Steampunk looks like what happens when nerds try to turn history into fan fiction.

Only a select few can pull off that look.
It's a cool look as long as you put the effort into actually making it look good, but yeah, old news are old.
What's old about it? It isn't saying that steampunk is a new style, just that major retailers will stock the style and it's becoming very popular in the fashion industry.
Some fashionistas have been sniffy: one dismissed steampunk as "what happens when goths discover brown".
Was it mainstream in the US?
Steampunk fashion came around and more or less died years ago. I don't know if it's the paper reporting the news or the UK fashion industry who's to blame here, but someone's rather LTTP.
The entire article feels more like a promo for Ibm's trend predicting engine :S

Was it a major fashion trend or people wearing it at an anime convention?
For conventions, you mean. A cool look for conventions.

Worst part of working at a Renaissance Faire

China Mieville's New Crobuzon series is the only manifestation of steampunk I've seen with an ethos other than looking "cool".

.In public this fashion doesn't work, because it requires an aesthetic context around it that just doesn't exist anymore. It looks out of place alongside modern architecture and modern design. It can be cool looking in a vacuum though.
Working at one of the biggest Renaissance Faires in the country is basically the best job I've ever had, but it was a really enormous and well done place, and the...smaller ones I've seen in other places have always seemed lackluster.
This is the only steampunk i know

What would be cooler, everyone in the world wearing steampunk stuff or dressing like they are from Final Fantasy?

The end of the world would literally be better than either of those scenarios.
