Installed Hallow Knight Silksong because of Game Pass, now I understand

Great game, but it's long. You can easily be playing it for a month.

It's often on sale for like $5. Which means instead of owning it for $5, you're choosing to rent it for $30. Just saying.

Yeah, I'd genuinely have to call this one a masterpiece. And I say that who thought the original game was really more of a 7/10 sorta experience. This just nailed everything I wanted from a new game in the genre, and managed to be completely engaging all the way through... which is kind of insane considering how ridiculously long it is. My complaints about the first game - namely that the environments are same-y and kinda boring - were alleviated here, and I found the mechanics to be significantly more enjoyable overall.

It's definitely a commitment, and it is a tough game (in case that's a turn-off), but my God. This really delivered.

I simply have too many games to play, I don't want to replay anything

Game is great.. but after almost 100% (fuck that last masochist dungeon with the radiance) its not very replayable for me, just too much of a hassle

I liked it but it's too damn hard and frustrating. I did get reasonably far in to it (in Act 2) but even just trying to get to the super hard boss fights, getting around the areas full of poison and spikes and maggots and enemies that hit you for double damage, was becoming a chore and I dropped it.

Silksong is almost as good, but has some missteps compared to the first game I think is still better overall. If you aren't turned off by lategame difficulty when you're finished with the first one, play Silksong next (not right away). It does improve on so many things, but the difficulty is definitely tuned to be more frustrating.

Did you play the original? Love silksong, but still find the original had a better setting/mood.

Both are Masterpieces

It's better than Hollow Knight. Absolutely fantastic game, and tough as balls. I loved my time with it.

Amazing game, well balanced, no bullshit, no 2 masks damage for everything in the game, bosses are fair and they give lots of rewards, no bullshit runbacks, its a stellar game, way better than OG HK.

Yeah me too. Loved going down in Hollow Knight, wondering how deep that map could go. That sense of wonder was mostly missing during my time with Silksong.

But still loved the game. It's pretty good, been a long time since a game gave me sweaty hands lol.

Really? Silksong goes up. And up. And up.
And then, somehow, it goes deeper than where it started. Much deeper.

Silksong's map is something else. The way new areas are discovered by breaking an unassuming wall or ceiling is dizzying. No damn corner of the whole map is unutilized. If there's a black spot on your map, there's something there that you can reach somehow. It was exhausting, and magnificent.

I've played neither. At this point would you say it's better for me to just play the sequel only, if I'm not going to really play both?

No, start with Hollow Knight, which is a masterpiece too and IMO, a notch better than Silksong. Also shorter and easier. Silksong without having finished HK may become a really hardcore experience. Devs clearly made the game with veteran players in mind.

Best advice right here. Thanks for making it clear.

I went back to HK after Silksong and it feels terrible to control. The sequel is more refined in many ways. And not really tougher, I think. There are more choices to make the game easier than in HK, but you have to dig around the map and find the tools you need.
