Nothing surprising.

Live Service games encourage players to spend way more money. Makes the case for more FP-developed Live Service games.

Would like to see more co-op Live Service games from Sony FP.

Again, of all the game companies out there why would Insomniac be targeted?

You're assuming they were singled out. They probably weren't. All FP devs were probably provided this presentation.

They probably use the unreported data to spin the numbers to who they favor.
It's fair to assume though that if someone does not want to be known their gender it would be girls. So any spin might not entirely be that far from the truth.
Boys (or probably just everyone) get those mass spam messages with links to some naked lady or whatever. That's a waste of time but girls probably get harrased with direct messages in the second they anounce their gender. And I would want to avoid that also. Getting some creep to stalk me just because would hardly excite me.

A spin nonetheless, it is based on assumptions not reality. I do agree females are more likely to not reveal their gender but enough of them to even the percentage with the reported data? I doubt it.

Lol I’m trying to figure out why someone at Insomniac would just be clicking shit.

That's what people do. They search all parts of the web on their work computers and download all sorts of things. They also are probably set up for remote access and have all sorts of shit on their personal device.

People aren't smart and they don't care about security.

It's why companies do phishing tests and trainings to try and prevent this stuff from happening, but there is really no penalty for failing these tests.

Begs the question, why is the industry so hell bent on making so many new games female centered?

Because the ESG and D&I clowns have taken data from mobile platforms and then attempted to extrapolate it industry wide in order to mislead executives. It's essentially this:

Which is why it's always important to ask, where did this data come from and how was it sourced.

I think the most likely explanation is that women are a mostly untapped revenue stream. And if my sisters are anything to go by, they are more than willing to sell their soul for items, concerts, movies that they are invested in.

Games aren't much different. I'm surprised no one has to make a game with "hot guys" like the Bachelor or something targeted specifically at women. I guess at this point it would still be a major gamble, but who knows.

well I dunno....my takeaway is like live games really need to capture a massive amount of people not because "more people more money" per se, but because the vast majority of the people are not spending money or they spend money once in a while. so its more like chasing the statistical frequency of people spending than anything else.

You have no idea how convincing some malware can be.
Yep, which is where good multilayered anti-malware/phishing strategy comes in. Plus training. But that’s expensive and requires knowledgeable and highly paid security team.

Highly paid because if you are a good security specialist (pick a domain) you can get hired in non gaming companies which usually pay more and have better benefits.

It's called propaganda.

Male or female centered does not matter that much. What is relevant is to preach the postmodernist message. It's easier with a female lead character but not truly necessary. I write fantasy and most of my protagonists are women, but they don't raise their fists and make angry faces. They even shave their armpits.

The mistake is to believe that this type of product is aimed at a female audience. It's just endogamic bullshit that neither boys nor girls like.

My guess would be because the growth potential of targeting women is much higher.
Unless they have metrics showing that having a female lead is making a significant number of men avoid a game, then it makes sense to try and get more women interested in gaming vs trying to get the remaining 20-40 years old men who still aren't interested in gaming.

It isn't.

This data comes many years after the flood of female leads and general feminism in gaming that occurred in the 8th gen. Whatever they're doing isn't attracting women either.

Every entertainment industry pretends like changing mediums and genres that guy's favor is going to bring in women, but women have their own preferences. Whatever women are here like things they way they are. At best, your audience demographics will stay the same. At worst, you will piss off and alienate the audience you already had.

I work IT at a major firm in North America. It really doesn’t matter how prestigious an employee, people will click anything.

Like…Anything.
Yup. I said it another thread but my company’s IT department will purposely send out emails testing peoples phishing skills. Then recap later on how many people did it plus a big warning and guidelines things about don’t fall for scams clicking shady looking links and emails.

Been here 10 years. Every recap shows the same kind of thing. Like 5-10 people out of the 150-200 people in my office always click them. Would be better if they also showed how many clickers are repeat offenders. Lol!

As for the male/female split, I’m thinking a lot of game companies are going female leads hoping to get extra sales. Historically data has shown there’s lots of female gamers but they skew to Sims and puzzle games kind of stuff. There were detailed data charts years ago on GAF where genres like shooters and sports were like 3% women.

So the urge has got to be there to get more women over the other genres and best way to do it is female leads. And the hope is the female character is good enough to get more women buying it and more importantly walking the fine line to not piss off the guy gamers. Have fun with that balancing act.

This is for the Playstation audience. Not everyone. And 78% of the PS audience didn't give their gender. The female percentage is still going to be lower if you compare it to Nintendo though. I'm assuming Playstation wants to grow that base to something like 25%.

This has to be false data. I WAS ASSURED THAT 50% OF THE MARKET ARE GIRLBOSS GAMERS!!!

That's for Nintendo.

We have a few more people at my company than you (230) and about 15-20 or so people always fail our phishing test too. It's funny how the percentages are the same for us and we don't even know each other lol!

I'd like to believe there's more female leads on games because they have a different perspective and they've earned the role with their point of view\skills while working at that company for years. I don't think most are doing it as a PR move. That'd be stupid in my opinion.

I would estimate 80% of the players on Fortnite use female skins. I suspect 95+% of the player base is male.

Males might be significantly more willing to play as a female than vice versa.

Totally agree. I'd bet there's way more guy gamers playing Tomb Raider, Bayonetta, Mirrors Edge and Perfect Dark than female gamers.

Ransomware attackers target everyone. Someone at Insomniac was dumb enough to click on the bait.

I didn't notice Fortnite anywhere on those slides. Strange to omit that.
This…why is arguably the largest live service not anywhere on here? I wonder if it is because Epic secured some sweet deal due to the size of Fortnite and Sony is worried about someone reverse engineering the details from the data…just speculation on my part.

That just sounds crazy to me lol
Why? Some dumb fuck at Insomniac didn't make the mandatory modules for Sony Group about Cyber security.

Absolute dumb motherfucker, should've been laid off immediately, how come people in a Studio supposedly with a very high IQ commit such shitty mistakes.

You can grow a demographic, that's the only reason to invest if you believe there's potential.

They can want or believe in potential as much as they like, it isn't going to happen.

Do we work for the same company? We run these same tests and auto enroll repeat offenders into mandatory training. They still never learn.

People here do not understand how strong Social Engineering is and has become. Phishing is no longer just bad spelling and weird font. The strength and complexity of attacks is exponentially increasing even further assisted by AI.

It doesn’t matter if you’re tech savvy or not, anyone can get fucked.

I think the Onika Tanya Maraj-Petty bundle did very well in CoD as well so yeah.. I don't see why they wouldn't push more female characters considering the demographic

Anecdotal evidence coming up. Every single woman I know who play video games prefer to play as a female character. No exceptions.
So that could actually be a good idea.

Problem is, these women also like when the female character is looking good. Meanwhile western devs seem to think a beautiful woman can’t be strong and needs to be somewhat uglified or masculine. And suddenly a good idea turns into a bad idea.

This is hilarious. I remember Sony saying it was 55-45 and I was like BULL FUCKING SHIT. 9:1 is more accurate. Hell, its probably inflated because of all the dudes identifying as female nowadays.
Exactly. Most of the women are on mobile these days just as we thought.
