Inappropriate gamer tags.

Not too long ago I was banned from PSN for an inappropriate username. I lost all of my trophies, online progress and PSN purchases for breaching the TOS. My username was "ThunderKak".

To me, this is not an offensive name. I called Sony and the girl I was on the phone with laughed and said she found it funny, not offensive. She told me there was nothing she could do about it, not even let me change my username so I had to talk to a manager. After getting him to allow me to change my name I had to beg for him to allow me to keep my PSN purchases. Thankfully I was able to salvage them but I still lost my trophies and online progress.

Where should they draw the line between offensive and non offensive names? I see names like charlesmanson***, ***TedBundy, DirtyDik*** ect ect all the time. Serial killers are more offensive to me than ThunderKak!

Maybe I am ignorant and my name was offensive but I really don't think it was. A lot of work I put into some games all gone. I don't even really care for trophies anymore, I can't go back and get them all over again.

Am I in the wrong here for being kinda miffed about the whole situation? What do you think? Was it my fault for breaching the TOS or are they being a bit harsh here?

Edit: and my friends list was wiped.

They just straight banned you without giving you a chance to change it? That seems pretty shitty since MS on 360 used to give people multiple chances to change their offensive gamertags before being permanently banned.

Yup. I went to log in and it said I was banned and to contact Sony.

Well Microsoft has a method to let people change their name built into their service. Sony on the other hand is Japanese.

no you are not in the wrong you have every right to be pissed off

xbl handles it the same way you just described. they force you to change your username if its offensive

deleting accounts is ridicilous and shows how incompetent sony is with their network

I report offensive usernames if and only if they are crappy teammates or otherwise act like dicks in game. Otherwise it's live and let live. But c'mon man, use some common sense. Your name was a bad idea, bottom line. Should have kept it family friendly. I'm sure sooner or later the usernames you're seeing will get theirs anyway, so it's silly to point at them and go "but but they're worse!" It's a little bizarre that they nuke all your achievements and game progress. I think on Xbox you keep that stuff, get a forced name change, and only get nuked completely if you repeatedly violate the name guidelines. Seems like one warning should be enough. Zero warnings is too little.

Do you lose all your PSN purchased content as well when you get banned? If so then I'd think that would suck more than losing trophies.

EDIT: nvm didn't see that line about getting the PSN stuff back. Well at least it wasn't a total loss, still suck I imagine though ; ;

How did you invent your username? Where did you get the Kak from?
Truthfully I asked my girlfriend what I should make my name and she said thunder cock and we laughed and i was like i cant do that and made it thunderkak.
Its thunderkak not thundercock, it doesnt even sound the same lol

What infuriates me about this is that they denied you your purchases. Even though you eventually got them back, I would like to see what would happen if this was challenged in a court of law. I would like some precedent for consumer rights for my downloadable purchases.

I always thought the service was there but only in Japan.
It must be possible or the OP wouldn't have kept his purchase history with the name change.

It's so silly that they don't create a customer facing method to do it. Get some of that easy money from teenagers that put the latest shitty meme in their name by updating a few records in a db.

Yup. How this has not happened yet with any of the digital services is crazy to me. A friend of mine lost his entire Steam library 6 years ago because he purchased stuff from a different region than his Credit card was from.

Ya i guess it was a bad idea. I still would have liked a warning and the option to change my name and keep my shit.

I'm surprised they don't give the option like MS do.

Someone on my friends list actually sent a message to everyone on his list to report his gamertag offensive so he could get a free change and it worked.

Brilliant idea.

Seems pretty obvious that it's just a 'leet' spelling of ThunderCock... I mean c'mon man. Doesn't sound like he's denying he knew what he as doing. It probably just sounded really cool when he was younger...

Maybe that's why then. I was thinking more because it sounded like "c*ck" maybe?
I think it may have been the Kak = shit .. it was in KZSF that the ban came from and i think Kak = shit in dutch.

ThunderKak does not seem at all offensive. Oh and TIL Sony can delete accounts if your name is even the slightest offensive to....someone. Quite worried about mine now.

The kind of people that switch clans and stuff a lot must be a huge source of 100% profit for Microsoft.

I feel they hit a sweet spot with the cost where people do change names but most stick with their choice. I don't think it'd be the same if changing names was free. I have to nickname every single person on Steam and Skype etc to know who's who because they keep changing to random shit.

My good buddy got banned of xbox live for the GT Silkybeastnutts. It wasn't perma ban but they made him change it to something else. I see where it could be inappropriate but it was funny and who would really be offended by that name any ways.

So if my name was SheetFace should I get banned? Its not offensive if im not saying shit face even tho its obvious that what i meant. I tried to keep it PG.

can we start a twitter campaign to allow PSN ID changes?

Has Sony ever given a reason why we can't change our ID's?
Yeah: They've (Shu) have said their network infrastructure sucks and we have to live with the choices that were made many years ago.

Should you get banned? That's a bit philosophical. Should you expect to be banned? Probably. Actually with that one you got two really bad interpretations. Shit Face, and Someone that wears a 'sheet' on their face. Like the KKK.

LookAtMeGo seems like it would have been a pretty nice PSN name. And if that was taken should have just kept adding Os to the end until you got one or PSN said your name was too long! :)

well that sucks, they somehow changed OP's name for him didn't they?

Guess I'll just wait til my PSN gets banned and then argue until they let me change it

You can change your name, its just going to cost you your friends list, trophies and any game progress. You can keep your PSN purchases tho.....

ok cool, don't care about friends or trophies at all

Is it you, OP?

"Kak" is a universal euphemism for either "shit" or "cock". Did you really not anticipate offending anyone with your choice? Seems either naive or willfully ignorant of the potential consequences to me. I would not report you, but there are any number of people who would (and did).

Ya thats what it is now. I learned my lesson, I just wish it was a little less strict.

Meh, I'm sure with some planning they could convert the system to something better. Yes they'd have to rewrite a lot of code but pretending that it's plain not possible is just silly.
