iPhone 15 Pro Max - Resident Evil on external screen via USB-C

This thing cost a grand and a half and you are still playing games on a mobile phone.

The only people treating this like a serious gaming platform are fucking idiots with too much money.

Idc if people want to believe or not that consoles will go away sometime in the future but this argument is just stupid.

No one is going to pay a grand for a gaming console but they are already paying a grand for a smart phone and if just happens to play full Console games then the millions of people who ALREADY HAVE THE PHONES might not need or want to spend the extra money on a console.

Then in the way future when I'm either dead or near dying … our homes will have a small singular home server that runs everything in you house plus stream games to your TVs and devices since WiFi 15 will send 100 gigs a sec. And we will control this server with our cyber implants in our eyes that can also show the global AR network . 😱

How long until Apple fans start port-begging for Bloodborne?
The Office Lol GIF

unless these phones do power pass through which i highly doubt, gaming on them like this is a great way to kill your battery within a few months.
As Impressive as the demo is, I came to say exactly this.

It can't be good for the device but then again who will be routinly gaming like this on a cellphone costing this much. I'm sure the person who's able to afford this will have a dedicated gaming device in the first place.

ITT people have no idea how technology, thermals, wattage, APIs, and cost of development work.

Great proof of concept by Capcom getting this running on mobile. Apple has the tools to get games running on ARM, has image reconstruction and ray tracing hardware, but does Apple really want to compete with Nintendo in the handheld gaming market.

I might agree if it was also running at 60, but I'm pretty sure the footage was mostly 30. I think it was standard hardware.
But wouldn't it be running at 30fps if ray tracing was turned on? Just saying if it were running on the Switch successor and the rumors are true then using ray tracing would lower the frames per second if the game wasn't using DLSS as well. What we could've seen might be beta footage running on the Switch successor and they're getting use to those features, which would also explain why EVERY floor has reflections.

The markets are totally different; let's see how many $40-$60+ games are sold to garner support for more console/PC-like games.
This is what I'm waiting to see. More full games sold on cell phones. For example if the new Sonic Superstars was released on Iphone for the same price as what they are on console.

It is awesome that a little device runs advanced graphics like this.
Still, not gonna buy an Iphone for 1000 bucks as my PC is good enough.
I'm sure most people won't specifically spend the money on a phone for gaming. If they were already planning on getting the phone, then this is just a nice bonus. The more people have access to phones that can play "console/pc" quality games then the more that might affect people buying consoles/pcs, if they already have the capability to play available in their pocket.

Right now this is on Apple's higher end Pro models, but if they follow their past trends, then these same SOCs will be in the cheaper iPhone 16 (non-pro) models next year with the 16 Pro models improving performance. Non-Apple related Android devices are also continuing to improve graphics performance.

Well the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 can run demanding games longer before thermal throttling than the previous A16 Bionic flagship chip from Apple. Let's see if the A17 Pro can fare better than its lil bro once Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 arrives on the market. ;)

It won't due to the fact that Apple bought TSMC's entire 3nm wafer for two whole years. Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 will use a 4nm process, which will be good, but slightly slower and less efficient.

Amazing that people don't get that this is not about replacing consoles.

It's a tech achievement with many implications. Of course people playing a game like this on an iPhone are people that just want to put their phone to their limit or just don't have a console. However, few applications are as power hungry as AAA game. The fact that is running as well as it does (even considering is inferior to consoles) say a lot about the state of mobile computing.

ARM chips are powering datacenters as well. Why couldn't they be a viable option to other kind of devices? What about upscalling on TV's or even the innards of a more traditional gaming device.

It's really something to take note of but it is not a a direct threat to traditional gaming.

This is potentially HUGE for indie and AA studios. A phone with no fan or dock can achieve a stable 30 fps with a current gen AAA game over USB3.2. The only thing holding back iOS as a gaming platform at this point is culture - people don't see the point of buying full priced games from the app store. If that ever changes, watch out.

