Independence Day: Resurgence Trailer 1

Regarding Wil Smith (from IMDb);
Will Smith was supposed to reprise the role of Captain Steven Hiller, but Fox refused to meet his request for a $50 million salary for two sequels. Roland Emmerich confirmed Smith was not be returning for the sequel in June 2013 to Daily News, but mentioned that Jeff Goldblum would return to reprise his role as David Levinson. Additionally, Maika Monroe replaced Mae Whitman as Patricia Whitmore. Whitman did not officially comment on the change, aside from a re-tweet of a HitFix article on her Twitter account titled "The case of the missing Mae Whitman and 'Independence Day 2'", implying she was never approached.

So yeah...I think he's out.

No way Will smith is completely out. Even the website says "unknown malfunction" when describing the events of his death. His Captain Barbosa-like epic return will be magnificent. And from that trailer alone there is no way we win this fight. Alien whoop ass all in here.

We will win. Goldblum will fork a version of iOS and upload it to the alien's computers, thus allowing him to execute a patched android apk that crashes their systems, thus causing the ship to crash.

Check out warof1996.com. It's a viral site for this movie. Captain Steven Hiller (Will Smith) died while test flying the first hybrid jet that humanity developed with the alien tech. He had the honor of testing it first since he was a hero of the war, but it blew up mid flight.

That is fucking LAME.

He's playing Randy Quaid's part from the first movie. You know at the end "Doesn't anyone have any missiles" but this time it's Will Smith "Sorry I'm late but you know I love to make an entrance"

I should write movies and stuff!

Liam Hemsworth? No, stop it Hollywood.
Unlike his older brother, Liam cannot act. I mean sure, he's few steps above Jai Courtney, but that's barely an accomplishment.
Keep the focus on Jeff Goldblum and we're golden.

I think Hollywood is basically treating him as a cheaper, younger Chris Hemsworth. He fits the hot quotient this type of movie needs without breaking the bank.

They are not even using missiles any more from the looks of it. It's all beamspams & shit now.

He better pray that face stays pretty.

That entire family seems blessed with great genes. He'll probably be bankable for a while and he's not offensively bad in movies that don't require a great deal of range. I doubt he'll be asked to do more in ID42 than look badass and stern.

How long before we get a Double Impact remake?

Or how long before we get Metal Gear Solid with Chris as Liquid, Liam as Solid, and Luke as Solidus?

I bet they offered it to Will Smith and he said "Yeah man but you have to make Jayden the President".

And Emerich did the Homer_T1000_hedge.gif move.

So if they were to redo the Randy Quaid sacrifice scene in the new film, what would the line be?

In the words of my generation, "#kthnxbye!"

That really does suck, Arnold's score for Stargate, ID4, and Godzilla '98 really gave those films character. Hopefully they adapt some of his themes in the new film.

Godzilla 98 has a totally underappreciated score: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3WLIDwxwsbU

Did Gareth Edwards Godzilla even have music? Whatever it was, it was totally forgettable.

Honestly I'm just interested in the premise: Aliens invade Earth but humans actually had the opportunity to prepare and adapt Alien technology.

.

99% of all invasion movies like this revolve around our society 'as-is' getting taken leading to an inevitable fight back.

Outside the fancy jets I wonder how much the advanced human tech across society and changes the invasion brought angle will be played up.

Independence Day is the only movie I've seen in theaters where the audience clapped at the end.

It happened to me in both Independence Day and Fellowship of the Ring

I think it's fair to describe Independence Day as one of the penultimate 90's movies, in a similar vein as Jurassic Park. Both movies have their flaws that any critic could pick into a million pieces and scrutinize every one. But nobody cares, because no matter what any Gen Y'er from the early 90's might think about those movies now, you can't help but love them and look back on them fondly.

If I were the scriptwriter for this movie and was looking for a single epic line that sums up the film and why you should go see it, I would have made it this one:

"20 long years after the War, and our technology has improved dramatically since then....Sadly, do did theirs."

ID4 gets shit on for numerous reasons, but it's the prototype for modern action blockbuster movies in pretty much every way - spectacle, marketing, etc. It's a pastiche of similar movies/literature in the genre, but it does what it does incredibly well.

It also came out at the right time for sci-fi and aliens-based media in general, as the mid-90s were all about stuff like that. I was a kid and was totally blown away by ID4 when it was released. Hell, I even read the novelisation and bought that Independence Day UK audiobook.

All this talk still just has me waiting for that Stargate reboot he's tackling afterward. I will never not hate that he's throwing the 15 years of MGM TV seasons under the bus, but after seeing this trailer I'm briefly reconsidering my previously-assumed belief that there was no way more Emmerich-helmed Stargate would be decent. Now I'm not so sure. Now I could see it being watchable.

