Interview with Persona 5 director Katsura Hashino

Oh man, I'm totally feeling this game right now. I've got absolute faith in P-studio's ability to deliver a kickass game.

I actually would be surprised if there was anything on the level of P4G in P5. It seems like they've mostly left the mega-skeev to the re-releases focused toward super fans. Like, for instance, I really don't expect a scene in P5 like the one in P4G where everybody's all up ins on Naoto's breasts.

Wasn't that scene in the original game?

Back in my day fan service meant you could hadouken as MegaMan.....

It was, but with much less *detail*.

To elaborate, it was just a text conversation in the original. P4G expands that (and the part afterwards where the guys stumble into the wrong bath) into a full anime cutscene.

Hopefully they try and keep the game serious instead of going overboard with the waifu stuff.

In general my hope is that P5 just has less goofiness in general. The people who call the P4 cast "the Scooby-Doo gang" aren't far off. Anything that makes Persona 5 less Scooby-Doo will probably be an improvement.

I'm not sure I like the idea of the characters being something that is brazenly against what is considered "good". Maybe I'm just reading too much into his words but if he does go with what I'm thining I hope they see some kind of repercussion for their actions or perhaps grow as characters by realizing why things are the way they are understand that some things can hurt other people instead of being straight up juvenile delinquents. His comments seem very anti-japanese.

I absolutely adore this game's theme. I hope I can get a little courage to break free from my own chains. TT_TT

Watch it just end up going the Robin Hood route in terms of "the righteous theives working for the benefit of the masses against the corrupt" sort of thing.

I'm pretty sure you're not sorry especially when making wide sweeping generalizing statements like that.

I really like Hashino. The bit about creating a game that can give some people the courage they need to act, that's a nice reason to make a game. I wish and hope for the best.

Very interested by themes he was talking about. Quite deep rooted ideas, will be pleasantly surprised if he can convey those themes successfully.

First answer made it sound like it's gonna be Winter/Spring 2015/16

What would be interesting is that will trying to break away from the values of the previous generations, they end up cuasing some problems for others while trying to "free" themselves. They are, in a sense, repeating the mistakes of the past even though they are rebelling. Unintended consequences and all that.

Hashino: Things are really coming along and we’re starting to hit our quality benchmarks in terms of what goes into the game, so at this stage, we’re hard at work building the game and fleshing it out. We’re just as eager to bring this game out finally so they can enjoy what all we’ve been working on and day by day, we’re getting closer to the finish line. It’s just going to be a little while longer now before it’s here.

Atlus pls. When is this game releasing?

Whats fan service? I've always wanted to know wtf that means lol

They service fans

With breasts and panty shots

More direct answer it's basically unnecessary sexual elements added to media or games that are in place just to pander to certain demographics aka "fans".

Referencing Lupin was possibly the best thing I could have read. Very pleased with the way this is all turning out.

I knew it! That trailer really did give off a strong indication that there was some inspiration from Lupin III :)

No you had it right with the initial sentence. Fan Service is not always TnA

That's what it means most of the time. That being said it doesn't necessarily have to be sexual. The Citadel DLC for Mass Effect is fan service as well. Doesn't fit the with the tone of the rest of the game, doesn't contribute anything to the plot and is just there to have fun interactions with the characters.

I was going with the "pop culture" definition. When someone says it on gaf that is typically what they are referring to.

Although, fan service can obviously be just nods to pop-culture, cameos from other media and games, or anything a fan would be able to recognize and enjoy if we are going for a literal definition.

Hashino: I don’t think it’s a stretch to say in this day and age that there are a lot of people out there who feel like they aren’t moving forward, that they have no future, and carry a lot of weight on their shoulders every day. They’re stuck between a rock and a hard place, emotionally speaking; on the one hand, they might not be keen on living by the same rules and values that defined previous generations, while still lacking the will to go out and actually break those barriers down themselves. That dark side of society is a central pillar to the game we want to make with Persona 5.

This sounds really damn interesting and I'm glad some developers are trying to express fresh themes with video games. Catherine already did something fresh and I'm excited for P5.

Ok so, will the story focus on a gang of high school/university students like 4 (and may e all of them, I only played 4) or do we get something new?

Have they ever said if it was going to be turned based or not?

They haven't said anything about the combat as of yet, but the combat scenes in the trailer strongly hint at a turn based system. E.g. the characters' icons change when it is their turn to act.
