I'm trying to understand dubstep music

That comparison makes some sort of sense, but I still feel it's missing something. Shouldn't there be some "good" artists that do some of the things Skrillex does? Again, I point to the melody that is insanely good in those two songs that I've yet to hear anything even remotely like from some of the links. The links people have posted are ALSO good songs, but not in the same way.

Actually, I guess thinking about it it might be like someone coming into the metal thread saying they like new In Flames and asking about anything else similar and people saying they suck, go listen to older In Flames or Soilwork or Kalmah or older Dark Tranquility or Insomnium. Sure those would be great bands to listen to, but they don't quite hit the same spot new In Flames does. I guess I'm just a bit different than a lot of music connoisseurs in that I don't see having a big, digestible melody or simplified songwriting as bad. I see it as something different, especially if they infuse that with older techniques. Still, I kind of feel like even recommending those things for the hypothetical new In Flames listener would be far closer to his tastes than some of the things I've seen posted in retort to Skrillex. They just feel like completely different genres sometimes.

The problem I have with brostep is that it seems like the artists are only there to show others how big their dicks are. That is to say it's more of a pissing contest on who can make the most zany sounding wubwubwub than anything else. All the brostep music I've heard(My friend who's a producer/DJ only makes brostep so I'm constantly drowned in it) almost always goes with the same intro to their music which is to start of with something sombre, before going into crazy highend bass just for the fuck of it, as if the point wasn't to make music, but to show the world that you can make the most crazy sounding mid bass tones out there. And that's pretty much the entire song structure for 70%+ of brostep music. sombre intro, pissing contest bass, sombre break, pissing contest bass, mixture of sombre break and pissing contest bass, fin. There's next to no creativity and seems to be just an avenue for dudes to show off their producing skills, not to make music.

From a non-electronic-music-educated listener those 2nd things you posted were really good, but they sound like a completely different freaking genre than Skrillex. To me it feels like posting Wolves in the Throne Room as evidence why someone shouldn't listen to In Flames. Yeah they're both metal, but they're clearly trying to accomplish completely different feelings.

yup, that's why most people who know the difference tend to call american dubstep, brostep. UK dubstep came way before US dubstep,(early 2000's) so I don't like attaching the dubstep moniker to a scene that sounds completly different and almost has a complete different set of influences. I guess if you realllly want to listen to brostep I'd recommend Nero or Rusko......not that I think they're any good, but its about the best the scene has come up with at this point.

EDIT: This is what I'm talking about right here:

Yeah I know what you mean (even though those metal comparisons are way over my head). I guess French electro house is probably closer to brostep than actual dubstep. Maybe Justice, SebAstian, Busy P, MSTRKRFT. They all make the same kind of metally populist stuff that Skrillex does and are probably just as influential on him as the artists mentioned in this thread.

So far, I haven't liked most of the stuff posted in this thread, but this track is catchy. I like the R&B style chord progression, with that subdued, but still wub wub type of electronic bass.

Yeah, I actually kind of like this. Maybe because there is actually some musical progression without heavily digitized sounds. Or something.

thats a very good comparison

they prob have similar fanbases

I've officially given up. Close thread.

No one knows your tastes better than you, just keep clicking through dubstep tubes. If you seriously can't find stuff you like then give up but don't expect us to post one song out of tons of stuff out there that makes you change your whole mind about the genre.

I've heard some of this stuff, but to me (again, as an outsider), that's not why I like the Skrillex songs that I like. So is the insanely catchy synth melody in those Skrillex songs not the reason people listen to his stuff? Because to me, yeah the wubs sound stupid as hell in most stuff, but they seem to work well in those songs by Skrillex, because they balance things out. Is there other electronic music that does that same sort of thing? Even without the wub sounds are there electronic things that do that same thing? The closest I've heard to that sort of sound is usually in video game music remixes and some chip tunes sort of stuff.

So, is that moniker part of where the hate comes from? Is this kind of like how older black metal people that listen to stuff like Burzum tend to hate the newer style stuff like Dimmu Borgir or Cradle of Filth, because it doesn't stick to the original intent of the genre and goes off on a very very different tangent?

And anyway, if that stuff is "brostep" or whatever, are there "good" artists doing similar things that electronic connoisseurs would be able to point to?

Where's the drop?

Anything within the glitch genre then. Crystal Castles would be good, as well as Justice or even Neon Indian(more chillwave, but it has that sort of glitchy feel to it) And for straight up brostep I can only recommend Nero and that's pushing it.

But ya that's mainly where the hate comes from. If it was called something else I'm sure the hate would still be there, but it wouldn't be as pronounced.

Noisia, phace, and similar artist could be up your ally.

Since the thread is moving away from dubstep.
Sweat - Snoop Dogg/David Guetta

David guetta is really bad house man.

See, now this seems to make sense to me. It's similar enough to what Skrillex is doing, but obviously a bit more intelligent (especially with the bass wub type sounds). This is the sort of equivalence I'd expect.

Despite fixing the main thing I dislike about Skrillex, it's still missing the main thing I actually like from him, though. If you were to combine that Noisa stuff with a heavy chip tunes melody you'd really have me.

I've only found one dubstep track I like, Bangarang, and it was after seeing this. =P

I figure if I can like one dubstep track I can like others, but I still haven't found any others I like.

I dont enjoy listening to dubstep casually, but it awesome to listen to at a festival or club.

The atmosphere really makes a big difference.

Exactly. Skrillex is so offensive.

Listen to some good Skream, Benga, some Magnetic Man, early Nero, and so on.

Funnily enough, Skrillex is the only dubstep I've listened to that doesn't rape my ears.

So glad some gaffers know of real dubstep aka burial/four tet

If you like radiohead and real dubstep

Listen to burial/four tet-mirror feat thom Yorke.

Benga- 26 basslines?

Not every benga track sounds like this though, just to be clear.

This post seriously reads like an encrypted spy message to me.

Brostep: Skrillex, Rusko, pretty much most American inspired dubstep based from aggressive metal and mid/high end bass

Verdict: do not let it touch your ears

Dubstep: Burial, Zomby, King Midas Sound, anything from Hyperdub, focusing on low end bass, dark ambiance, and inspired by 2 step garage and dub

Verdict: blast that shit all day

it's funny because rusko is english

that said i wouldn't consider a lot of what is posted in this thread as old or new dubstep. rustie? jacques green? wat, not dubstep

any electronic music song that doesn't have bed springs is an instant failure anyways

All of the pioneers went back to house and garage after they heard what the Americans had done with dubstep :p

Good. Honestly brostep is a little overplayed.

It's cool to rave too but honestly i've been getting a little tired of it. A lot of it is starting to sound typical and similar.

I've been getting into some of the more Future Garage oriented stuff (post-dubstep, 2-step garage, Funky)

Brostep in clubs/raves is absolutely amazing. It's there I see the appreciation for it, as it's something you can grind and go crazy to and where the crazy wuwubwub makes sense. Outside of the club though, it's a different story.

That's not even slightly dubstep (Grimes is a goddess though).

Oh I know, I just wanted an excuse to post a Grimes track :p

My body is ready
