Infamous: Second Son Review Thread

So around 80ish metacritic?

Seems about inline with the second game

Very good score. It's good to see the ps4 get a quality retail exclusive after launch

Wow, love what I see with the reviews. The sites I look at the reviews gave upper 8, lower 9 scores. Can't wait.

And as always, some of the lesser sites trying to get clicks with low scores. Don't be that guy lesser known sites.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't Microsoft based in/near Seattle? Any cheeky references to that?

Edit: Well shit, that was supposed to go in the OT. Guess I'll ask here as well.

They improved just about every aspect of gameplay, especially shooting/vehicle handling, the interiors, few though they were, were stunningly realized and detailed, as was the entire state of Los Santos, you could switch between 3 characters super fast on the fly and even switch between them during live missions, you could decide how you wanted to plan your heists down to the people you wanted to bring, and although the online portion took a while to come together, it was still impressive having an entire separate experience aside from the single player.

It's just a damn well realized open world game, and nothing so far I've seen from next gen at all comes close to matching it in terms of that aspect.
It's a little surprising some people are putting down GTA V to prop up Infamous. Infamous could learn a thing or two from Rockstar. GTA V was a master class in open world design, and the standard to which all other open world games will be judged.

Oh shit wow. Yeah those are in fact the powers. No one read the eurogamer review if you don't want to be spoiled.

Yes, that review is a spoiler-fest. :-(

Damn it, thanks guys. I only read one power before closing the tab and to be honest I don't understand it without context but I avoided so much media and previews for this game only to be semi spoiled the day before release. This shit happens to me so often.

Avoid Eurogamers review if you care about spoilers.

Sessler review is the worst review of 2014
All that yapping in the beginning was pathetic

This guy talks elegant about bioshock infinite
here he sounds like a babbling fool, he even forgot Cole wasnt bald anymore wtf smh.

Nope. Halo was a revolutionary game. Call of Duty 4 was a revolutionary. They brought a new feel to their respective young generations, with various gameplay innovations that have defined the genre on their platforms for the entire generation.

what did halo do that was revolutionary regarding gameplay for FPS genre? what did COD4 do that was revolutionary regarding gameplay for the same FPS genre? Heck what did GTAV do that was revolutionary for the open world genre regarding gameplay? Nothing, its the same gameplay that was around in doom and wolfenstien or GTA 3. The revolution was in the scope and realistic feel of the games compared to before. The worlds were bigger, the story more engaging, and the graphics were a drastic improvement.

How is Infamous second son different in that regard. SP created an almost true to life Seattle, how many games have done similar? The story and characters are more engaging and lifelike than other open world games, and the graphics are the best we have for an open world game on consoles. It meets the criteria that the other "revolutionary" games that you mentioned did.

Review scores seem fine. My only prob is with review comments that just don't make sense (e.g. "It plays like a last gen game."). Picking mine up tomorrow.

The reviews seem to be pretty good.

Although on the subject of next gen gameplay being a point of discussion in reviews. I don't personally look for reviews to tell me whether a game is next-gen or not, for me its whether the game is fun or not in your personal opinion as a reviewer nothing more, nothing less. As someone who follows the games I'm sure I could deduce whether a game is next gen enough for myself seeing as its something that is very subjective,

I see why it is necessary to mention in reviews for people who aren't very in the know because they are looking for reasons to upgrade to next gen consoles but I don't think it should effect scores or be used as a detractor.

Not just mine, but everyone's opinion on Gaf means something.

Tons of people got the game early like me and I've only seen two people say they don't really like the game.

It's a fantastic game and I would argue that the impressions people have of the game here are more important than reviews.

I'm not trying to be rude, but pre-release hype impressions for a first party exclusive tend to be even less reliable than reviews from major publications. If I really wanted to get a good idea of what the game was about, I'd wait for opinions at least a few weeks after release.

Yep :)
Loved the second one. So can't wait to play this tomorrow.
Waiting for this since the Feb 2013 reveal ^_^

Am I missing something here? Is 81 a bad score? I don't get how people are knocking this game like it's the worst thing to ever hit the system. I'm so confused, guys.

I don't think people like that its Meta score is lower than the first two games, it makes it look like a downgrade.

This is true. But not comparable to infamous. This isn't infamous staring Delsin, Bob and Tom. GTA is known for its sandbox open world gameplay. It changed its gameplay to fit it's theme. It isn't a linear closed game by all means. For infamous to be like that, it would be shy of DCOL.

It really makes no sense. It's like some people were expecting this game to be a masterpiece or something. The series has always offered a fun, above average gaming experience but nothing more.

I think you'll still enjoy it when you get them. Visually, they're amazing. Definitely needs to be experienced. Knowing what it is won't spoil much for you.

