In your opinion, which console/handheld has the best UI?

I've got small problems with all of their usability but the first time I turned on a PS3 set to 1080p the XMB was just beautiful to look at.

Xbox 360 dashboard before the metro one. Not the blades, the second one. If all you wanted to do was view your own content, you wouldn't see an ad at all.

BPM is a big contender imo (when it gets out of beta)

Always been a fan of the PS3 UI though it could be a bit laggy at times from what I remember.

I'm enjoying the 3DS UI as well too.

The first xbox 360 dashboard i love it!

The old blades were so much better than everything after it. Ever since NXE I've found the 360's UI to be very bloated, fast, but bloated.

XMB is definitely my choice. Like char0n said, it's simple, elegant, and functional. My only issue is that it can be sluggish at times (when a game is running, mainly).

XMB. Could use some better sorting options, but overall I like the minimalist look and it's relatively easy to find stuff.

360 dashboard is way too cluttered for my liking. Tonnes of ads for stuff I don't care about, and it often takes me far longer than it should to find stuff.

Never been a fan of the Wii Channels, it works much better on the 3DS though.

Wii

Fast to start, point and press A to select stuff

PS3 and 360 are OK once your used to them but are terrible to new comers.

If Big Picture Mode counts, Big Picture Mode. It's going to be great once the kinks are worked out.

If it doesn't, I guess I'd go with the 360 for functionality (in spite of the awful Metro waste of space and the inescapable ads) and PS3 for aesthetics.

I do think it's easy to get to where you need to get with XMB (at least easier than 360) but eventually with tons of media/games/apps both 360 and ps3 is going to have to implement a much better search function. As it stands the streaming of music and video to the console is handled much better with something like Apple TV and the way that sony implemented in game XMB is very inefficient and clunky.

I can't believe people are saying XMB. It's sluggish and riddled with redundancies. If you have a lot of media or games stored on the HDD, it's a chore to get to it all. Ah, well...to each his own. I will say, though, that it worked well on the PSP.

I'll echo a few others and cast my vote for the 360 blade UI...circa 2006-08.

I've taken a real shine to the Vita UI mostly because of how easily it can be customised, being able to set custom backgrounds for each screen and organise the icons however I want. Just behind that I'd put the XMB because it is clean, simple and well organised.

Special mention to the old 360 Blades as well, the 360 UI has continued to go downhill since they were replaced.

I've got about 250GB of data stored, and it's not a chore if you organize your stuff into different folders.

In terms of features, definitely the 360's (specifically social features, such as the rich profiles, cross-game voice chat and game invites).

In terms of slickness and aesthetics, I'd say the XMB. But unfortunately, over time, it became too 'big' and too inconsistent. Also, it lacks a lot of important features.

I'm a huge Nintendo fan but I think GUI design is something they absolutely suck at.

Judging the stuff they've shown of Miiverse and TVii though, I'm hoping thats indicative of improvements.

BPM is really promising. Has some kinks to work out but it's still great.

The XMB is shitty and I cannot stand it on the PS3. On the PSP it's a little better, but I have yet to see a portable UI that trumps anything iOS 5+

As for consoles, I actually like the current 360 dash. Without the ads of course.

XMB's design is great. Clean and simple.

BPM is nice as well.

Vita's bubbles are okay-ish for a touch interface... but I'd love to see the XMB again, especially now that they added button controls for the OS.

Here are some Big Picture mode shots. You can browse every part of it with M/KB or with a controller.
I was really surprised how polished it was when I first booted it up.

Not shown is the really great Web Browser.

XB360's dashboard was great before they overcomplicated certain simple things.

PS3's XMB is my favourite, however, can be painfully slow to show up during navigation within gameplay. I wish there was a secondary XMB while in game, all streamlined.

The autocorrect is fantastic too. I was happy to see that in the update.

The main functionality I want from a console UI is fast access to my library of games and media.

In that regard, the PS3 trumps all. The simple grouping of games under PS3/PS2/PS1/Minis/NeoGeo and listing them in recently played order means the games I want are literally a button press or two away. Accessing the store is quick (even if the store UI has a lot of issues)

The Wii is in second place, only trailing the PS3 due to the sluggishness of accessing games hidden in the SD Channel. Again, access to the store is fast.

Rank last is the 360's abomination. It only exists to show you ads and shove the Live branding down your throat at every opportunity. I hate it, and its gotten worse with each redesign. So many button presses required to do anything. Finding games in the store is a chore. Horrible.

For handhelds, there's not much between the Vita and 3DS. Both work well for the most part. The Vita is fine, especially now you can use both controls and touchscreen. I'm not a fan of the odd number of bubble per screen, and it desperately need folders.

The 3DS has improved greatly with folders, but it still has an inconstancy with what screens let you use controls and some that force you to use touch. But as for fast access to game, it works perfectly.

I definitely agree. It's one of the worst things about it, together with the limitations on how you can organize your data in the folders, and the fact it stops downloading when watching a movie.
