IndieGAF recommends: The 50 Best Indies of 2013

Great thread! There are many games I've never heard of, I should check them.

It's a shame that Bit.Trip Runner 2 didn't make the cut, but I'm glad to see Bleed, Stanley Parable and Dust on the list.

Cool list, thanks for it. I'll check them out.

It's a shame though that Toki Tori 2 isn't on that list. A truly brilliant puzzle adventure game.

Thanks for the list, hadn't heard of a bunch of those games.

Some small corrections:

Dust was also released on 360.
Fez was also released on 360.
La-Mulana was also released on Wii and isn't even a 2013 game.
Little Inferno was also released on WiiU.
Rogue Legacy wasn't released yet on Vita (and if you want to include future releases it'll also release on PS3 and PS4).
Spelunky was also released on 360, PS3 and Vita.

I'll add it to the notable games that didnt make the cut post later.

Thanks, corrected. And La-Mulana released end of 2012 on Desura/GOG (even though it was a few months earlier on Playism), so we just included it because most of us played it on PC last year and the release date was close enough for the voting :p

La-Mulana was released in 2013 for PC.

I'm wrong as always.

Cheers for this.

I skipped Broforce because I made the rookie mistake of rolling my eyes at the name. That gif and that description, though...
You can't go wrong with Broforce. The thread's here, with more GIFs and info. Game got updated today, haven't played it yet. And from what I read in the forums, it seems like Devolver Digital might now be the publishers

Games for every taste possible. Glorious. And so many great ones still out there. These games are what makes this the true Golden Age of Gaming.

Definitely an omission, but unfortunately, you can't contain all the strong indies in a list of 50 (or even 65, with the appendix).

Here's four that placed pretty highly on my list and didn't make it:

I'll add some more to the appendix, yours included.

Hah, big fan of FEZ, Divekick and Spelunky, those can never get enough recognition. I personally didn't get much out of Gunpoint and Rogue Legacy (also Zeno Clash creeps me out beyond words), but that's part of why I love indie games so much, there's such an incredible variety to be found.

Awesome work as always, Toma (and all the blurb contributors). It's pretty amazing that I've played over half of the games in that list and consider almost each of them a must-play. I'd be hard-pressed to find half as many must-play "retail" games from 2013!

Keep up the good work, guys! :)

Well you got your work cut out for you then with the other half :p

(If you want some recommendations/personal opinions, let me know, and over all: Play Factorio)

Indeed, and this reminds me that I still wanted to check out a game that others here liked. God damn, what was it. Might even be in the OP, need to look that up later.

But yeah, variety is king :)

Oh, and in case anyone needed more reasons to check out Broforce, it just got updated with Machete, Conan, online MP, is coming to Steam Early Access in March, and is now being published by Devolver Digital and will get a PC/console release this summer

Oh it has online MP now? Cool thing.

Fjords looks amazing, how have I never heard of it before.

This is a really good list. We have had some great games in the past year.

Good thread! Subscribed :)

And everyone should play Antichamber. It's a unique experience

I just thought about what I would consider the most "unique" experience and recommend you Fjords, then I thought of Cart Life, Brothers, Clairvoyance, Don't Starve, Factorio, FEZ, Gorogoa... they are all so special.

And I love it.

Just my opinion of course, but I think its one of the best games no one played. Its not that long, but its a very, very unique and special game and I actually do consider it better than Starseed Pilgrim in what it tries to achieve.

There are sooo many games out there that are great, yet no one cares about them, which is the reason we are doing the monthly Indie threads to discover these games. Feel free to join us over there :)

As for the most unique, I'd say Fjords, Mirrormoon, Antichamber, and The Stanley Parable
Still haven't played Starseed Pilgrim

In the monthly threads we dont really care all that much about the distinction, since "Indie" is such a broad term based on distribution, gameplay, concepts etc. that it basically means everything and nothing.

We decided on a simple rule that did us well so far:

If one person (unjokingly) considers it an Indie Game, it counts and we talk about it. Keeps the community open and we avoid 99,9% of all the terminology discussions which lead nowhere anyway.

I can dig it.

Thanks for this thread and the others. Consistently some of the most useful threads on GAF.

You guys should really jump in there sometime and recommend/talk to us a bit :)

Shame time:

I still need to play these games from my own thread:

Brothers
Don't Starve
Knock Knock
Steamworld Dig

Someone motivate me please.

Well you got your work cut out for you then with the other half :p

I said I played "over half" and I probably was being conservative (it's probably closer to 70%-80%). For example, I've played 7 out of the 8 (alphabetically) top games (all but Antichamber, which I'll get eventually). In any case, indeed I will use this thread as a valuable source. Already I'm interested in Mercenary Kings, one of the few I didn't know about, and one that seems right up my alley.

(If you want some recommendations/personal opinions, let me know, and over all: Play Factorio)

I did! Obsessively, even. It was me who gave you the idea for autoloading turrets back then, remember? :). I stopped playing when I had created a factory which automated everything including vial creation and research and had researched everything, but that was many hours in. Awesome game indeed.

You can knock knock Brothers out in an evening, if you just dig into it without starving in the process.

sorry

Yeah, would have been really surprised if you hadnt played it. I just wanted a reason to namedrop Factorio again :p

But they added a shitload of stuff since then, I really need to go back and check what crazy stuff they added.

This thread reminded me that One Finger Death Punch existed; I loved the demo, but hadn't bought the game until now. It turns out it's on sale on a site called ShinyLoot (I hadn't even heard of it until IsThereAnyDeal showed it as the best price). They're legit, though, I just got a Desura key off them.

Both Brothers and Don't Starve are amazing. Brothers is quite dark at times; do not be misled by the colorful, pastoral visuals; it has pretty somber moments. Don't Starve is a distillation of something I truly love about (some) videogames; the sense of discovery and mastery; the transition between abject fear of the unknown into familiarity and understanding. If you liked that feeling in Dark Souls, for example, you probably will love it.
Seriously Toma, you simply cannot miss these two.

Yeah I probably shouldnt miss out on any game on that list (considering I only missed those 4 I did rather well I think). I'll work on Brothers first, because thats apparently rather short. Dont Starve seems like an endless roguelike type of game though, which is why I am waiting until I find enough time to dive in.

Surprised to see two pages of posts and no mention of the excellent Hate Plus.

We definitely featured it when it came out, but I don't think any of us played it. Sad, but true.

I really liked Digital: A Love story, though, if that helps. :P

Lovely list missing one of my favourite multiplayer games in many years: Towerfall!

But I'll forgive you for now GAF, given that the game was only out for Ouya last year. You had better play this masterpiece once it comes to PS4/PC!

It was my #1 until I realized that the PC port wouldn't make it out in time for the vote (the list was PC only).

Looking at that list brings fondly to mind some of the best experiences I've had all 2013. There are also a lot on that list I've never heard of before. Thanks for putting it all together, Toma.

Extremely impressive OT, especially the detailed descriptions of the uniqueness of each title. Subscribing is a no-brainer. This actually gives me hope that I will be able to play through more of the titles that I bought on Steam in 2013.
