Indecipherable GT metric irrefutably proves that the WiiU has bigger numbers than PS4

• WOW! Would you look at that! Nintendo's Wii U has made the full comeback and taken over the top slot in the console war – surpassing Sony's PlayStation 4 with 79 overall points on the GDEX this week. This is likely due to social chatter from fans of opposing consoles that are clogging the airwaves with negative sentiment regarding their preferred platform's primary competition. In other words – FANBOYS BE TALKIN' SMACK!!! While Microsoft and Sony fans duke it out in a war of words, Nintendo's Wii U has slid into the top spot, likely surprising the Big N itself as we ramp up towards the release of the Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

You know their data tracking service is accurate and reliable when they spice up their reports with ghetto slang and nicknames. Fanboys be talkin' smack? The Big N? CLASSIC. It's the resonance with the common man that just adds an extra little something to their validity. NPD's monthly reports and decades-old databases? BORRRING. Famitsu's f-ism Piccolo retail snapshot service? TOTALLY OLD SCHOOL.

I propose we use GDEX as the gold standard of future sales tracking! As the thread title clearly shows, Wii U will dominate over Sony's PS4. It may be dead worldwide now, but GDEX shows it's on the rise! Wii U will LIVE ONCE AGAIN guys! It will WIN THIS console war! After all, questionable "proprietary" algorithms and nebulous data sources don't lie!

Screw NPD's 25,000+ store point-of-sale USA retail tracking system! Screw GfK Chart-Track's international network! Screw Enterbrain's and ASCII Media Works's Japanese sales tracking services! Gametrailers's GDEX is clearly the future of video game sales tracking!

I don't see the cause for so many histrionic reactions. It's a fairly harmless measurement of social media mentions, and doesn't really pretend to be anything more in the write-up. There certainly is no pretense to have any relation to sales. It is a little interesting to see that mentions of the Wii U went up recently, whether in positive or negative contexts, and companies watch this kind of social media aggregation more than you think.

It's a comical, minor, and somewhat perplexing blip in social media. I'd have expected only lighthearted speculation here over what might have spurred so many people to mention the system online recently.

Guys, I think this is just measuring social media and forum discussion activity.

Thus, it would kind of make sense for Wii U to be in the lead because, you know, it actually has games out for it?

This is weird considering Game Trailers and their community constantly tout the dogma that WiiU is not in fact next gen.

Nope, it only measures comments made on Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, and Google+.

Comments get influenced by how many likes, upvotes, retweets, etc., the comments get, and also "what the sentiment of the comment is."

"Positive" comments increase the score, while "negative" comments decrease it.

It's harmful for three reasons:

1) It's founded on nebulous, esoteric data from only 5 sites across the web. Imagine all of the false positives, garbage data, inflated data, or potentially manipulated data this tracker could hold...the fundamentals behind this kind of tracking are so fuzzy that it's pointless to attempt such an endeavor.

2) The results are misleading due to questionable methods of data gathering and a lack of transparency. GDEX somehow "shows" that Wii U is being as talked about as PS4 or Xbox One across the Internet. What if that's completely untrue---after all, the Internet is bigger than just 5 social media websites. Why can't we have raw numbers of mentions? Why does it have to be formulated into a "point" system? Why can't we see the logic behind the point system? Why are there so many secrets?

3) It's self-important. The site goes around touting its "500 million analyzed comments per day!" statistic as if it has some kind of authority. Don't mind the fact that it only looks at comments from five websites, or the fact that it has no transparency in its sources. We can't in good faith look at the tracker and consider it as anything other than light-hearted and comical. If we try to take it seriously we run into too many problems that contradict its validity and usefulness.

Scrooged

Totally wronger about Nintendo's business decisions.
The reaction in this thread is hilarious. Everyone is so defensive.

More people talk about the Wii U. That's all this means.

Uh... what's the problem here? It's meant to be an accurate indicator of video game hardware and software discussion on social networks. I don't see why this is supposed to be hilarious.

People read what they wanna read. It is what you say, but apparently its enough to pass off as non PS4 praise around here so start pointing and laughing.

edit: Who the hell wrote this though? Christ

There are more sold Wii U's than PS4s

Actually, have the preorder numbers for PS4 passed Wii U sales?

Let's suppose that Wii U has shipped 3.8 million consoles to retailers and sold more than 3 million to consumers (these are estimates).

August 20th, 2013: PS4 preorders (consumers) are "more than 1 million worldwide," according to Sony
September 19th, 2013: Sony has announced that it expects to SHIP more than 5 million consoles to retailers by March 31st, 2014
October 8th, 2013: It's rumored through a few individuals with retailer / publisher connections that PS4 preorders (consumers) are more than 1.5 million now

...So no, PS4 numbers have not passed Wii U sales, but they might by next March if everything goes according to Sony's plan.

It's just so ridiculous, even for the games media.
