In your opinion, what is the definitive World War 2 game?

Pretty much this. Jeez guys.
I would have mentioned it if I didn't like Combat Mission more. And the lack of anyone else mentioning that series along with the lack of HoI love is also saddening.

I cant say which I found to be the best but I do agree BF1942 was the best WWII MP ever. All in all tho the WWII FPS genre needs to be retired
I'd kill for a string of quality AAA Nam games.

Well I came into the thread to mention Combat Mission but saw you already posted it. Love that series. I kind of want to try Hearts of Iron but it looks pretty intimidating.

'World War 2' is not a genre.. the nerdiest most realistic game is Hearts of Iron II / III. Company of Heroes is good. I loved Call of Duty (first one + United Offensive) as a cinematic WW2 shooter, it blew away the other FPS's competing with it.

I think the only ones worth giving a damn credit to are the Hearts of Iron series and possibly Company of Heroes or Combat Mission. These are the only ones that allow you to play the opposite side of the spectrum; BF1942 does and I love it dearly but it's by no means a realistic portrayal of the World War II era.

The usual suspects of other assorted FPS are lame. You're always playing as part of an Allied outfit and there never seems to be a moment where these pathetic games shove some sort of "Germany/Japan = evil soldiers" propaganda in your face. Yes there is a lot of tainted history surrounding these nations back then, but at the same time people are forgetting that the other soldiers you are killing mercilessly are practically the same as the player's avatar.

I'd kill to see a game that can replicate the feelings a Japanese soldier might go through whilst crashing through the Pacific with ease, or the desperate situations a German soldier would go through at the Battle of the Bulge or even at the fall of Berlin. I think it would be unnervingly awesome to play a small mission in the eyes of a kamikaze pilot - what do these kids go through, mentally, at the beginning through to the end?

From a strategic perspective, yes. On a tactical scale, the Combat Mission series is king.

Hearts of Iron 2 and 3.

Simple. Everything else is just bullcrap.
Quit overlooking Combat Mission! :(

Yep, Company of Heroes. Men of War is close but tough to get people into due to quite the learning curve.
This is a horrible post. MOW is way easier to learn than COH. Don't hold the additional depth against it!

Make it stop though. There has GOT to be something better than revisiting WWII. Again. Someone make the definitive Cold War game. Shoot, someone make the definitive Civil War game.

Blitzkrieg
Codename: Panzers
The Commandos series was great pulp fun

Agreed.

The Sid Meier Civil War games are pretty fun.

As for a definitive Cold War game, there's one available in boardgame land:

Civil War eh? It's the same reason why almost no developer made a WW1 game, it would be utterly boring. Though I can see good reasons for some fine Cold War games.

FPS?

MOH:AA + Call of Duty (the original one) I would give the edge to Call of Duty if I had to pick one, it improved on so many things. The subsequent WW2 COD games didn't add much.

RTS?

Company of Heroes

Flight Sim?

IL2 Sturmovik (series)

Multiplayer?

Battlefield 1942
XWW2 was a great realism mod as was Forgotten Hope which added tons of content and realism.

Honorable Mention to:

Hidden and Dangerous 2
Commandos 1 + 2

After playing Halo and Modern Warfare, I can't go back to guns that don't work well.

Call of Duty and Company of Heroes... both were fresh interpretations of the conflict for the medium at the time, and each redefined expectations in their genres upon release. CoH in particular made WWII interesting for me again after all the CoD imitators and sequels.

Medal of Honor Frontline will always stick out for me. That opening battle on the beaches of Normandy... I played that sooooo many times.

Frontline was just a watered down version of Allied Assault. You missed out :D

+1 for Medal of Honor: Allied Assault and The Hidden&Dangerous, although I never made it that far in the latter. :lol

Red Orchestra and Brothers In Arms. I liked RO for it's realism and I liked BiA because it wasn't Action Hero like CoD and switched up from being "Let's storm the beaches again!"

The best ones IMO:
Company of Heroes
Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory
Combat Mission
Close Combat
Commandos
Hidden & Dangerous 2

I had so much fun with these games/series :D

3-way tie in a WWII-shaped place in my heart:

1) Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe. A remake, I need it.

2) Also, for sheer hours put into a WWII game, B-17 Bomber Flying Fortress. Always felt bad when the crew members named after my friends died.

3) Finally, for being the first WWII game I played, B-17 Bomber with Intellivoice. It TALKED.

I hate WWII games.

That said, CoD2 is not only the best one every made, but one of my favorite games of all time.

So that's saying a lot.

Too bad your guns couldn't hit anything.

CoD2 was a consolized version of CoD1. Tiny maps, press to throw grenades and rechargeable health.

The shotty was freakin' fun, though.

I still love WW2 era games. Medal of Honor Allied Assault and its Spearhead expansion I think are the best WW2 games you can play.

Hell yeah, 2015 made MoHAA and half the expansion SH till whatever happened between them and EA... Then about two dozen of those devs left 2015 to form IW and created CoD!

The story-telling was fantastic, the action was intense, and the gameplay changes made for a tighter game.

It was amazing.
