iPhone 4 plagued with antenna reception problem; hardware design to blame

Or they can just wait a couple days, and the media will have moved on and forgotten all about this.

But I hope they address it, however I have no plans of RMA'ing my perfectly fine iPhone 4, so if they want us all to ship them someplace for a couple weeks, count me out.

But people won't know, the damage will have been done. If the average joe that doesn't keep up with tech blogs online hears only that there's problems with the new iPhone then it could cause pretty significant long term damage. It doesn't matter that what the lady said was greatly exaggerated, just that if a lot of people out there are thinking there is a major issue it becomes a bigger issue for the Apple name, IMO.

Yes it does, just not nearly as much. Your hand will always absorb some of the signal.

And the fucking word is LOSE, people. I will never understand that one. Forgetting a letter I get, but adding one, and creating a word that already exists?

definitely not the case.

I'm aware of that slide and I'm considering calling "bullshit" on it. Notice how the slit on the right is fake. If the top and right separations are simply there to allow the black slits of each tiny antenna to be exposed, it makes sense.

Furthermore, there was that article from that guy who makes cellular antennas. He said that the FCC doesn't allow cell antennas to be at the top of handsets anymore. If that slide were true, it wood be in violation of FCC regulations. On the other hand, if that tiny black slit in the bottom left of the phone is the only cell antenna, it would be in compliance.

really?

Seals off and wouldn't allow for moisture or grounding with human skin contact.

Right...but wouldn't it eventually flake off after a few days? So you'd have to reapply it numerous times weekly.

I haven't dropped my phone, haven't placed it in my keys pocket, and it's somehow managed to get three scratches on the display glass. I'm so mad about this product.

But but but it's glass! The patty cake baker man will educate you on your obvious missconception.

Acrually, I'm surprised.

The front glass? :/
yep.

so, as it stands, I have:

- a phone that drops calls in the manner a normal human being holds the phone.

and

- a scratched front screen from sitting on a table, being in my hands, and traveling in an empty pocket.

not happy at all.

And the relevance of that is?.. if there is a functional slit on the left side they will put another on the right for design reasons, symmetry etc. Anyway, this whole thing is being blow up a bit..

I think you’re misinterpreting some things. that article from the antenna guy said that it was OK to have them radiating outward, which is not the same as having them bundled at the top, directed toward the face.

really, how the hell can a tiny slit of non conductive material be an antenna for all this? your original theory just doesn’t make much sense. the slits are separations, not antennas.

plus, they could’ve used aluminum for the casing and not steel if they weren’t going to use the sides as antennas.

Not to be rude to those who got scratches but...screen protector? I got my 3g and didnt even touch it without a screen protector. Got a 3gs and did the same, even after i saw the tests where you can scratch it with a key and nothing happens.

I plan on getting my 4 and putting a protector on it before i even touch it.

I've had an iphone in my pocket with no screen protector for three years and never had a scratch. It's all relative.

Tobor said:
How deep is the scratch? I have a feeling the oleophobic coating might be the problem.
they're light surface scratches, so maybe that's it. it still infuriates me that a touted super-durable material can't withstand a pocket, hands, and a table.

Same here. My 3GS is in my pocket all the time. No case, no screen protector.

Have you relaxed and tried to rub one out? Maybe that’ll help a bit.

2 years and running on my 3g rollin commando in im right front pocket, 2 very light scratches on the screen. screen protectors are ugly imo.

Are you one of those people who, for some odd reason, places your phone face down on the table? If there's something you can't see on the table there it can scratch it when you put it down, or if you get a call and it starts vibrating for a call.

But people love to put their phones face down.

I'll never understand why they don't put them on tables face up.

i dont even notice my screen protector anymore. but its not as ugly as a scratch

also im a little happy on the inside that apple is having this big of a problem (front page cnn big as posted above) because now people will quit acting like they are perfect and how microsoft is the only company with problems. But im also a little sad the white one isnt out for awhile :(

Good Lord, when has this ever been true? I feel like there are way more people yelling "Apple isn't perfect, dorks" at the clouds than there are real people who actually think they are perfection.

Real life is not the GAF and MacRumors forums.

The EVO antenna is at the top, next to the dual flash.

absolutely not. how will I see who's called or texted me without picking the phone up?

no one really acts as though Apple is "perfect”.

they act as though Apple makes very desirable products.

Apple has already had media and consumer problems with iPod batteries, imac screens, laptop GPUs, iPhone price drops, iPod nano scratches, etc, etc…

life goes on. oobladi, ooblada.

That's the same reason I put CD/DVD/BD data side up when a case isn't available...but then that can expose it to dust and other elements. There's no winning.

Was talking to Raistlin about this...who is left-handed. I suggested he hold it with his left hand, and he got confused and said he doesn't want to hold the phone in his right hand up to his left ear.

Raistlin, you also have a right ear. :lol

Read my previous post on the matter jackass.

I have hearing loss in my right ear :\

okay so I just got back from the store with mine, pretty pissed...

Reception actually seems *worse* which is saying something. I live in the bay area, and in my apartment its always been trash, but doesn't seem to be *any* better.

Then, whenever I hold the phone in my left hand as I would to browse the web or do ANYTHING on the phone besides calling, the signal drops on queue. What a fucking moronic problem.

I'd rather take my chances with flying air particles than slapping my screen onto a desk though. That's just me, the people I see do it think nothing of it.

Oh, I thought you were suggesting that left-handed people are incapable of holding something in their right hands, or at the very least, incapable of hearing from the opposite ear.

If you did not know that is was gonna work, then why did you buy it? :lol

the screen does look fantastic though, really quite amazing to see. Not all bad!

And PS this is coming from a huge mac fan, I do a LOT of development for iphone/ipad (www.proximalabs.com), so these signal problems are really upsetting to me. I've been considering android for a while now and might suck up the cancellation fees and switch once droid X comes out, assuming the signal quality over the next few weeks stays about the same.

I just posted this, but I do iphone development. I need one regardless, but I also would love to use it as my primary phone. Not sure that will be the case, now.

Also, prior to release there were reports that the glass housing would improve reception.

The solution is clear. You must move and rent a new apartment to accommodate your new godphone. Even if you end up in the ghetto, this is a requirement.

iphone 4.1 update will remove the ability to see how many bars you have
Yeah soon Apple will implement Service | No Service marker and do away the signal bar meter all together because less is more.

Just like Youtube ratings.

It's not really funny, dude. A lot of people just want a phone that works, and are stuck in a hard place right now. It doesn't say much about your character that you're laughing at others' misfortune.

You got 30 days. Return it.

WTF? I don't think that is true at all.

A lot of people have posted in here that their phones haven't had a problem.

True, though some that initially posted that they were in the clear have retracted their comments.

This is going to get worse before it gets better.

<GASP> What, and cover up all that brilliant, magical, super-precise industrial design?!?

You will wear rubber gloves and like it, peon!