Sorry but titanfall has nothing to do with a infamous review thread. It console war bullshit. If you want to make comparisons make a new thread about it.

A lot of people are using TF to point out a double standard in some reviewers which is relevant to the discussion.

People think 8s are bad now? Seriously?
Obligatory

In response to that guy who couldn't understand why you'd take points off for the gameplay being the same, it's because you don't judge games across different generations on the same scale.

Jim Sterling review actually damn good to me.
Still, for the most part, Second Son is wholly gratifying stuff. Each of the powers feel fully formed and separate, though unified via a shared control scheme - pressing Circle, for example, is going to make Delsin move quickly, but whether he surges forward in a cloud, sprints as a [REDACTED], or grows [REDACTED] is dependent on the equipped power. Combat can be tricky, especially once more powerful DUP agents show up, and a number of opponents are more frustrating than enjoyable to deal with, but overall it's a huge laugh to roll up to a group of soldiers and choke, stab, or stealth-kill them, especially once you've whittled the opposition down to one lone DUP agent, who'll often throw his hands up in surrender - allowing you to deal with him as you wish.
It should be said that Second Son is a thoroughly gorgeous game to look at. Lighting is incredible, each of the powers are brimming with spectacular special effects, and reflections on passing vehicles are particularly stunning. Despite talk of visual downgrading since its first public reveal, Second Son delivers in the visual department. The same holds true for audio, with an impressive soundtrack that kicks in at just the right moments, and that aforementioned brilliant voice cast.

damn, some of the posts in here are crazy. You'd think Sessler took a dump on the box or something, not given it a perfectly respectable 3/5 score. We need another one of those Mama Robotnik's wall of shames.

I fail to see the logic behind this..

Talking about my preferences in games is derailing the thread. They are my preferences.

When PS4 has the games I want, I will have it. I was holding out for Infamous but I can totally hold out a bit longer now as i'm not all 'nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnggghhh' for it after reading, in depth, all these reviewers experiences.

I hope you have fun with it. I will try it out, as I said, at a friends house. If it turns me onto PS4, I will let you know.

Just so everyone knows these reviews mean nothing.

This game is so god damn awesome and everyone should pick it up tomorrow.

It's the most fun I've had with a video game in a long time.

Indeed!!

I've seen enough not to overreact to some of these pest ridden review scores and actually look forward to playing...

The haters are definitely loving the reaction though... Job well done...

It's a little surprising some people are putting down GTA V to prop up Infamous. Infamous could learn a thing or two from Rockstar. GTA V was a master class in open world design, and the standard to which all other open world games will be judged.
But inFAMOUS is actually fun.

The game's 81 Metacritic average makes it the best reviewed AAA exclusive (discounting Titanfall which is on PC/360 eventually).

Knack at 54, Ryse at 60, Killzone at 73, Dead Rising at 78, Forza V at 80, and now Infamous on top at 81.

Also puts it roughly in line with the 83 of the second game. Sounds fine to me.

Please.

Compare GTA3 to GTA5 and then inFamous 1 to inFamous: Second Son. GTA5 managed to maintain what people loved about GTA3 but really push everything forward in terms of narrative, gameplay, open world, graphics, etc. It felt fresh and new yet still was a "GTA" game.
GTA3 (2001) - GTA5(2013) = 12 yrs
Infamous 1 (2009) - Infamous SS (2014) = 5yrs

Why are you giving GTA the benefit of more the double the time of Infamous to develop into a far more diverse game?

Imagine a world without review scores and metacritic. People would stop giving a shit about reviews, I guess that's why the numbers are still there.

A lot of people are using TF to point out a double standard in some reviewers which is relevant to the discussion.

It's not at all. How can there be a double standard on the expectations of a multiplayer only fps vs a non multiplayer 3rd person Action game. I don't think it's relevant for the situation.

Damn it, thanks guys. I only read one power before closing the tab and to be honest I don't understand it without context but I avoided so much media and previews for this game only to be semi spoiled the day before release. This shit happens to me so often.

They also spoiled the ending of Infamous 2.

More than credibility sake, it's the fact that if they blow all the 10/10 at the beginning of the gen, it will get stale too soon.

There is certainly that as well. Do they give early gen games extremely high scores knowing historically those are the least remembered and games get a lot better in year 2 and on? As good as titanfall or infamous or any other game is now it will likely pale in comparison to later games. I could see that factoring in, and perhaps the next gen gameplay critique is a poor way to frame that.

8s are bad because modern reviewers are too afraid to go below a 5. An 8 is basically a 6 or so.
Was definitely true 5 or so years ago, but I don't think it's the case anymore. I know I don't see a score like 7 or 8 in the same light today as I saw it few years ago.
