Infamous: Second Son Review Thread

Sounds like this is just another mediocre Infamous game with a fresh coat of paint. Sony should probably consider shelving this series for a while.

Funny how the people and sites who are giving this marked down reviews because of the repetitive nature and no side missions are the same people who gave high marks/praise to titanfall despite it being CoD with wallrunning and mechs, no singleplayer and repetitive FPS action.

That's what you get when you get people that try to act like gamers but really aren't. you get sentences like this, "gameplay isn't as next-gen". What that means is the guy doesn't have a clue on what he's talking about and is trying to fit into the gamer community.

lol

A game which many people will buy a console specifically to play that game. CoD, Zelda, GTA, Halo, etc.

Those are games that sell a lot of software, that has nothing to do with hardware sales. Niche games that are "popular" like Persona, Guilty Gear, Bayonetta, Street fighter, and MLB The Show will have a hardcore fanbase that are more likely to buy a system due to that one game.

The term system seller is annoying to see because the definition people are using is flawed and doesn't actually relate to hardware sales. Remember how many Wii Party sold? Take a look at Wii U Party. Remember how Mario was always the go to game when the words "system seller" came up? Look at how Mario 3d world helped the Wii U....

why do they keep calling the fire ability the smoke ability.
Are there actually any smoke attacks?

Because they're called Smoke in the game.

I don't know them and that presumption you just made is why I don't read reviews until after I beat a story based game like SS. I don't know what the other powers are and I'd like to be surprised.

The presumption was because of the big GAF thread about the other powers. But again, Sony asked reviewers not to spoil the specifics of the latter powers or story, so you should be fine. But I understand avoiding them for story reasons. Only one reviewer needs to split up.

The problem here is that the data will show an increase in PS4 sales this month alongside inFamous coming out. The data also neglects to show those who bought a console early for this game. If TF is a system seller because there's a boost in Xbox One sales in March, then wouldn't the same be true when that inevitably happens for Sony this month too?

What released game plays like a "next gen game" so far on the new consoles?

All the well reviewed games like Assassins Creed Black Flag, Titanfall etc. sure don't and are playable on last gen hardware.

I think Titanfall stirs the pot substantially enough to be called a true "next gen game". As we still haven't seen anything on the 360 version, it wouldn't shock me if it was as cut down and shitty as Battlefield 4 is; i.e., the same game in name only.

Im just getting frustrated with that guy. I seriously dont understand how he gave Titanfall a 5 (which is graphically underperforming, framerate is dropping etc.) and Infamous only a 3 which is graphically an amazing looking game, has fantastic acting / face performances and a great story.
Hilarious(sad?) that you only care about their presentation.

Good scores. I dunno what "next gen gameplay" means and why points are taken down for the lack of it though?

Exactly, dude is a joke and has no credibility in my book.
OT: tomorrow cannot come soon enough.

He lost credibility in my book with all the next gen launch drama and his hypocrisy about 1080p and downplaying PS4's price advantage, saying it cost as much as the Xbone with the Camera and PS+.

Now that we're talking about Sessler and open world games, I like this little gem of his on GTA V

"I can imagine, 200 years from now, like our reading of Dickens, the game will be regarded as a catalog of our contemporary travails, an accelerated reality bearing more truth than just gazing at our own reflection."

I'm very pleased with the most of the scores so far. This game is going to be great. Now all we, or should I say some of us, have to do is wait for the game's release and enjoy. Tomorrow's going to be a good day.

Well, it's a shame I couldn't reach you. Perhaps you'll find a reviewer or other body whose tastes align with yours. Good journey, sir.

It's not about tastes. I haven't played the game yet, I don't know if I like it or not. But I have never found a reviewer that mirrored my feelings about a game.

Years ago games sold on word of mouth, game box design, demos and the odd review was used to confirm whether the game would be good through points not arbitrary numbers between 1-10.

Now. Games are solely represented by their meta-critic review score. A review score written by a corrupt, broken industry suck-ups. The mere fact this thread exists is awful. We are all slaves to review scores. It sucks.

I don't really care about review scores but it just seems odd that this series' Metascores keep going down when, if GAF impressions about SS are correct, each game has been a big improvement over the last.

I really don't understand why anyone was expecting this to be the 10/10 game. Neither of the other infamous games really stood out and left a mark. Sure they were fun, but hardly anything ground breaking.

I'm actually surprised that my review is on the high-end there.

That's quite understandable.

Seems a bit cynical, but you're quite entitled to your feelings, my friend.

It's getting good scores, the Infamous series is something I love but it's never been a critical darling and it's always had the deep flaws that justify that.

