Rated R for sequences of strong bloody violence and a scene of sexuality.

Synopsis:
Visionary director Tarsem Singh (The Cell, The Fall) and producers Gianni Nunnari (300), Mark Canton (300) and Ryan Kavanaugh (The Fighter) unleash an epic tale of treachery, vengeance and destiny in Immortals, a stylish and spectacular 3-D adventure. As a power-mad king razes ancient Greece in search of a legendary weapon, a heroic young villager rises up against him in a thrilling quest as timeless as it is powerful. The brutal and bloodthirsty King Hyperion (Mickey Rourke) and his murderous Heraklion army are rampaging across Greece in search of the long lost Bow of Epirus. With the invincible Bow, the king will be able to overthrow the Gods of Olympus and become the undisputed master of his world. With ruthless efficiency, Hyperion and his legions destroy everything in their wake, and it seems nothing will stop the evil king's mission. As village after village is obliterated, a stonemason named Theseus (Henry Cavill) vows to avenge the death of his mother in one of Hyperion's raids. When Theseus meets the Sybelline Oracle, Phaedra (Freida Pinto), her disturbing visions of the young man's future convince her that he is the key to stopping the destruction. With her help, Theseus assembles a small band of followers and embraces his destiny in a final desperate battle for the future of humanity.

Tarsem has some awesome fashion designers working for him. I don't know how he does it.

goddamn that fighting scene so good

Yeah, I was a bit wary but that thing sold me. Looks like a much, much better version of the overrated 300. No surprise it is from the same producers with those ramp effects.

What the fuck was that?

Is there going to be a "plausible" reason/explanation for the enemies to start moving in slow motion after they get hit?

Whatever effect they were going for it just broke the whole scene up.....

I had no idea that Tarsem made this. Between that and the fight scene linked in the OP, I'm now super-excited.

I just hope this movie has some awesome dissolves like The Fall.

That one and the hand turning into the island (or vice versa?) blew me away.

They are gods and titans.
When they fight; the are kind of within their own realm of speed and strength. Once they die, the are no longer in control of their movements, hence their function is levelled back to the normal rules of gravity. Just like how you technically age slower when you're in an airplane. It makes it all the more enjoyable!

I'm surprised loads of people couldn't figure this out.

This would have been the perfect compliment to God of War 3 in March 2010. Instead, we got a very disappointing update to Clash of the Titans.

I don't think this looks anything like Clash of the Titans. :P
In fact, the film has been cut and reedited in the UK for gruesome decapitations and extreme bloody violence.

This looks sooooo much better than Clash of the Titans. That film was boring, where if this is a disaster it will at least be interesting to behold in the hands of Tarsem.

This movie looks like it has things I should love... but I find myself struggling to care enough to see it. :(

EDIT:

I will watch any movie with Greek mythology.
I am normally the exact same way, but I can't put my finger on why this movie doesn't excite me.

Lol. This is awesome

Saw the trailer during PA3.
The trailer was better than PA3.

So I'm woefully uninformed. Is this movie going to be good?

I already said before that Tarsem Singh makes lame movies (with awesome visuals), but yeah that fight scene was entertaining, could have done without the excessive slow-mo that's become a genre staple now but damn that was some live action God of War shit.

this looks so fucking terrible i'm convinced anyone with positive impressions got paid off

Was this shot in 3d or is it a post conversion?

CS: Tarsem, looking at some of the films you've made, it seems like your style would very much lend itself to 3D. How quickly did you take creating a film with that technique?

Singh: Very easily. I just looked at it and it was exactly that. It's how I tend to shoot. It's much more applicable to 3D than most directors. A lot of directors' work is easily transferable. [Tim] Burton would be one. But if you're looking at Paul Greengrass' work, you don't really want to see "The Bourne Identity" in that particular way. It works for him because of his grittiness. But for people that tend to shoot sort of tableau-ey with long takes, 3D is sort of made for that. It lets you judge the space much better. I just think that, fortunately, the style that I've done in my previous films -- not that I'll keep doing this forever -- but for the last few that I've done, 3D fits it very well. It was a logical progression. We did a lot of scenes that we shot in 3D and a lot of the other stuff we shot, we shot in 2D and took plates in 3D. I found it too limited in terms of action to shoot it all in 3D. Some things that you do, the camera makes it look like a 1950's movie because the camera becomes too bulky. The action sequences and most of the stuff with the Gods was actually converted. But it's really about knowing what you want to do with it instead of just giving it to somebody to convert. The little girl and the visions and everything, though, we actually shot in 3D.

4 am here.
cut me some slack man.

I found The Fall underwhelming so I don't have high hopes for this.

I'm not expecting it to do really well, especially against the competition this weekend.

The red band clip is as god awful or worse than the trailers.

You lied to me, expendable, you lied to me.

Tarsem doesn't have a single clue on how to stage, shoot or edit action.

I mean, The Fall is a masterpiece. This looks like cheesy fun, that is all I'm expecting. It will definitely be a huge step down, but I could see it being entertaining.

Looks like one of those artsy fartsy movies I was forced to watch in film class. But I'd see this for Cavill.

