Firmware updates come out on Wednesday mornings around 1am EST IIRC. At least, the last two did. PEACE.Linkzg said:I am guessing it will be out Thursday. At least it should be on Thursday so if they fuck up they have time to fix it before MGS4 launches.

Panajev2001a said:See, say that the FW update were ready for this Wednesday... if they had a facility for FW updates background downloading (Steam like pre-loading) they could release it on Wednesday and require it for PSN sign-in by Thursday or Friday when they would also sync up the PSN Store and PSN sing-in procedures requiring the newly released FW.
It would help people to hide the time it takes them to download the FW updates which is time well spent (PS3 FW updates have been kicking ASS, keep up the good job SCE!) is still time taken away from playing games.

keyrat said:If it's that big a problem, you could try the following: boot up your ps3, avoid the update, play the hell out of your game until you absolutely need to take a break. now, instead of shutting off how you normally would, quit back to the xmb and put the update to download.

Zoe said:I can see how the automatic downloading could be useful, but would Sony really want a feature that would admit that people leave their consoles idle for long periods of time? It works for a PC because those are multitasking machines, but you're supposed to be using the PS3 to play games or movies.
I'd love to get it that soon. It'll help ease the disappointment of the inevitable shitty PS Store update for the third week in a row.Linkzg said:I am guessing it will be out Thursday. At least it should be on Thursday so if they fuck up they have time to fix it before MGS4 launches.
Panajev2001a said:Theoretically a FW update background download function could work just like regular PSN Store background download work: with the same limitations and advantages that you already experience with PSN Store background downloading.
Zoe said:Yes, but downloads from the Store are initiated by the user, and the user accepts those limitations and advantages when the download starts.
Aginor said:Wow ! moaning about having to update firmware :lol
Simple solution ,
Turn on PS3 start update ,
Go for a shit
Make a brew
Make a phone call
Tidy up
Clean PS3
Or any other menial task you choose not to do on a daily basis then bobs your uncl firmware updated everybody happy .
Integra said:hmmm. this is interesting news indeed. I'll have to keep an eye out for it. someone already posted a youtube video on the in-game xmb menu.

There's plenty of contention in user/tech circles over just how painless and beneficial automatic updates are to users. Might seem all well and good to eliminate the "pain" of a few extra clicks required to actively initiate an update...until you're at the losing end of an update gone awry, due to a feature or features being removed or changed that you liked in their previous state or due to bugs introduced inadvertently.Panajev2001a said:I am saying that making a process the least painful for users as possible without any extra user intervention/decision required makes the most sense (business wise too) or an evolving product which gets new features and optimizations over time.
Why do you think Windows and (Mac and Linux distributions IIRC) allow for automatic updates?

"Least painful" is a real matter of perspective, Pana. Least painful to some is not walking into an update blindly and getting caught off guard by the changes introduced.

Thats what I think they are going to do. They reinstated rumble with a minor update that was preloaded on Ratchet and Clank, it seem very likely they will do it again.msdstc said:seriously :lol :lol :lol . 3 hours!? what the hell kind of connection does he have?
Oh and by the way, if it really does come with MGS4 you won't have to download it, you can just install it directly from the disc.
GeoramA said:I'd love to get it that soon. It'll help ease the disappointment of the inevitable shitty PS Store update for the third week in a row.
You wink, Pana, like this isn't a major hole in your argument. Think about it. If it were strictly a question of software engineering, the console manufacturers would have already done it by now.Panajev2001a said:Also, consoles FW wise, not updating the FW is not an option any of the three console manufacturers really wants to give users.
This is overwrought rhetoric. There isn't a lack of choice in the current state.I am all for giving people choice.

Kagari said:A highly reliable source told me to expect it on the 18th... which is a Wednesday, which would be in line with previous updates. Also, expect it to be about a 100MB download size.
