doesn't save me as much as something like Gamefly does, especially if I don't like the game.

But, the library is extremely lacking on the PS4, so for your choice and not gaming heavily on the PC for a few years ... I would go PC. You'll be playing catch up on games that will be a lot cheaper. PS4 is a new platform so any game coming out is going to be full price (except for PS+ but you may have already played a majority of those games).
