Man, I was hoping it was raised to answer what was going on with the XBLA brand! I'd be more than happy though if they just killed it entirely and the equivalent games would just be "Xbox Live Exclusive" or whatever they want to use to indicate you can only get the game as a download.
... And yeah, Satchel was right. If Sony tried to introduce a yearly fee this gen it'd have probably been one of the worst things you could do for PR, but the start of a new generation and with free games supplied? Much easier, doubly so if you go with free DLC too as they did with Killzone, making it feel more like I'm actually getting an MP service akin to subscription MMOs constantly adding content rather than just lifting the MP block.

You don't understand this, do you? This was probably only possible because of Microsoft's gigantic failure. They failed to deliver a console who can put pressure on the PS4, a console who can compete on the same level or even surpass the PS4. That's why Sony felt so comfortable with their offerings that they thought they can get away with payed multiplayer. And they did get away with it. So what you seem to enjoy here as a "told you so" moment and a "weakness of Sony" is in reality probably just the result of Microsoft's poor performance.

Of course they cost money. But it's all about unique features. If Sony was not able to compete because of higher hardware performance and a lower console price, they would need other unique features.

MS proved this gen that people are willing to pay for it in droves. Introducing that during the PS3's lifetime would have a been a misstep but, as Satchel in those quotes pointed out, the beginning of a new gen is the perfect time to introduce it. The slate is clean and people are more pliable to change (to an extent lol). No matter what the new Xbox's specs/price were, they were going to introduce it because it would have been money left on the table. I don't "blame" them. I don't mind paying for multiplayer, and I already am a PS+ member. And they said this when talking about the console price. Of course they make adjustments to their overall policies and take a look at what the competition is doing. They are not Nintendo.

Maybe they didn't want to confuse their customers with too many 180s so they will just keep the name?
Probably just referring to the fact that XBLA, DD "retail" games and Indies were no longer segregated. Probable just call it "Xbox Games" or some simple shit.
