Insider Gaming - Xbox Partner Preview Confirmed for This Week

No silent hill? thats really fucking weird how it just dropped on xbox without as much as peep from bloober or konami

How exactly would you do that "console like fully open device"?

Detail it if you want.
Already mentioned details. A small form factor PC for the livingroom would work.
I have such a device. Not "locked in" to anything. And Play Anywhere is awesome, means I can continue on old saves from the time on Xbox and means I don't have to repurchase anything. There is no downside to it. Playnite can launch games from all launchers so there is no added friction at all from starting games from Xbox App versus Steam or any other storefront. So there is no reason what so ever to rip off any "Xbox bandaid" unless you plan to lock yourself into another ecosystem.
So you are using a PC with Playnite everywhere? You're not really affected. The store and the "livingroom device" being an xbox giving you access to only the limited number of play anywhere titles is the vendor lockin. Sure you use playnite to make it seamless in UI when on your PC and don't care but you're still vendorlocked to windows store and when you go to your livingroom device you're still vendorlocked and can only play your very limited "play anywhere" titles from windows store. I'm saying if somebody finds "play anywhere" truly important it's better if you have that fully open device everywhere and get rid of that xbox bandaid. Then you can truly play your entire library anywhere and purchase anywhere (yes that includes saves too).

What kind of garbage is that supposed to be? My God, I haven't seen something this bad in a long time. Does Eminem really need this?

SH2R Remake is even 50% off, this true?

Yes. Introductory discount, same thing Death Stranding did when it came to Xbox earlier this year. Supposedly it's ~$33 (conversion from AUD) in USD, so this seems like this'll be a $70 release otherwise.

You're never "locked in" on a desktop PC, you're just double clicking another shortcut on the desktop and you're inside a different storefront/launcher.

But when you're in the living room and boot your PC into something to use controller-only you can feel "locked in". For example you can feel stuck to Steam's Big Picture mode or to Xbox App's Fullscreen mode.

Xbox App is less restrictive than Steam since it automatically add games from other launchers, no manual operations needed to add games. But it only add those already installed, you'll see nothing uninstalled and can't browse your full library.

With Playnite you dodge all locks. You log in to your accounts and then you have access to literally everything. Installed games, uninstalled games, all store accounts, full Gamepass library. One huge list of all games in your possession. Can be exhausting tbh… But I rather take that than dealing with the feeling that I should repurchase something just to have it in another UI. I often repurchased games when I booted into Steam BPM and literally forgot that I already owned games on Epic and GOG etc since I never saw them.

I'm not sure how else to explain vendor lockin for you. If you have a desktop pc + xbox. You are vendorlocked to windowstore if you want to "play anywhere". As in you have to buy from that vendor to be able to play it in your livingroom and on xbox you are further locked into a limited amount of games too (usually games by MS being the vendor). If you rip off that xbox bandaid and go desktop PC + livingroom PC you can buy from any store, you can play any game. You're not locked in to anything.

What? No you can use whatever you like. bazzite or whatever. You use playnite yourself for example.

Can you play Gamepass games with Bazzite?? Isn't that based on Linux?

Either way third party alternatives is how you reach a fully open scenario. Sorry if that's what you meant the whole time. Third party like Playnite is the only way to do it right now. And then you don't actually need to rip off any bandaid for anything, you just go through your gigantic list of games and whatever launcher a game is tied to will start in the back and that's it.

You can play gamepass games on Bazzite but only those that aren't tied to the Xbox app only. So for example Battle.net and EA app games on gamepass will work. The annoying part is that in MS' infinite wisdom and love for that vendor lockin you need to initially tie those launchers on any windows machine then any games on Gamepass tied to those other launchers will work on Bazzite too. If you don't like other OS like SteamOS or Bazzite and rely heavily on MS/xbox then I think Playnite is the best choice for you.

Well I don't like Linux but the main problem with SteamOS is that it's laser focused on Steam, there is no integration of other store accounts there.

So that's not really usable for me if I want a fully open multi store device. I use all stores and need that well-presented browse, install, play functionality from all stores. And Gamepass needs to be there too of course.

It's bad enough that I can't buy games on the menu anymore when using Playnite.
But I've accepted to use the phone for that now. I can click a menu and update library and the new game will pop up with nice art and game info and all in the menu within a couple seconds. Good enough.

It's funny tbh, both MS and Valve likes to throw around the "open" term now but when you use their launcher frontends you quickly realize that they aren't really open. Everything outside their own store is different variations of bad experiences.

MS is flirting with multi store users by integrating other store accounts to Xbox App to automatically add games to the menu.
But last time I tried it only added already installed games, essentially just scraping the disk, and cover art was wrong or missing and there was no game info at all. Uninstalled games don't show up, so no browsing and installing from the menu.

And Valve does nothing at all on Steam besides allowing you to manually add exe files to get a menu shortcut, extremely bareboned experience.

"Open platform"
🙄

Yep, and it's Xbox Play Anywhere. I picked it up myself. I'll play it with the wife on the XSX, and then play it again on my gaming PC with all the bells and whistles.

Wait, is it available in other regions too or are you in Aus?

Baby steps. Don't know if Valve needs it, but MS needs it to differentiate itself next gen. I fully expect Magnus to have seamless store navigation and purchases

Yeah, Valve tries to use SteamOS to push their own store too but just to let you know SteamOS itself does still allow other launchers from desktop mode in the same way that you personally use Playnite on windows. You can use Heroic Games Launcher or Lutris on steamOS. Those launchers allow you to use all the other stores, like GoG or Epic, in one place on linux distros like SteamOS. The only exception is MS not being nice with linux "xbox app" support, so only some gamepass games. If the gamepass game is tied to a launcher that is third party then you can normally still use it fine just like the Bazzite method I mentioned before.
