Interplay announces Earthworm Jim 4 (no platform specified)

Doug sounded like he had some great ideas for the PSP remake when he started working closely with the team before the project went under.

If it's worth anything, I think his excitement for the new deal (he's been fighting to properly revive his character for years now) is a really good indication that we can get quality treatment of the Earthworm Jim character and universe for these new projects.

Interplay Entertainment Corp. (OTC Bulletin Board: IPLY) announced today that the company signed a partnership arrangement with Earthworm Jim creator Douglas TenNapel to relaunch the videogame icon.
This is all I needed to hear.

I am a believer! :D

Prepare to be severely dissappointed if you're hoping for 2D. :(

It already sounds like he has no interest in going back to 2D. He claims that while there will always be fans who nitpick character redesigns, he's created a new design for his characters that are both faithful to the core ideas of the style while modernizing them. He says his new designs aren't "too muscular for the cartoony fans and not too cartoony for the action fans." Take that as you will, but this man clearly has a vision for bringing his character to the modern age of gaming and I trust him to do it right.

I didnt know there was an actual Earthworm Jim "3".

BTW, what happened with the PSP remake of the original? i remember that last year the port was almost done.

I'll take anything but mobile. I wonder if Tommy T is attached to the project -- E3 2005 we spoke about it at the indie-games party and he mentioned that he and several other of the original devs were working on bringing Jim back.

Super-excited! woot, woot!

Dave Perry and his team lost their funding when Atari restructured their US division back in 2006. Perry left Shiny and the PSP project was cancelled.

If there's justice in this world, this game should be 2.5D with Naruto PS3 level of cell-shading...

...too bad it's probably going to be a mediocre 3D platformer :(

That would be a dream come true.

Because it tried 3D and sucked

So what? That has no bearing on this new game.

You people are acting like the EWJ formula can't be done in 3D. Action/adventure/platforming... yeah, look how awful Ratchet and Clank turned out...

IR Shooting + Waggle head looks good on paper. I hope Interplay plans on bringing back Clayfighters as well. The character designs in the clayfigher games carry a lot of charisma and charm to them.