Damn fine job you're doing, ID4: Resurgence marketing department. You've got me saying some pretty heavy stuff over here.

Uuuh, this may be the wrong thread to write this, but while Jurassic Park and Independence Day are both summer blockbusters, the similarities end there. JP is a far, far stronger film directed by a far, far better filmmaker. Tells a pretty beautiful cautionary tale about the desire for power and eagerness to commercialize against a stunning, dramatic backdrop. Not to mention it's structured perfectly, with tension building and releasing fantastically. You really can't pick apart and scrutinize JP. It's a brilliant film, blockbuster or not.

ID4 is a film where they destroy the primary antagonist by uploading a computer virus via a macbook while the POTUS shoots at them in a fighter jet. It's.... not very good and survives by a few cool scenes, one hell of an iconic speech, nostalgia and a large dose of patriotism. By all means, enjoy it and remember it fondly, but let's not pretend it's a great movie by any means.

I feel so out of tune with society because I think everyone loves this for its cheesiness but I love it for it's serious moments.

The moment of the President suggesting that we could learn from each other, and the alien basically saying "No" was always gut wrenching to me.

So reading up about it, ID4's gone full-Avatar and has 3 sequels (including this one) planned.

I still maintain they're protesting too much about Captain Hiller. He'll be back, just maybe not in this one. I mean, shit - if Brent Spiner can be in it...

Putting that aside, having watched the trailer again it does look legit awesome.

I don't know. I just read that the viral site has him dead back in 2007 from a flight test of that hybrid craft they're using here, plus his son is in the movie or something.

Ugh I don't think I'll be able to watch that movie. I loved Independence Day in all it's bombastic, cheesy 90ies glory (and as a teenager), but I feel that I couldn't even enjoy this tongue-in-cheek because the movie seems to take itself way too serious.

Unless the alien tech fused with his body and he becomes the first half human half alien robot hybrid

And he was being hidden at Area 53 the whole time

Yeah, not gonna lie. I kinda thought similarly for a moment. It's Emmerich.

...yeah, okay, totally still happening further on.

It does state "unknown cause" though, which is pretty suspect.

Captured by aliens using teleportation tech, a cover-up because he went AWOL (the government wanted to protect their vision of their hero - Harvey Dent-style), a cover-up to allow him to go on a super secret mission...

It's pretty easy to explain away his "death".

Cool.

I mean, I'm down for it. And there's also that post above yours about how it can be as bonkers as it wants to be, given the tone of the franchise.

I do hope if he does return it's an terrestrial-based explanation. I prefer the idea of him being the ultimate representation of badass humanity, rather than any alien collaboration or hybrid or something.

If he isn't in Resurgence then I'd still like them somewhere to have a line like, "The truth? The truth is we don't know where he is, but he sure as hell didn't die in that crash" or something like that.

The cast is there but man, it really doesn't look like an ID4 sequel at all to me. Seems like Emmerich latched onto the modern blockbuster style much too strongly, which makes for a pretty rough transition from a single film made 20 years ago. I'm sure it will be entertaining enough though (but no Will Smith stings :().

On a side note, the same species coming back never made much sense. It's a race of resource harvesters. It seems highly unlikely they'd be fueled be vengeance, and why would such a race revisit a planet where the previous wave faced such thorough annihilation? Surely they've found other planets to harvest that pose less of a risk/potential waste of resources? I mean, I know it's a dumb blockbuster, but still, lol.

Even as a kid I watched that scene and was like "Hey bro, that ain't cool. Don't be such a dick."

Seems that Smith was approached and wanted to do it, but having already done a father / son scifi that flopped - and having more interesting roles on the table - it sounds as though it was just a business decision for him. And I wouldn't be a bit suprised if he came back, either. Maybe once he's able to distance himself from after earth and / or the context of his role in ID changes a bit. I don't know, maybe the real boss tech thats been developed is telepathy of some sorts, or something more biological, other than just pew pew boom. Bring back his character through that kind of angle? Meh.

They can merely avoid the subject in the movie and then retcon it later, doubt fans will protest much.

As I mentioned above, I'd rather that not be how (if) they bring him back. His character's personality isn't something you could transpose onto a transcendent being, or an alien hybrid or something.

We liked him for me the guy who knocks out a fucking extra-terrestrial with a single punch then lights a cigar.

They could be testing the water. Seeing how upset fans are about it and whether he's worth the money for future sequels (he is). If they're fine, then that's that. If not (which this 18-page thread suggests) then they might have alternate scenes prepped to suggest that maybe he's not dead.

Maybe they'll remaster the first one as part of the lead-up. The current Blu-ray looks like shit.

Smith will be begging to be let back once this makes $1 billion+ and Suicide Squad flops. I just hope Emerich not only says no but has a long shot of his corpse in the second sequel.
