How come there's no thread about this movie? I watched it yesterday and it's the first time in many years that I actually do get scared. More then recommended. If you like the suspense/horror genre, please watch it!

Don't let the poster fool you. Although the story revolves around the boy, it has nothing to do with a possessed child. I absolutely loved the use of 80's sound effects/score and camera work.

I'd rate it a 9.
 
The first 75% of this is literally the perfect horror movie. Better than anything you'll find elsewhere.


The last 25%? Not so much.
 
I want to see Insidious and Paranormal Activity but I'm just too scared.

What's haunted? The trailers said
the kid had a demon in him
or something like that. Is this so?

There's a little more to it than that, but yes, that is correct.
 
loved, loved, loved this movie. The last act was weak. But the rest more than makes it worth seeing. It's the first movie in a long time that actually got to me a bit. It also pays homage to lots of classic movies, mostly Poltergeist.

Not exactly. :P

But that is closer to the truth than a haunted house.

And I agree, the last part of the movie is weak compared to the rest, but still good imo.

The part where Josh needs to find Dalton in the 'other side' has some really scary stuff, like those weird people/spirits smiling and acting weird, the music playing, etc.

At the moment, I guess it's not far off, but that's not really saying much. While the film's clear Polanski inspiration is admirable, it's horribly signposted with massive neon signs throughout.

Except Insidious actually calls on classical horror tropes not found in the genre these days and has some absolutely fantastic moments of terror with some truly amazing art direction.

I won't defend the third act because it's clearly so divisive that it's pointless to even debate about it, but I would say that this is definitely the best horror film I've seen in a very long time.
 
I must be in the minority because I thought it was a pretty boring presentation wrapped around a few jump moments. I'm more scared by marblehornets than this movie. But then, I thought Paranormal Activity was one of the dullest things I've ever watched, so maybe I should've gone in with lower expectations.

But I did like how
they used the special lights to see things, like those AWESOME creepy girls in the white dresses, and then when their family shows up while the dad is exploring
.

I think the concept was cool, and I'd watch a sequel if they somehow did one, but it's hard for me to recommend it to anyone else.

Agreed totally. I actually liked the third act, but I can understand why it's divisive.
 
The scares were nasty and the score was fucking fantastic.

The back end was hampered by their puppet-on-a-tricycle moment when
we see the red dude's lair and he's listening to "creepy" music, filing his nails, and has a bunch of "creepy" dolls. Too much.
 
Got back from it tonight. I think this is the first film I've ever seen in the cinema that actually had me pretty terrified. I was soaked in sweat from the tension. The whole audience was, with quite a few screams throughout as well. I know it was mainly built around quick, cheap scares, but I was still on the edge of my nerves the whole time. Unlike Paranormal activity which didn't affect me at all.

I agree the last act went down hill a bit, but I still loved the last few scenes.

Best horror I've seen in a long time!

Now time to watch some comedy before I sleep.
 
Just got back from seeing it. The first 2/3 of the movie is fucking terrifying.

Ending could have gone in a better direction.

Really starting to like this director. I want Dead Silence on blu ray dammit! That movie is beautiful!
 
I was so creeped out by this movie but the ending really sucked and I saw it coming from the first school scene

I don't understand how the old woman got in so quickly the father it seems hasn't traveled in decades so shouldn't his connection be extremely strong ? Or was it just that she has allways been there with him and so she had tons of stored up energy ?
 
Saw this last night. The opening credits put me off, I thought "This is gonna be cheesy as hell!" but then the first 2/3 scared the shit out of me. It got a little silly towards the end (as most of these sorta films do). Seems most people agree. The
'guy sharpening his claws in room filled with puppets / 'creepy 50s family with grins' felt overdone. I hated how they used the cliche of an old woman in a veil and the 'creepy twins' thing.
Still, held up for most of it - haven't felt such a good feeling of dread in the cinema for a long time. Was fun.

That's accurate.

It is a good horror movie when it remains rooted in the real world but when it goes into the
astral projection stuff
it becomes silly and stupid.

I am on board with the 75% scariest shit ever, 25% not so much.

I think...

...the problem with the ending is that it looked so 'cheap'. The stuff in the dark was nice, the stuff in the house with the fucked up family was cool, too. But when they go into the Red Lair, it looked like an episode of Are You Afraid of the Dark. Worse than that, the 'action' bits were shot and cut really poorly. It's really strange. The 'feel' of the movie goes down the shitter until the ending...which I liked.

Overall, though. Awesome stuff.
 
I really didn't like this movie at all, aside from the score. The last 1/3..... ugh!

Pity as I liked both PA and PA2...

Saw this last night. It was tense until they went into that
soul possession
mumbo jumbo. Although I did like the
scary otherworld version of the house. I actually wanted to know the background behind those creepy family (the daughter killed the whole family?)
. Still, it was a pretty ok film. Not memorable enough though.
 
Just watched this... I think this movie gave me more spine chilling moments in its first 2/3rds than any movie ever. I knew they were coming and some of them were cheap but I couldn't help getting freaked out when I saw the money shots.

The third act is so weird, a bit disappointing but not without some good qualities. The tension was kind of gone, but it was still pretty entertaining, some neat imagery. And somewhat... campy.

There's a part where the father gets
knocked over and sent flying to the ground by that evil spirit or whatever, and it looked like something from the 60's Batman show

I really enjoyed the movie. Some really good scares in there and the score is outstanding. I didn't mind the last 1/3 besides the
red lair bit
but will probably end up being my favourite horror movie this year.

I saw it opening night and have been wanting to watch it again so I can't wait for the blu-ray next week.
 
Watched it tonight.

There's something almost indescribable about it. The whole way through there's this feelings of a "soft dread." No burst-out-of-the-closet scares, but rather some underlying sense that something isn't right.

I really enjoyed the shift
to the father's perspective towards the end. The journey through the dark, and searching through the old house.
It gave a really interesting sense of dread.

There were no scenes where you feel like you have to jump out of your seat. This isn't one of those films. It's just... I don't know... like a feeling of things going wrong.


I am really, really looking forward to Wan's and Whannell's futures as film makers. One day I think they're both going to craft a very terrifying film. Saw, Dead Silence, and now Insidious are slowly paving the way. They both seem to "get" the Hitchcock-esque style of movie-making.

I am eagerly awaiting their next film.

In closing, I eagerly encourage fans of "scary" films to watch this movie.
 
I'm surprised this movie did not get more attention when it came out. Most horror movies these days just try to gross you out but this movie genuinely scared the ever living shit out of me and it's scary moments did not just rely on pop-ups. There is some great built up tension which the audio brings home to scare the hell out of you.

This was the scariest horror movie I had seen since [Rec] and its scary moments did not come from just one scene. If you like horror movies this should definitely not be missed.
 
Just saw this today, I liked the movie, but the end just seemed to drag on. I also didn't understand why Lin Shaye had to put on a bio-hazard mask to give her psychic message out to the family.

It had a hose connected to Specs' ear-piece. She whispered everything to him. Granted it seemed a bit "wtf?" but it was a more interesting way of conveying secrecy than simply her whispering in his ear.
 
I just felt the build up of the movie and the wife's acting were too weak and dragged it down.
And everything in the final third was just kinda thrown out together, lots of purposes that could add up to the fear/tenebrosity of the movies went amiss.

But the score and the opening scene were pretty chilly.

Yes, I know that, but the film made no attempt to answer why that was necessary. It was just there to make the scene look more dark and frightful which is kind of lazy on the directors part. As i said though, I still really liked the film.