All of you who are brushing this off need to think about it more. Imagine the huge userbase this opens up. Rather than having to build an install base from nothing each new generation, imagine having access to anyone with an iOS device or Mac. All of the biggest problems with mobile games are being addressed - they are finally powerful enough, people are used to buying digital games through an app store, they have the ability to output to a display, gaming subs are a thing, there is full controller support and devs like Capcom are taking this seriously.

All Apple needs to do is partner with Capcom or another large studio and get one must-play release exclusively on Apple Arcade, and run a promo to get people to try it. And just like that, they're getting 30% cuts on any game sold from the app store and stealing marketshare away from Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo's platforms. Apple may not know gaming, but they can provide a platform and make nice with third parties, letting them handle content.

As usual I am heading in the opposite direction to everyone else. Everyone will be playing their games on the TV using their phone as their console, meanwhile I just got sunshine set-up on my computer and am streaming my games to my phone via moonlight.

This will give Switch some serious competition. Likely take away a huge chunk of Nintendos market. The games look 10x better and everyone has a phone. Console games launching day and date on this thing and its a wrap
Right. let me know when I purchase Tears of the Kingdom on my phone.

I'm not sure what's going on in the EU, but I thought they allowed 3rd party stores to be on iOS? Technically we can have Steam or gamepass/xbox store on there that can potentially bring an enormous amount of games on the platform without having to cut Apple that 30% off the top… just the way 3rd party stores have been operating on Windows for decades.

This is not about replacing consoles for godsake
Put Ur phone besides a ps5 or a series X , we should be happy that the tech is advancing not mock it.
I work in construction industry and I'll happily pay and play diablo 4 on my mobile instead of that money sucking abomination of a game called diablo immortal

Oh wow look they're the same price. And look at the price to fix that screen if you break it. $320 before tax. If you don't have insurance on your phone you're a fucking moron.

Between not throwing my phone around like a clown and using proper bumpers, I've only ever had one phone screen break in the past decade.

I don't think I'll ever pay for insurance for a phone.

A very good review for the A17 Pro here

MetalFX upscaling looks pretty promising (it uses the NPU):

The reviewer modified the config file of the RE Village demo and managed to unlock the FPS and did a quick comparison with the Steam Deck

The new iPhone 15 Pro gets hotter than the iPhone 14 Pro when using it in longer gaming session.

image.png

It also has the same thermal dissipation as the iPhone 14 Pro

image.png

The power efficiency has improved slightly vs the A16 (iPhone 14 Pro).

Technically the RE Village demo can run on an iPhone 14 Pro but you can get occasional crashes due running out of available RAM

And here's the 3dmark solar bay ray tracing test:

Mobile gamers don't pay for games do they? They've been socially enginered to just buy microtransactions and chase whales, fremium models and $1.99 games. Other than Square of course.

Sure, but are those stores going to be selling the iOS version of the game?

It's called a PC.
Apple didn't really have the cult back then. They did, but it was a few nerds and school admins. Now a days it's brainless valley girls.

Nightmare scenario is the opposite, that those games take over real games.

Look at all the mtx in western AAA games already.

Because somehow you are going to put your phone through a thosand power cycles in 90 days. The better argument is why would you play this on a smartphone to begin with. Probably makes sense for the 5 people who can somehow afford an Iphone 15 Pro Max and not a gaming console. Let's be honest... Most people will play this for 10 minutes to see how cool it is and never touch it again.

This is what I was thinking of when they said iPhone would be big for gaming. Let me hook it up to a TV and connect a bluetooth controller and I'll start to consider it. I mean yeah obviously I'm going to want to keep my phone relatively well up to date, so it'll already be in my possession, and I know my current phone can have many good games on it, but I'm not gaming on it because I don't want to to that on a tiny screen. Implement this kind of thing and then it can start competing with Switch.

Even if it is 720p 30fps it's impressive af it can run Village. That tells us portable consoles can be on equal footing as the stationary PS5/Series X almost. That's insane

And those people complaining about battery life is totally missing the point. It's not gonna kill the phone in 10sec. And even if it did it's still impressive it can run the latest game at all. Beside no one with brain is gonna game without a charger connected.

