Introducing Britain's latest fashion craze: Steampunk

Those coats look great, a friend has a similar one (although the double buttons are fake). Not steampunk at all though. Start adding random metal components on top of them, then we're talking.

Only a select few can pull off that look.

I don't think so (except for the white collar, that looks a bit gaudy). It's inspired from military design, that is meant to look good on almost anybody. Being strict and quite functional gives those clothes their own aesthetics, that doesn't depend as much on the shape of the body wearing them.

*and Germany*

anything that brings back top hats, bowlers and actual clothing is okay in my book.

Don't care what anyone says, this guy looks awesome.

What's old about it? It isn't saying that steampunk is a new style, just that major retailers will stock the style and it's becoming very popular in the fashion industry.

Steampunk fashion came around and more or less died years ago. I don't know if it's the paper reporting the news or the UK fashion industry who's to blame here, but someone's rather LTTP.

Was it a major fashion trend or people wearing it at an anime convention?

It wasn't a major fashion trend then and whatever that rag believes it's not gonna be a big fashion trend now. The steampunk look is just a tad too out there to become huge.

For conventions, you mean. A cool look for conventions.

It looks good wherever you're sporting it as long as you actually put the time, money and effort into making it look good.

China Mieville's New Crobuzon series is the only manifestation of steampunk I've seen with an ethos other than looking "cool".

That's because Mieville's a real life socialist. So he puts the punk into the steampunk.

The majority of the cosplay types are dressing as Lord Copperbottom-Smythe the Adventurer or Doktor Heimlichmanuever the Mad Scientist.

First time I went to one I was so excited. Then I got there and looked around and the excitement disappeared.

Working at one of the biggest Renaissance Faires in the country is basically the best job I've ever had, but it was a really enormous and well done place, and the...smaller ones I've seen in other places have always seemed lackluster.

I've only been to one so I wouldn't know how it would compare. It was the one here in southern California, L.A. specifically.
