Do you really even need to ask? I can't believe I'm going to have to PAY Apple, to fix their own mistake ... I havn't got mine yet, debating if I should just give it the flick and hope for a case re-design.

My first iPhone thread...extremely entertaining so far. Apple fanboys really put the gaming side to shame :lol

When Nintendo found out that people were being freakin' idiots and hurling their Wiimotes into their television screens, they provided free replacement wrist-straps and eventually offered up-to-4 free Wiimote condoms. If this is an endemic issue with the iPhone 4, I would hope Apple would follow that example. I have no desire to pay $30 for an ugly strip of rubber that costs pennies to manufacture.

To the people who have the "bars problem" are you also having a problem with dropping more calls than usual or losing data coverage?

Mine seemed to go away after the first day (when I was dropping calls like crazy). Hopefully it stays this way for my phone and happens to others as well.

Judging by Job's response, I doubt they'll give them away. Depends on how much this blows up, but I don't think Jobs likes to be proven wrong.

Oh i see

I like where Steve is going with this. I mean obviously he continues to provide excellent hardware to the masses for pennies on your dollar and yet some go out of the way to blame such a thing as cell reception on Apple hardware where clearly AT&T gets a free pass correct?

Simply amazing.

Steve Jobs said himself it's a non-issue and to change the way you hold the phone. There won't be a case redesign OR free bumpers incoming.

holy shit, what if this is the reason he screwed up on stage in his conference? :lol :lol jobs you're holding it wrong!!

Is was thinking the same thing. I need to rewatch the video. That would be amazing :lol

This isn't AT&T's fault at all. It's the Apple engineers who designed the phone.

Wrong...

If this happened in all phones you'd have a case, but it doesn't, so you don't.

I can replicate the issue, but I can't see it ever affecting me in real life. I use the earbuds when talking on the phone. I held the phone up to my ear in such a way that I'd complete the circuit but it was uncomfortable... I don't know how this will come up other than a "cannot unsee", or I guess in this case, "cannot untouch" type of situation.

MS did the same thing initially with the 360.

If there's enough negative publicity, their hand will be forced.

Here now is Apple's official response, which I present without comment.

Gripping any mobile phone will result in some attenuation of its antenna performance, with certain places being worse than others depending on the placement of the antennas. This is a fact of life for every wireless phone. If you ever experience this on your iPhone 4, avoid gripping it in the lower left corner in a way that covers both sides of the black strip in the metal band, or simply use one of many available cases.

Your transformation from Android/Nexus One fan to Apple fanboy has been extremely entertaining.

Yes ... everyone uses earbuds ... and everyone has the same sized hands, etc.

wtf >_<

Having dabbled with Android on the 3GS it would be a decent solution.

so if I hold the phone in my palm so that I'm only touching glass its fine. full signal.

If I take my fingertip and put it on top of the black seam bottom left it dies on me. For some reason top seam is fine. if I put my fingertip on either side of the seam its fine, but over the top its not happy.

Hardware issue, be it a design or manufacturing problem, this is not normal, its not rare and its not acceptable.

welp, if thats the best response they can give I'll be weighing my options heavily when this thing gets close to launching in canada. ridonkulous

lol, I don't care what Steve Jobs says, if this really is the problem it seems to be then it is an issue that requires some kind of fix from Apple. I'm not ready to throw all my Apple products out the window over this potential problem but fans of their products and services have to let the company know they are/would be disapointed with no action on Apples behalf.

Oh, telling me to hold my phone differently when making calls or using the web is not an acceptable solution (unless they packaging clearly states I have to hold the phone a certain way in order for it to work)

Lets hope this problem is either not widespread, or action can be taken quickly.

My phone has the issue and it can be reproduced on command as in the videos.

The Jobs response on this is incredibly disappointing. This doesn't appear to be sprung on them today, either, as they have known about this at least since before Mossberg filmed his review and asked them for comment.

I would've been willing to accept a "hold on, let us look into it" response to let them deal with it for a few days, but a virtual "u mad bro?" via Jobs's iPad isn't sufficient.

While it's amusing, I don't buy the bumper conspiracy. Apple was probably just tired of Griffin and the other case makers making a killing when an Apple-branded case, no matter how simple, would be an insta-sale for a lot of people.

Take it back to the shop ? Call Apple ? Consumer choice ? Moan on gaming forum ?

If nobody spoke up about potential problems how the hell is the wider community supposed to find out about these kind of this?

Don't panic, I'm sure Apple wont go broke over this ..

All of the above?

I live about an hour away from the Apple store and the phone reps had no response when I called them today; they basically said they had no replacement phones to work with.

We'll see what happens the next week as Apple gets more of these out and then I'll take a drive to the genius bar and see what they say.

I don't plan on owning an iPhone any time soon (pretty much only because I won't go AT&T), but this is really fucking ridiculous. I've owned plenty of cell phones and have never had this issue with any of them. To suggest that people should not hold their phone a certain way is a totally unacceptable response to this problem. I never think about how I'm holding my phone......I just hold it. To have to always remain conscious of how I'm holding my phone lest the signal fades or the connection dies or something.....total deal breaker for me.

-edit-
oh, well if the bumper thing solves the problem then that's fine I guess, although still kinda shitty.

Remaining calm, breathing slowly, and not jumping to conclusions would be a start. If your new phone works great, then great. If it doesn't work great, take it back and ask for a replacement or your money back. It's pretty simple isn't it ?

I mean there are even people here who don't own iPhones that are outraged.

I'm mostly just angry at the response from Steve Jobs.

Apple is telling the consumer they are holding the phone wrong because of their design.

Thats some big balls.

I was convinced this was the perfect phone, and planned on trying to pick one up tomorrow, but now this killed it for me. I'll try it at the store for myself.

There's some vague hope if there's people who don't have issues.

yeah, let’s go back to that iPad launch video, shall we?

“There is no right way or wrong way of holding it. I don’t have to change myself to fit the product. it fits me”

I can’t help but smile when shit like this happens.

Not sure if I’d be smiling if I had just bought one and had this problem, though :lol

What a ridiculous response from Apple. That's a fact of life? I can hold my 3GS with my ass cheeks if I so choose and I don't repeatably lose signal.

We're going to need confirmation of that via YouTube.

This is all well and good but its still important for people to be able to make informed decisions on their purchase (if they dont already own one) and to be able to read any potential problems. It does suck that fanbois from both sides will fill this thread with crap (as is the way of the internet) but personally I think threads like this can be the best starting places when looking for information and sharing experiances when these kind of things happen.

I would guess this thread will contain alot more information on the actual problem than anyone would get from the apple store or the retail store they bought the phone from.

looks like it's a design flaw, i don't find it surprising as I had similar problems with the iPod's wifi, reception is really bad.