What 300-inspired action film were you forced to watch in film class?!

Much of gaf has a hatred for simple, fun movies, so opinions here will be polarized :P.

Im pretty sure it is a bunch of cuts from a much longer scene...unless that is some really poor editing which I dout

I'd be much nicer to this thing if it didn't have the "caked in excrement" color palette.

Why can't it look like this picture?

Will see for Mickey.

He needs better work. Unfortunately straight dramas and character pieces are in low-demand.

He is on another publicity warparth. Wrote this article today:

Mickey Rourke Takes Down ‘Iron Man 2′ Filmmakers and Martin McDonagh; Exits His ‘Seven Psychopaths’

Leaves a super promising up-and-coming film from In Bruges director cause he was a "jerkoff" then he shit all over the Iron Man 2 filmmakers and Marvel (at Crave):

“[W]hen I did Ivan Vanko in Iron Man, I fought… You know, I explained to Justin Theroux, to the writer, and to [Jon] Favreau, that I wanted to bring some other layers and colors [to the charater], not just make this Russian a complete murderous revenging bad guy. And they allowed me to do that. Unfortunately, the [people] at Marvel just wanted a one-dimensional bad guy, so most of the performance ended up the floor.”

“[It’s] ****ing too bad, but it’s their loss. If they want to make mindless comic book movies, then I don’t want to be a part of that. I don’t want to have to care so much and work so hard, and then fight them for intelligent reasoning, and just because they’re calling the shots they… You know, I didn’t work for three months on the accent and all the adjustments and go to Russia just so I could end up on the floor. Because that can make somebody say at the end of the day, oh **** ‘em, I’m just going to mail it in. But I’m not that kind of guy. I’m never going to mail it in.”

I don't see him shitting on anyone, just talking the straight dope. I guess if you aren't sucking dicks at Hollywood you're shitting on them. Marvel being in the business of releasing crap for the minimum common denominator isn't really news anyway.

Ugh. Damnit.
I was so excited for Seven Psychopaths too.

To his credit, his performance in Iron Man 2 was amazing and the writers/Marvel's insistence at adding the Avengercrap totally undermined it.
Could've been so much more.

In the MTV video he says they have no balls:

"If they let you play the bad guy with other dimensions other than one dimensional," Rourke told MTV of playing a villain. "You have to fight for that though, to bring layers to the character. Otherwise, if you're working for the wrong studio or let's say a director that doesn't have any balls, then they're just gonna want it to be the evil bad guy."

"So, if you're working with some good studio guys that got brains and you're working with a director with a set of nuts that'll let you incorporate that then it's fun," he added, finishing with a zinger: "Otherwise, you end up with what happened on 'Iron Man.'"

And I meant "shitting" on them in a positive way, they deserved it for that turd of a movie.

I think Mickey is direct and will just say what is on his mind (to his detriment) but that doesn't mean what he was saying is wrong.

Has Favreau ever proved that he's willing to stand up for himself or stick by his guns and take heat for a creative decision?

He's always come off as "the nice guy director".

Got into one of the screenings...Mickey Rourke is absolutely amazing in this. Also, for any breaking bad fans,
Hector Salamanca is in there doing his schtick lol

Repost of my quote from the other thread:

I'm sure there's an official thread somewhere, but I couldn't find it.

Anyway, just saw the film tonight at an advanced screening. I thought it was really great. The story is nothing amazing, but its at least very coherent. I thought Rourke and Cavill both gave really good performances and were likable in their own completely different ways. Supporting actors like Pinto and Dorff also did a great job in their respective roles as well.

Going into it I had fears that the fight scenes wouldn't feel visceral and that everything would feel floaty like 300 did for me (fake CG blood that has no weight, in particular) but that wasn't the case. Even though the movie was R rated, it was much more violent than I expected coming from Tarsem - I was pleasantly surprised. One scene in particular -
where one of the gods intervenes to stop an outnumbered Theseus from getting killed by going around and smashing the heads of all the baddies with his hammer
- was particularly awesome to watch and yielded applause from the crowd afterwards.

While there is a lot of green screen, the production design elements play a huge role in shaping the world. All the individual costumes, helmets and environments are incredibly well done and deserve an Oscar nod. This won't be too surprising to those who've seen Tarsem's other works, though.

There isn't really a lot to be said about the film - there aren't any ambiguous loose ends
(although the end kind of sets up the potential for a sequel with his son, I guess)
and I don't feel like there's a lot to be debated story-wise. While it's not really like 300 in many ways (for one, the warriors have a much more believable/much less ridiculous physique) I think fans of 300 will also enjoy this: the fight scenes are great, there's a satisfying amount of visceral combat, the story's fine and it moves along at a good pace.

There is one transition like that in Immortals that's pretty cool:
it's a decapitated head that transitions into a boat
but it's not as cool as that one in The Fall.

It's not at all like Clash of the Titans when it comes to the action and maturity of the film IMO (and for one, it's not boring). The fight scene in the above video is, indeed, abridged by the way. Whether or not you'll like the editing in the final film is something I can't really answer, though (personally, it didn't bug me even in 3D).
