iOS 8 Using an abnormally high amount of cellular data?

Whoa - hadn't noticed but this is happening to me. My usage:

January: 587 MB
February: 1.2 GB
March: 1.5 GB
April: 1.1 GB
May: 2.5 GB
June: 1.7 GB
July: 1.1 GB
August: 1.6 GB

Pretty consistent. And suddenly...

September: 19.2 GB

Good thing I have unlimited data. So "Reset All Content and Settings" supposedly fixes this?

Have you checked which app has used the most?

Hmm. Sounds like iOS8 sucks.
Should I stick with 7?

it's buggy. I haven't had issues with it but some people have.
if you don't care about app extensions or the changes to messages, you could stick with iOS 7 till iOS 8.1 (or maybe another .0X release) shows up.

I noticed that, since the update, something has been using the localization service constantly.
The app that seems to be using the most data is facebook, so I disabled localization on it. Just to be sure, I decided to turn off 3G whenever I have wi-fi available.

I'm back from lunch. About an hour on wifi and an hour on cell usage since 11:07 am EST.

During my hour on cell I browsed the net for about 20 minutes. In total about 22mb used.

That's fine. Nothing unusual about those numbers. There were a few images in the mix on GAF. I also checked out Facebook and Twitter.

I expect the spike to come. My assumption is that iCloud is backing up despite the fact that I have the setting turned to off for Cellular. Not sure what time it's updating. iCloud says Yesterday but doesn't give me the time.

Edit: Smartglass 11.9mb. I was on it for about 3 minutes. Safari was only 4.5mb and it was the majority of my usage in that 20 minutes. MS, what are you doing!?

Had smartglass updated to ios 8?

The numbers aren't accurate.

My phone says I've used 26.3GB.

My Verizon app says I've used 2.3GB, which is correct. That's what I'm actually using and being charged for.

The usage statistics on the phone are actually from when you last reset the statistics. Not your current billing period with your carrier. I had a fright too when I saw 6.8gb.

Wtf, I've used over 500mb in the last two days. I usually average around 2gb a month.

I'm telling you it's real!!

I thought I had been resetting it each month, but when something becomes a habit like that, I can't really say if I actually did or just assumed I did.

26 would still be ridiculously high even if I had forgotten, since I consistently use 2-3GB/month.

I don't see the option described in the original post. When I go to settings > icloud, there is nothing that says "Documents & Data" anywhere. It has my name, then it says family. Then my storage. Then it just lists apps. There's "iCloud Drive", and under that there is an option for Cellular Data. Is that what I'm supposed to turn off?

Where are you guys seeing data usage on the phones? I only see battery stuff.

EDIT

never mind, I found it.

Yeah. Don't have Documents & Data either. I just turn off all apps except Find my iPhone.

Settings > Cellular > scroll down.

The data usage number listed on my phone was higher than what AT&T's website said it was. I reset the statistics, and will monitor things moving forward.

I also adjusted my plan when I got the new iPhone, adding more data to it. That sometimes skews the numbers some as well.

Still monitoring my data usage and so far everything is smooth sailing. No unusually large spike. I was going to do a complete reset of my phone and start it fresh but I think I'll leave it tonight and see if anything happens over the next 24 hours.

So about 24 hours after bringing this topic up I'm starting to wonder if the issue may be something else entirely.

I ended up using 151mb overnight after my reset at 11:07 am EST yesterday. About 100mb of that was an episode of Final Bosman that I thought I was watching on wifi but apparently my wifi had disconnected at some point. I know my connection didn't time out as my girlfriend was watching something on Netflix without issue. My phone just disconnected from a known hotspot.

There could be a million reasons for that and not necessarily an iOS issue. I didn't really see the problem on my iPhone 5S with 7 but then again I wasn't really looking for the issue.

I could be crazy but there could be something there.

The fact that other people have reported the issue makes me think I'm not crazy.

Wait another 24 hours

Yea something is jacked up. 1.5gb total. 502mb for safari. i am literally on wifi 99% of the time. No way in hell I've used that much. Also interesting that 22.5mb was for push notifications and I've completely disabled those for like the past year.

Can't you install a data tracker and see what in particular is using your data? At least narrow it down a bit.

Don't fall for the FUD.

I had ios8 on all my devices. Upgraded to iPhone 6 and havent noticed any increase in data usage. I just checked my usage two days ago.

It's probably just something wrong in the settings, either on the user end or in the OS. Resetting network settings should fix the latter. The is always extra usage in general after an update or new device due to iCloud syncing. If you have iCloud photo enabled, that would also increase usage.

I can't explain it but there was an unusual bump in data usage.

I have been fine since creating this thread though. Just checked now and I'm at about 600mb for the month so far. That's my usual usage.

Does this apply to wifi as well? My iPad 3 iOS 8.1 just drained itself to 0% battery in a day sitting in a drawer.

I have never even gotten a half of your data used email from Verizon, now I'm at 90% used. A lot of it is from downloading podcasts while in my apartment. For an unknown reason, the phone decided not to use my wireless signal and did it all through data. Also, I definitely had do not download podcasts using data checked, so that's cool. But even with that aside, my usage is through the roof for no discernible reason.

I told it to not use cellular data for podcasts and music and now I get a warning about how I set that every time I load either app. Very convenient stuff.

This is all right after I had to delete and uninstall iTunes because it's a piece of shit on PCs and refused to transfer all of my music I didn't buy from iTunes onto my new phone. Sorry, this is now just a general Apple software rant.