Not even close to PS4, which would be fine except this is a $1500 device or whatever. Not too worried about this killing consoles anytime soon.

Then you're stupid af. Look at how tiny the fkin phone is, and it runs the latest games. I.e a bigger device will definitely, and probably power more then a PS4.

Its not gonna kill consoles ofc, only a idiot would think that.

Mobile games rake in tons of money, not hard imagining some mobile gamer just booting up Village or whatever title.
Maybe this just me but I want play survival horror game in dark room with headset, not on my phone that get bunch of notifications that can ruin the atmosphere.

Most people play on the phone for distractions, not serious gaming, this is why games like candy crush is so popular on smartphones.

This is wild, a properly cooled iPhone 15 pro could reach Steam Deck levels? Its only a matter of time until someone creates a dock that cools, charges and connects the iPhone to a TV, paired with a Dual Sense controller it actually has a chance of being a worthwhile Switch like console.

Its times like these I wish Nintendo would re release old classics on mobile.

Its just that some folks feel threatened, after years of laughing at mobile phones, we're now reaching the point where it is technically feasible for AAA tier console games to run on mobile phones.

few years from now, all the kinks will be ironed out. The cooling, battery life, price etc, i wouldn't be surprise if a lowest end iphone 16 will be able to do so too 12 months from now.

Why would anyone want to play games like Resident Evil 4 on phone is beyond me.
My phone fits in my pocket. A switch or a steam deck does not fit in my pocket.

Lunch break, bus ride, plane ride, literally anywhere outside of my house. Having fast convenient access to a console quality game? Sounds good to me.

I suspect the iPhone SE 4 will launch Q1 2024 at $429 with the A16 Bionic. The SE 5 in 2026 with the A18 will be the one to watch out for. A 6.1" device that can play modern console games for less than $450. And the SE is constantly on sale for under $400, sometimes less.

With as deep a discount as the SE often gets, even if you never activate a line on it, it makes an excellent iPod Touch replacement. Now we are talking about putting big boy games on it? Apple may end up unintentionally opening up a new product category.

Maybe this is just me but I dont want to play games like RE4 on the bus or even on plane ride. I want play those games at home on my TV to give my full attention and properly enjoy it.

I dont even like playing handheld games outside because they always too much noise and I need to be aware of my surroundings to properly enjoy playing the game.

I enjoying playing portable on my bed before going to sleep other than that I much prefer playing games on big screen in my house.

Looking through the ole iPhone app store games. My God its just freemium get, get, get with in app purchases everywhere. This store is ruined and has been for decades. Apple isnt going to save it. No one is Going to fix it.
I was all looking forward to gaming on a cell phone and Im reporting that its all shit shit shit.
Its always been shit and always will be.
forget gaming on cell phones.
Yuck,
I feel dirty doom scrolling through all that muck.

That is the only reason we're even discussing about it.
It's over 1000$ mobile tech that has reached the level of a decade old non mobile device.
It hasn't reached PS4 level graphics yet. PS4 was considered a pretty modest or even weak hardware wise by so called internet graphics enthusiasts.

Iphone 15 pro max is no doubt impressive. But let's look at a different example. PSP which was released in 2004 at a price of about 300$( I don't remember correctly) and it easily did superior graphics than PS1 which was the 9-10yrs old prior home console. Almost 2 decade later, an expensive enthusiast level portable smart device isn't able to out perform a decade old home console. So that part isn't all that impressive to me.

The difference between the situation now and your example is, the PSP was build as a gaming console, the iPhone is not.

All the hardware in the PSP is there to support or enable it's gaming capabilities.
The iPhone is not designed as a mobile console but has it as a nice addition.

There's only so much they can do without active cooling. Keep in mind this is on 3nm.

PSP was basically PS2 games at a slightly lower res.

I'm in construction industry with alot of downtime , a phone that can play games is a godsend for me ,
If I'm in an Uber a bus or a plane imagine playing diablo 4 for a few dungeons that would be the best thing ever