What I was looking for in review scores was that they didn't fuck up Infamous, and it turns out they didn't.

Attacking reviewers for giving a game a good score just goes to show how little gamers change. The circle is unbroken.

This is not a SimCity situation (though with the giant day 1 patch, delayed reviews may have been more than justified depending on the content and polishing). Remember when Uncharted 3 wasn't getting perfect scores and people were shitting blood over it? Well it turns out it wasn't as good as Uncharted 2 and a ton of those same angry fanboys now think the critics were too nice.

If looking at a score makes you angry, step away. Calm down. Did they justify whatever evaluation they gave in their review? If they did, and you disagree. That's okay.

Titanfall has not a thing to do with Infamous, the only thing they have in common is that it turns out they're both apparently good games.

It should not have to reinvent the wheel in order to be a great game and do what is expected of the series. It looks great and it's one to check out for sure whenever I decide to get a PS4.

BS statement? I´m sorry, i´m not impressed by just a leap in resolution and particle systems, that´s just that, a leap in graphics expected with new hardware.

Gameplay evolves over time? Infamous 2 came out in 2011, if you take a look at I SS the gameplay is the same with just that bump in graphics. They could have focus a lot more on physics systems to offer a better immersion on the whole sandbox the game is, destructabilty is another one.
The game feels and plays exactly as the previous one in a new generation of hardware, it´s not bad but it´s not a step forward and it´s mostly dissapointing.

Exactly. Still a good game but come on, it's a new gen! Surprise us! Blow our minds with stuff never seen before!

I respect Sessler as a reviewer but it's this sort of existential philosophical wank that really turns me off him.

Being like Gravity Rush is basically the highest praise a game can receive in my eyes, so that would be great news for me.

yup as much as i suck at that game, the first time you play it is one of the best experiences that a gamer can have these days , it has this Japanese magic that sucks you in .

Sorry, but what does an old-gen game play like? I'm so confused by this arbritary distinction between what is "next-gen" and "old-gen" gameplay? Sure, if it was technically not possible on last-gen hardware, maybe I could understand.

But what is an example of "next-gen" gameplay from games which are currently released for PS4/XBO?

MGS V it´s a wonderful and tragic example of that. It´s a major step forward in the franchise but it comes with a ridiculous price tag for a demo.

You have still not explain what is next gen game play is and name 1 game that has it .
Also the game does have better destructibility compare to the old ones .

I can't help but laugh when games on a certain system (in this case playstation) get a 10/10 from a site called "Playstation Universe". The same when a MS game gets a 9/10 or 10/10 from "Xbox Nation" or something of the like. Even if the game is good and warrants the score it's still like...come on, lol.

A lot of the game we play today, especially sequels never offer any different gameplay. Of all series out there, which on did? AC is still rocking the same gameplay from the first one, they just add new stuff like weapons, guns, islands.. Come on now. Besides Nintendo, it's very hard to point out these games that are always offering something new in the gameplay department

I've seen at least one person that played the game to completion agree with his points being accurate.

Also, maybe he didn't enjoy or have fun with the game. Do you play games for just graphics and acting?

Most of us play for fun/enjoyment.

Different people enjoy different things.

Ouch! Not even in the 80s. Seems next gen games getting reviewed pretty harsh these days. I had fun with Ryse and it's low score, so I don't doubt people with have fun with Infamous. I thought the first Infamous was fun, beat it, but meh, so repetitive after a while. I heard the second one was pretty much the same. Gonna need to read some more reviews on why this one is getting the lowest reviews of all the Infamous games.

Lol at people getting upset about "gameplay isn't next gen". TBH, from what I've seen, it doesn't. It a super safe game that is taking the gameplay elements of the previous games and adding very little. Basically the game isn't doing anything that feels fresh. There are a few things I was hoping to see from the franchise that would have made the gameplay feel fresh but they chose not to. The 7 and 8 reviews seems on point and I question anything above

I was hoping they would take a step forward. New hardware, focusing on a new character...sounds like a good time to mix things up, right?

Not everyone is capable of a reinvention in the vein of Resident Evil 4, and it would obviously be unrealistic to expect that, but it would be nice to see some evidence that anyone was even trying. And again, not with every single game in a series, but this was a good time to move things forward with the new hardware, new character, etc.

Oh Edge...
If it wasn’t for the breathtaking view – and in terms of lighting, shadow and detail, Second Son exceeds even Shadow Fall’s visual achievements – it would be easy to confuse this with an early release for the previous console generation. And not a very good one.
