At the beginning of the Kree-Skrull War, millions of years ago in Earth time, the alien Kree established a station on the planet Uranus, a strategic position between the Kree and Skrull empires. Through their work at this station, they discovered that sentient life on nearby Earth had genetic potential invested in it by the alien Celestials. Intrigued, the Kree began to experiment on Earth's then-primitive Homo sapiens to produce the genetically advanced Inhuman race. Their goal was apparently twofold—to investigate possible ways of circumventing their own evolutionary stagnation, and to create a powerful mutant race of soldiers for use against the Skrulls.[14] Although their experiments were successful in creating a strain of humanity with extraordinary abilities, the Kree abandoned their experiment because a genetic prophecy had predicted that the experiments would eventually lead to an anomaly who would destroy the Kree Supreme Intelligence.[15]

Their test subjects, the Inhumans, went on to form a society of their own, which thrived in seclusion from the rest of humanity and developed advanced technology. Experiments with the mutagenic Terrigen Mist (a process known as Terrigenesis) gave them various powers, but caused lasting genetic damage and deformities. This led to a long-term selective breeding program in an attempt to mitigate the effects of these mutations.

Attilan's society and culture are predicated on a conformist belief system which permits individuality as it applies to genetic development and physical and mental ability, but demands rigid conformity in that each member of society is assigned a place within that society according to those abilities following exposure to the Terrigen Mist. Once assigned, no Inhuman, no matter how great or powerful, can change their place within this rigid caste system.[16][17] Although a member of the Royal Family, Crystal married outside the Inhuman race to the mutant Quicksilver.[18]

The Inhumans are led by their king, Black Bolt, and his Royal Family, consisting of Medusa, Karnak, Gorgon, Triton, Crystal, Maximus the Mad, and the canine Lockjaw. Both Crystal and Medusa have been members of the Fantastic Four; Crystal has been a member of the Avengers as well.

When Inhumans reach the age of majority they are exposed to terrigen mist. Which mutates them some times they develop amazing abilites. Some times they are devolved into a subhuman form. Inhumans have a council that tries to predict any weird changes, but they are not one hundred percent.

Terrigen Mist exposure on humans is unpredictable at best.

Inhumans are ruled by the Royal Family.

King Blackagar Boltagon

His power to harness electrons is tied to his voice box. When he speaks, the universe listens

Queen Medusa(also Black Bolt's cousin)

She has the power to control her hair, which has the tensile strenght of high grade steel. She speaks for Black Bolt using a sign language they developed as children.

Karnak(Black Bolt's cousin and advisor)

His parents choiced not to expose him to the mist, because of what it did to Trtiton. But on his own he develop a martial art ability that allowed him to spot the weakness in anything.

Gorgon(Black Bolt's cousin and bodyguard)

His exposure to the mist gave him hooves that allows him to generate shockwaves.

Crystal(Medusa's sister)

Use to date Johnny Storm, but married and produce a child with Quicksilver. Her mastery over the 4 elements makes her the second most powerful member of the Royal family.

Triton(cousin to black bolt and brother to Karnak.)

Due to his mutation by the mist he is forced to live in the aquatic section of the Inhuman's city.

Lockjaw

Royal family pet and transportation. One of the most powerful teleporters in the marvel universe.

Maximus The Mad (Black Bolt's other brother)

Super smart mind controller that is also batshit crazy.

The Inhuman's city is Attlian.

Originally hidden in the Himalayas, it's been moved to the ocean, to the moon, into space, and finally to the Kree homeworld of Hala.

Didn't they just destroy Attlian?

And it'll be weird if those rumors about rebooting Xmen as the result of the Terrigen bomb being used are true.

The incursions left me a bit confused. How close are Blackagar and Maximus? They seemed to care for and trust each other quite a bit.

Thanos didnt destroy Attilan. BB did. Last ditch effort and allathat.

My first experience with The Inhumans was Paul Jenkins and Jae Lee's 1999 run. It was a great introduction to the world of The Inhumans and turned out to be one of my favorite comic arcs.

But I still can't get over Black Bolt's real name.

Maximus has been pretty ace in the illuminati universe splosion event, but I've never heard of him before - or the inhumans in general aside from Black Bolt.

They love each a lot. Anyone else would have killed Maximus years ago, but Bolt just locks him up. Maximus never goes full crazy because he cares about his brother.

The way Black Bolt talks about his wives is interesting. The "one I love, one I hate hate, and 3 I don't care about" is such a strange line.

always thought BB had one of the coolest costumes. Really curious to see how Marvel's gonna make them bankable

It's kinda like Thor and Loki. Blackagar knows his brother can be a real shitheel but he feels bad for him. IIRC, wasn't Black Bolt partially responsible for Maximus' psychotic nature, and the stifling of his mental powers?

Jenkins/Lee run is the best Marvel thing I've ever read. Loved the art, plot and characters.

Here's hoping the movie is as close to that as possible.

Just one thing to fix in your OP.

Karnak is Triton's brother and cousin to Black Bolt. His parents chose to not expose him to the mist because of what it did to Triton.

He's not Black Bolt's brother.

Well Maximus was plotting with the Kree, and when BB used his voice to stop the Kree the vibrations fucked Maximus up. But the crazy was already there, it just sped it up.
Wait.....Karnak and Triton are brothers, not Karnak and Black Bolt.....

He's not Black Bolt's brother.
Will fix.

So she's the Avatar?

dude yes. I love triton and lockjaw. I hope they are both fully realized for this film and I really hope Marvel gets their shit together with Namor so he can appear.

One thing that I hate about the Inhumans though (but also am kind of charmed by), is how humorless their tone always is. It's almost part of their character that they always remain ultra formal with each other, nobody ever jokes about anything except Maximus when he's losing it... they're almost the opposite of GotG.

So the celestial Inhumans thing is confusing to me

One of the purposes of Inhumans is that they look like other alien species so they can be used as sleeper cell agents and spies, so how does the other 4 inhuman races fit in with that?

I don't know, guess I just don't like there being multiple Inhuman species

I guess so they can blend in with human mutants?

Maybe?

It seems like most of the alien Inhumans look like their basic race although I could see how it could get confusing

One thing I've always liked is the idea that the terrigen changes the Inhumans based on the needs of the colony and that it's not random

Black Bolt made a joke once, in the New Avengers Illuminati miniseries.

It was pretty good.

Never again.

Makes for good fan drama. Same reason Namor is a cunt.

What is the origin of that pic of maximus sexing medusa, btw?

It's from Silent War, the part of the Inhumans' story that comes between Son of M and Secret Invasion. As I recall,
it really is Medusa and Maximus, but Black Bolt at this point is later retconned to be a Secret Invasion skrull
.

actually he was replaced sometime after Silent War

Seems like a weird choice to move onto the big screen, very different from the rest of Marvel's movieverse projects.
Will be interesting to see how it develops.

So wait, if this started with experimentation on humans due to their hidden genetic potential... how'd Lockjaw end up in the mix?

Do dogs have this hidden genetic potential as well? Or was he a human whose mutation included turning into a dog?

Once they said he was an inhuman that was turned into a dog, now they say he was a dog that was mutated.

Kamala Khan, The New Ms. Marvel is the only Inhuman and can be bothered to give a fuck about .

Besides She and Lockjaw are the most adorable team.

It's fascinating to see the difference between the reactions to Inhumans and the reactions back when Guardians was announced.

No one seems to doubt Marvel Studios anymore. :)
