In a way, it is wrong to say Batman is a non-superpowered hero

I think he'd be a more compelling character if he was less capable in a fist fight. I don't want him to be a wimp or anything, but he would be cooler if he used the gadgets and stealth to avoid fist fights due to the fact that he's a rich nerd... but instead he's a rich, handsome, genius whose a martial arts master to boot.

That's how I view Batman as well.

For me, the appeal of a "normal dude who hangs along with superpowered heroes" loses his appeal when he can trample on them. He's pretty much invincible.

Nah, there's not much better than Batman breaking a dude's fucking jaw with a right hook.

See but he can't "trample" them. It was one story and prep time is a farce. Any of the JL could take him out in a few seconds.

The only time he was actually stopped was with Zatanna. So far he seems untouchable.

I really liked that story. Batman sees himself as humanity's true champion and he's not wrong.

He's not wrong that JL really need some sort of takedown countermeasure.

He is wrong in that he has this air of arrogance going around and he pretty much says JL is the one who will stop him should he go rogue... but then he knows how to stop them so...

Then again Babel is shit and JL Doom only managed to make the story tolerable.

He's right in that all the other heroes aren't or are no longer human and thus are more likely than him to reach a point where their interests diverge from humanity's.

Yeah but then that's assuming Superman is Superman and not Clark Kent, etc. It's ignoring that Batman himself suffers from paranoia.

Again. They only "fought" in one story. Almost anyone in the JL would take him out in seconds. It's just common sense.

Hopefully that's the case.

The best superpower is hardline fascism. Creep.

In the end, it's the application of "super" that throws things out of whack. Is it a question of semantics? In my eyes, Dredd, Batman, Iron Man etc. are not superheroes, just heroes.

Although, Dredd is more an ideological allegory for a number of things. But that's what makes him fucking awesome. Best comic "hero" ever.

Another comicbook thread!!! GAF is fast becoming one of my favorite forums comics, all day everyday(not being sarcastic)

On Topic

Well some time back....a really long time ago actually Marvel and DCs heroes were split into tiers and the prominant tiers were:

Street Level - Heroes who werent "very" Super and were seen cleaning up the streets of villains not big enough to truly be a city, country or worldwide threat their comics usually only cover a small area of town.
  • Batman
  • The Punisher
  • Luke Cage to a certain extent
  • DareDevil
  • NightWing
  • Wolverine - arguably
  • Taskmaster
  • Deadpool
  • Iron Fist
  • Spider-man
  • Moon Knight[
  • Elektra

Super Level - Heroes who either have superpowers or technology that gets them to a level where they clean up city to countrywide threat level villains....every now and then even worldwide threat level.
  • Superman when he isnt exerting himself
  • Ironman
  • Hulk
  • Spider-man - Ends of the earth and a number of other feats put him in Super at times
  • Ms. Marvel
  • Thor
  • Wonder Woman

Cosmic Level - These Heroes might flirt with earth but really they focus more on galactic level villains and the scale and scope of their universes usually is much larger than simply worrying about Earth.

  • Full blown Superman
  • The Silver Surfer
  • The Green Lantern
  • Nova
  • Black Bolt
  • Spawn
  • Captain Atom
  • Thor
  • Ion
  • Gladiator

I didnt list every hero just a small selection to give you an idea.....but basically we might call all these guys SuperHeros not because they are Super powered, but because their actions go beyond that of the average hero(police officers, firefighters, doctors etc etc) the actions of a super hero are Super Heroic.....so even someone without superpowers can be called a super hero if their actions show it to be true.

Batman is a Superhero....however he has no Super powers so yes you could call him a non-superpowered Hero....but thats a little long winded dont you tink

Honestly, considering the universe he occupies, and the intellect he supposedly has, I don't see how Batman can not have a super powered suit. I mean, hey it doesn't need to be Iron Man, but what about enhanced muscles, gecko-like sticking abilities to gloves and boots (climb walls with ease!), super powered batarangs etc. Him having to be some magical martial artist is dumb.

This is one of many reasons why Terry is superior.

He can only fuck Black Widow.
Batman would fuck all the Avengers by himself.

He's just trying to give the villains a chance.

No, sorry. He's not super powered.

True. Batman was originally conceived as a detective, not a superhero:

But over the years he has been elevated to a superhero like status, I suppose.

Superman on the other hand, was conceived to be a Superhero and was marketed under the "action" brand originally:

Also interestingly, Superman's powers became so over the top in later iterations too. Superman couldn't even fly in the original comics, instead he just leaped very long distances.

It was the Fleischers who made Superman fly so they wouldn't have to animate him leaping all the time.I have to find my dvd.

He dresses up in a bat outfit he's complicated!

He used to freakin kill people...he's mellowed out I guess.

Also, I've never understood the I don't kill thing, when he's going around giving minions brain damage from super kicks to the face. Maybe he just doesn't kill the really bad guys.

Iron Man went nearly toe-to-toe with Thor in the Avengers movie. Even getting whacked a few times by Thor's hammer. I'd like to see Batman survive that.

I'm a big time comic back (spend about 30-50$ a month of them), but I can't really stand Super god level heroes. There is never a real feel of danger or threat. I did like that Planet Hulk run when he became a gladiator, because he was getting fucked up all the time. Even I even sub to that new batman series; i think we are up to issues 9 but i have yet to read past issue 3 because I'm incredibly annoyed at how everything is staged, how batman always had some random-ass gadget to save him, etc etc.

Wolverine is definitely super-powered wtf, he has crazy regenerative abilities...The X-men are all super-mutants.

That was just for the movie, Thor beat the crap out of him quite easily in the comics.

lets be honest
batman should be irrelevant and nobody would want him on their "superhero teamup"

the only reason he shows up everywhere is because hes popular
the fanboys demand him
lots of fans = lots of money

superman, the hulk, thor, etc etc just don't need a normal human in a bat costume
popular = why hes written to be relevant in these comic universes

That and Batman pays for a lot of the JLA shit.

Batman is just a ninja with a billion bucks.

he's the only DC character with bad ass villains.

Batman doesn't have "powers" but he may as well be genetically superpowered.
Dude is built like an 18-wheeler, is smarter than Einstein, and more handsome than Sean Connery.
