Infinity Ward: Making a new game other than COD "would be the easy way out"

This thread pretty much covered it.

But I do like the COD games. I'm part of the problem and am looking forward to Ghosts.

lol ^ This. My immediate reaction to this quote was "It must be opposite world day".

He's right to some extent. Given the popularity of CoD and the competitive framework around it, any tweaks and subtle changes can have massive impacts on familiar game modes. It's always been this way, but it's also the same challenge games like BF face. The community can quite easily create a shitstorm about the way a gun handles - I expect these arguments to be hearty about the counter knife in BF4.

Look how much traction titanfall has gotten. In reality a very very small number of people have played it - and to be fair, given positive reviews - but the main thing driving that game at the moment is simple marketing and hype.

Although, having said that, the way he speaks it's not just as easy to rebrand an existing IP or create a completely new one. There is always an element of risk - look at Medal of Honour for example. A brave studio would do both in my opinion (if they were really really determined that is).

God, working at Infinity Ward must blow. The devs have to be making bank though otherwise everyone would just up and leave. You are a Call of Duty dev, you are hireable anywhere.

Fast paced arcadey gameplay is what brings people to COD, Titanfall one ups them at their own game. Even if it's a bit sci-fi-ish, the weaponry is still grounded in reality. No Halo plasma guns here.

New IP : Check
Sci Fi : Check
Can't use Call of Duty Title in ads : Check
Won't sell half of Ghosts on Xbox/One : To be confirmed

I get what he is saying. Change it to much and people will say its not cod anymore, make to few changes and people will complain its stale. Finding that balance cant be easy.

Finding that balance isn't easy. You what's also not easy? Creating a succesful, new IP and a game to launch that IP. In fact, it is way, way harder.

Yeah.

He's right.

Making a new IP would be the easy way out... buuuuuuuuuuuuuut it would also mean they have to start from scratch.

That has to be one of the dumbest things I've ever read.

Apologies for the harsh opinion, but really?

Crafting an entirely new universe with new game mechanics, seeking a new audience hoping to obtain a hardcore following and actually obtain success from scratch is considered easier than just making another fucking rehash of COD?

Again, apologies for the harsh wording... but my goodness. Is this a joke?
Is it april?

He's saying, I think, that while it would be easier just to trash Call of Duty for something new, it would be 100x harder to get it off the ground.

He just phrased it so poorly because he didn't want to bring up the issue of games needing to make money.

Maybe he means it in a different way.

...
Like "the easy way out" means "suicide". Since all the talent left to Respawn, they can't do anything else, and the 'easy way out' would be to try to make something new which would kill the company.

That statement made as much sense to me as the title of this topic.

It would be easy to throw away the norm for something 100x harder, so i'll just stick with the norm... which happens to be easy now... because i've been doing it for 8+ years

:(

I'm sorry, the logic just doesn't work for me.
And yes, i can only guess how hard it is to craft a game that millions of people care about. There's no easy when it comes to developing and executing games... but still, i just don't get it.

ever since they became the B tier COD studio ive been really wanting to see if they could do anything interesting or if this was it

Seems like Activision realized that the actual talent is gone so this is the company line now

Kinda sucks

Not everyone is nervous and awkward on a first date.

And by the looks of it, some of the first slate of next-gen games will pretty good without current gen.

So firstly crap analogy, secondly don't lie.

You need to phrase your original question a little better, I misread and thought you were asking about "a" (as in any) next-gen MP game.

For Ghosts, no hard numbers have been thrown around as far as I know, but it still seems to be 18 players max.

Without dedicated servers, any more than 18 would be a lag fest.

People arent understanding what hes saying.

Its like if EA needed to find ways of making Madden fresh and exciting and someone suggested 'what if all the players drove rocket cars.' Obviously thats the easy way out but its something they cant do unless they create a new franchise.

SMH, It would be close to impossible for the talent left at Infinity Ward to start over from scratch and create another series as popular as COD. A lot of the talent at Infinity Ward left for Respawn or went on to form other gaming companies. The people that are here now seem to be just sticking to the same old safe formula.

IMO, I think they played it a little too safe with Ghost. It barely seems like a next gen title.
