Introducing the next big thing in metal music

Not bad but not a band I would listen to a whole lot of. So I wouldn't mind them not becoming the next big thing. I don't keep up on metal news too much anymore, I just listen to what's out there, but a coworker got sent some of Alkaloid's music recently. Hopefully they become the next big thing in metal because all of their songs that I heard were incredible.

Was digging it until I was harassed by shrieking voices. Does anyone know something like this but only as an instrumental?

ANu metal is a subgenre of metal, though I'm not sure I'd call anything past Meteora nu metal.

Nu metal is alternative rock with elements borrowed from groove metal and hip-hop. There are some nu metal bands that you could argue are pretty close to "real" metal, but Linkin Park isn't one of them.

Deafhaven is the first metal band in years to actually have something to say.

If metal was more mainstream, you'd be hearing this a lot more.

As for the OP, the music was alright, but I don't think the vocal execution was there. I like that style of vocals, but I don't think it was done too well.

I don't understand what makes it any different to any other black / death metal of the last 10 years. If you think this is the next big thing then Abigail Williams should be a much bigger act by now.
Not saying it's bad, but it's hardly special. It's just a slightly screechier deathcore.

Honestly, I was hoping OP was going to tell me that Metalcore was getting a second wind beyond Still Remains latest album. :[

Okay, grandpa's/grandma's.

One doesn't normally jump into this kind of extreme metal. You work your way up from rock to punk to thrash, etc. By that point harsh vocals become a sort of second language where you are familiar with the dialect and can more easily make out what they are saying. Metal bands like The Black Dahlia Murder actually do have well written lyrics that add to the song if you know them.
Pfft, I jumped in at Cradle of Filth when I was about 13 because they had songs about crazy shit like Cthulhu and I ended up working my way down into lighter metal / hardcore from there. XD

Sounds like you're a fan of progressive bands with a bit of a cleaner sound. You might like The Contortionist.

Also Between the Buried and Me's new upcoming album is supposed to have primarily clean vocals. I'm really looking to it!

Yeah, these sound pretty good! The Contortionist is new to me. They sound great.

Damn, there's so much good music out there. I've pretty much given up on trying to keep up. Between video games,TV shows, and movies, I rarely listen to full albums anymore.

What about Liturgy? I don't even know if they really count as metal, but the influence is certainly there.

Liturgy tried to repeat Deafheaven's success but failed miserably, their last album is awful. Metal hasn't evolved much these years, but from time to time you see some very good releases, to me these are the best albums of the year so far:

Right now I'm intrigued (digesting) by this release:

Sounds like many other bands I heard before, not sure exactly why this is 'the next big thing in metal'. Also, terrible vocals.

Is there any new band that has Metallica levels of quality out there at the moment? Or even Pantera Vulgar Display of Power or Slayer Seasons in the Abyss quality?

Mastodon is the closest thing to that. They have a unique sound, while still being accessible, and their entire catalog is great. Their sound is a combination of sludge, prog, and southern rock.

Dude's a good singer. His screeching is good but i think (opinion alert) he needs to work on his growls, instead of that half-growl-thing. Great tunes btw!

Black metal with apparent screamo influence? (City of Caterpillar etc., not the lame stuff) I think that had its moment already honestly. Its probably as big as it's gonna get.

I was actually thinking black metal with post-rock and indie rock influences. Sunbather is essentially Local Natives gone metal, with bright melodic sections and occasional acoustic breaks.

thought it was pretty solid. next big thing is a funny hyperbole

almost as funny as all the people that clearly don't like or understand metal coming in to shit up the thread

Well this was ok but nothing special. And not digging those vocals. Not my type of growling. Vortex or Åkerfeldt has the best metal vocals IMHO

Metal is so awesome lol. I don't know any other type of music with so many sub genres. I feel like an odd man out though as I'm quite happy with a lot of "mainstream" bands (mastodon, bullet for my valentine, five finger, etc etc).

. . . Linkin Park isn't metal.

Exactly, It was.The first two albums are Nu Metal, a subgenre of Metal.

I love that sub genre, some bands like System of a Down and Deftones are more akin to the "classic" sound of metal. The other part of Nu Metal (Papa Roach, Limp Bizkit, P.O.D.) sounds more like Rock-Rap (the official tag is "rapcore").

nu metal bands sounded like nu metal between 1994 - 2003, then they all went separate ways. Linkin Park is electro-rock-pop now.

on-topic: I might need to get used to the vocals of the song... the instrumental part is very good.
