Inspired by Drinky's troll thread. The thread is simple enough, post PC games that can be downloaded for free and are really fun.

Cave Story

Cave Story is a 2D platformer with an interesting story. It is sort of a combination of Mario/Metroid/Megaman. There are many weapons with different uses, and the game can get pretty tough. It is one of the best 2D platformers in years. Although keyboard controls work fine, it is best to use a PS/USB adapter.

rRootage

rRootage is a shmup that is boss battle after boss battle after boss battle. There are four different modes of play. Each mode has a different twist. The most noteable mode is an imitation of Ikaruga. This game is tough and is a great challenge.

Both games should run on nearly every type of computer. System specs should not be a problem.

I killed a young woman, want me to show you how I did it?

Downloaded Maple Story yesterday, and thought it was a cool game (dont understand why everyone hates it so much). Its free and a pretty nice and simple MMORPG.

In the golf game, how do I move to my ball quickly? I run like molasses and it takes forever to get to my ball. :|

Star Control 2 is a masterpiece. It is my favorite game of all time, with an excellent story that doesn't hold your hand, memorable alien characters, very well-written dialogue, great exploration, fun combat with a "Super Melee" mode that could have been sold as its own game, and more. I owned the DOS version long before it was free. A few years ago, the developers released the source code for the 3DO version to the public domain, and it was ported to modern platforms with their permission.

Tyrian 2000 is a very solid shmup. Lots of weapons and levels, fast-paced, action great music and fairly good graphics. There's a ridiculous amount of secrets and content in this game - secret levels, 3 secret difficulty options, secret ships, a secret minigame, you name it. Like Star Control 2, it's been released as freeware by the creator.

Warning Forever is a fairly original and rather fun action game. Like rRootage, it consists of fighting and defeating a boss repeatedly until the time limit runs out, with the boss growing stronger each time. What really makes the game interesting is that the boss evolves depending on how you fight it. For example, if you usually hit it from the front, it'll mainly grow there. Or if a certain weapon is more effective against you, more will be added. The action gets insane in later stages. Warning Forever was developed to be freeware right from the start.

possibly greatest game ever, regardless of medium or cost.

Gunbound is AWESOME if you have friends who play it. The overall community is usually terrible though.

Wholeheartedly agree with the choices for Cave Story, Warning Forever, and Star Control 2.

For those who want everything that CS has to offer, you can download the "Cave Story Deluxe Package" here: http://www.gameflaws.com/cavestory/. It has both PC and Mac versions, the English patch, a level editor, and a music player.

For those of you who like puzzle games, Cliff Johnson has made his first three games available for free on his website: http://www.thefoolsgold.com/downloads/index.htm. The Fool's Errand is by far and away the best of the three. 3 in Three is also worth playing, but be warned, it's much harder than TFE.

The Fool's Errand (Mac version - yes, it's black & white, it's that old):

This is the Sun's Map. As you complete each puzzle in the main story, another piece of the map appears. When you have all the pieces, you need to rearrange them in the proper sequence, creating yet another puzzle that involves assembling clues from all the puzzles and story bits you've already solved. It's awesome.

TFE has some traditional puzzles like mazes, anagrams, word searches, etc., but it also has puzzles like this card game - you are not told what the rules are, nor are you told what each card means, but you have to beat your opponent.

And then there's 3 in Three. The puzzles are more logic based, and in many cases, very challenging.

Ragdoll Masters
Technically it's not free, it's shareware. But it's hella fun and addictive. You control the dudes head...area and spin around using the laws of weird physics to smack your opponents around. Equal parts skill and luck I reckon. You can throw you own soundtrack in if you want to.

Haha, Tyrian is freeware? Man I used to love that game, but I never bothered to purchase the full version.

And thanks to you now I'm playing one of the promising game on PSP this year on my PC. :)

Yay! I'm glad to be helpful, since I'm really addicted to Every Extend. :) Spread the word!

Where the bloody hell is the actual download link for Every Extend? I keep clicking on things that take me in circles... or is that part of the game? :)

Also, the classic RPG Ultima IV was released as freeware some years back to promote the release of Ultima IX. Sourceforge has adopted it and has retooled it with VGA graphics. Right here:

http://xu4.sourceforge.net/

Don't know if it's ok to hotlink here :S
Either this or this

You can go to the page Jiguryo gave us and

The Babylon Project

It's based off of the Freespace 2 engine, which was supposedly made abandonware a couple years back. There's a big community around an open source version of the engine, with which people are introducing all sorts of new effects that were never in the original Freespace 2 game, such as environment mapping, visible weapons hardpoints, etc.

Awesome thread, really ace.

Well, since no one added it so far, my vote goes to Every Extend -- y'know, the one Q Entertainment's adapting to the PSP.

http://nagoya.cool.ne.jp/o_mega/product/e2.html

Edit: Thanks to this thread, I just found out there is a new version of it for the PC! w00t.

A little off topic maybe, but certainly worth mentioning. If you have the ability to play homebrew on your DS you can play the somewhat cleverly titled port Every ExteNDS.

To be fair all those and more have also been added to Freespace 2, including higher polygon models, higher quality textures, lightmaps etc. through the Freespace 2 Source Code Project.

Also, IIRC, GTA 2 is now also free, and it's an awesome game to play in multiplayer.

Beneath a Steel Sky - I have very fond memories of that game, I still keep my PC copy of it.. black box, comic book, 7 floppies :)

Most people never realized that this is actually a Judge Dredd adventure.. It had a brilliant plot, incredible atmosphere and the ending was just wow. I think Flight of the Amazon Queen was by the same studio, as was Prisoner of Ice, no? They also made Lure of the Temptress which was all kinds of excellent. Revolution Games? My memory fails me..

Stay Vigilant!

Beneath a Steel Sky was made by Revolution Studios and Flight of The Amazon Queen was made by Interactive Binary Illusions.

Also, Lure of The Temptress is available here.

Also, while we are on an adventure tract, here are two fan-made remakes of King's Quest I and II, THIS is the way all remakes should be handled.
