"Instant death" attacks suck

in a turn-based multi-character rpg instant-death attacks are fine.

persona3 was totally lenient, with items that prevented you from dying, as well as early access to immunity, and the ability to pretty-much always kill monsters with these skills before they had a chance to attack you.

nocturne was much harder, and required you to acquire immunity on the main character to prevent an unlucky surprise attack from ending your game before you could do anything. proactive swapping out of demons and such was such a critical part of the game anyway - i very-rarely felt that the game was unfair (i also had the luckiest character ever in order to prevent surprise attacks).

with resurrection so cheap and easy in most jrpgs, i mostly don't find insta-death attacks unjust at all. they force you to assess danger and defend yourself. i'm not sure i've played a game this gen where they existed and weren't relatively easy to deal with with options that were available to you.

I would say as a Spy in TF2... the backstab is the most pleasurable kill in the game. That or a crit rocket. :lol

But as far as RPG insta deaths.... I can see your point.

If you care about dying in P3 then you're playing it wrong. I lost at most 10 minutes of progress when I died.

So you're saying that I'm playing the game "wrong" because I don't run off and save every five to ten minutes? I think that says a lot about the game, actually.

My first thought was "Someone's been playing Nocturne!"
Ditto. That game was unforgiving as hell, not only for the instakill spells, but because you would run up against enemies that were half your level late in the game that would wipe you out completely if you happened to not have resistance to a certain element. It's been a while, but I'm pretty sure one time I was around level 40, and I was running around some place I hadn't been for double digit hours, and some low level 20 enemies threw out fire spell after fire spell and before I knew what happened it was game freaking over.

Somehow before I came in here I knew it was about Persona 3... later on (Floors 175+) you will get borked by these spells all the freaking time.

I think it sucks, but it's part of the game. Still... hate it.

I'm saying you're playing it wrong if you lose that much progress when you die. How can you die after fighting a boss? The teleport's right there! Also, if you don't want to lose progress in Tartarus, just don't fight ANYTHING until you get to a boss floor. When you get there you can save, then go back to lower levels to grind and just warp to the first floor whenever you want to heal/save again. Basically you can save whenever you want, which you can't if you try fighting your way up to every boss. What's worse, going down to save every 10-20 minutes, and then being able to instantly teleport to the next boss, or losing 45 minutes of work because you got Hama:d one floor short of the boss?

I haven't lost that much progress in a single time, but overall I guess it's a couple of hours. The boss battle was fairly easy though, the annoying part was dying after I had been grinding for a while due to hama from a new enemy. I usually try to reach the boss floor early, yeah, but it's mainly when I'm grinding I'm getting killed (and annoyed).

Right now I met three crying tables -- which are fairly easy since I know their critical spot. I bufud them all and yada yada, then one got some fire attack of which struck me (I was weak against it) and that started a chain of five fucking agilaos in a row. Thankfully I hadn't played more than 10-15 minutes now.

instant death usually comes with extremely low accuracy, therefore, they don't suck.

That's another reason as to why those attacks are a waste of space.

BG2 Vampires used to bug the hell out of me. They'd always level-death/kill the main character which was instant game over even though my cleric was standing on top of me.

Baten Kaitos have instant death. The final boss of Disc 1
Geldoblame
.

if you don't quickly raise one of your dead characters then he perform it again on another character too. That's two out of 3 that is if you withstand the beating using the last character. There's instant death resistant cards though.

Um, Homunculi? Sacrificial Idol?

In P3, I probably died more from being stupid (one time I forgot I had three lightning weaknesses on my team) or greedy than from instadeath... The ultimate boss though, that's another story.
