Is 2008 a "make or break" year for Sony?

Seriously, :lol at this post. I'm sorry, but you're an idiot if you think something otherwise.

EDIT: Sony will make a PS4 most definitely. But if let's say Sony stops with video gaming, I'll stop gaming too. Where Sony goes, I go.

WTF seriously? Thats just flawed since most games Ps3 owners are playing are the same games 360 owners are playing.

Nope, there is just a lot of delusion in the sony fan camp.
So Sony fanboys keeps having illusions about the PS3 getting AAA-titles 2008?

Yes, all exclusive 2008 titles will come to the 360, right? Get the hell out of here.

EDIT: Thank god the 360 has a BD-drive. OH-FUCKING-WAIT.

Wii is more like a grand canyon.

In the road, I mean.
I was referring to low ps3 sales as the bump, not wii sales. I guess they're kind of one in the same though if you consider wii is stealing a substantial amount of would-be ps3 owners.

I think you have to define "making it".

I think 2007 was the make or break year for having a realistic shot at being #1.

2008 is probably make or break in terms of whether they can still turn this into an overall pretty profitable system. Essentially this is the year it cements itself as either the N64 or the Xbox in financial terms (that's in financial terms).

You can't fucking read either and sales tell otherwise. AC ,CoD4, FIFA 08, Madden 08. Its obvious which games Ps3 owners are playing.

You don't own a PS3?
Not anymore no, their exclusives dont really interest me at all, so I sold my old 20 gig for 360 games, I do however play once in a while at my cousins house.

Nope.

2008 will be a great year for Sony, given their titles, but it's certainly not make it or break it. They proved this year that they're not 'doomed' like some would be lead to believe; they're already a viable competitor in the next-gen arena.

2008 is where they need to gain share in the NA market, and given the titles that they have, this will likely be of no problem.

correct answer

No. Already broken.

Wow. Well, on second thought, with drones like this around, what could go wrong?

Not if Sony is still losing money on each console sold. Why continue to lose money on each console when they could drop there gaming division entirely and focus on TV's, BR, and other electronics?
Or next gen they could make a console that isn't sold at a loss. The Playstation name has built a good reputation(for the most part). There's no reason to just ditch it.

If the PS3 can't outsell the 360 in the US holiday of '08, it probably never will.
We'll see how many PS3s MGS:4 can move when it gets released. Mid to holiday '09 for FF is probably too late to make a significant difference.

Is this even a debateable question?

Well . . . the PS3 won't totally die since the Blu-Ray will save it, but this year will determine if it is 3rd or distant 3rd.

Wrong Seiken now, perhaps?

Oh yeah, and I bet many people would continue gaming if Nintendo stopped. And don't tell me Nintendos first party studio's so much greater than Sonys'.

Purposively avoiding great games just because they don't come out on a Sony system? Is being a lemming really that fun?

Fanboys who think games aren't fun unless they're on their system of choice are really annoying.

It's OK, he's just having a mini-meltdown. We've all been there. :lol

People have been gaming without Nintendo for more then a decade..

I'll stop now anyway. I just thought discussing something in a non-discussionable-thread would be fun.

the second correct answer.

MGS4 will do just fine, but the nonstop FUD and baseless rumors of a port (besides it being stated "if you want to play mgs4 you have to get a ps3") will affect sales.

If you're favourite athlete (if your are into sports) was traded, would you not root for that team?

sony is doing fine

they're way behind and their crown has been usurped. but the ps3 has a new day ahead. not not mention the psp isn't going anywhere anytime soon

I don't know about that, but I can say that I enjoyed PS2 RE4 much more than GC RE4 :).

MGS4 will do well, this one has some of everything,

I can see that you are being defensive, and I'm sure there will be a PS4 too, but it's pretty sad if you are willing to give up something you love to do just because a certain company isn't making games any more. That's like saying you will stop driving if <Insert car manufacturer here> stops making cars.

Most diehard sports fans have greater loyalties to the teams than the players do.

So you're saying..if one of your favourite athletes (Sony,Microsoft,Nintendo) left your favourite team (Gaming). You would not root for the team anymore?

I'm fine with that. There are so many cat manufacturers compared video game companies :)

:lol :lol :lol :lol Dont get me wrong Sony revolutionize the gaming industry, but it doesnt merit for anyone to stop gaming period. That goes to any "Fanboy", dont miss out on great gaming just because your pony is finishing last.

Make or break in what sense. An up turn in quality gaming? Market leadership? Mind share?

I gathered some thoughts through the holidays from various friends who own, do not own a PS3, and honestly the only thing on their minds when it comes to gaming on the PS3 is games. We're of an age where price of games comes into focus way, way more then the price of the console - the Canadian dollar has helped immensely in that regard also.

We all know the games are coming for the PS3, that the quality of the experience will flourish, that I don't doubt. Yet, in 2007, the 360, the PC, the Wii, the DS and the PSP have come into their respective own in many fun ways, so the time we spend gaming isn't exclusive to any single platform. I personally don't care who ends up leading the market, make or break in any sense of the word is hogwash but for one single entity, market leadership.

So for those who are not as fortunate as I, or my friend base, the generation has just begun and there are tens of millions of would-be-console-owners on the table. The thing that could screw everything up in regards to how long a console generation lasts is the Wii, and how Nintendo perceives themselves, perceives the market and perceives technologies in but a few short years. Will they launch an HD powered Wii with a more refined, robust point/waggle functionality, new gizmo's etc? Or will they wait it out and launch Wii 2.0 when Microsoft and Sony are ready.

If I'm a betting man, I'd wager there is very little Sony can do to "make or break" themselves anymore then they already have. Bumps that can go either way will come and go, but it's their competition that holds most of the cards at this point. In other words, right now, in due to future price cuts, bundles, software, etc, Microsoft and Nintendo hold more sway in regards to making or breaking the PS3 than the PS3 does itself.

Just my 2 cents. 8p

No, PS3 may be in trouble, but I have no doubts if PS3 ends up kaput that they'll make every effort to recoup and make up for their mistakes with PS4

For Sony, no.
For the Sony games division, no.
For the Playstation 3, yes.

2007 was all about keeping its head above the water. If sales are healthy in December, I'd say they accomplished that.

There's nothing wrong with a meltdown - it clears the system.

Listen, I respect that you're passionate about your hobby, and you're clearly a big fan of video games. All we're saying is that it's all about the SOFTWARE, not the HARDWARE. I've grown up with a console next to my bed for 20 years. I started with a NES, got a Genesis, SNES, 32X, PS1/2, 360, etc. It's been a wild ride. Trust me, you'll enjoy it a lot more if you give yourself the opportunity to explore the games made by ALL developers, not just games tied to a particular system.

Just the fact that you asked this question means you know nothing about gaming, or sports for that matter!

If my team were the champs for over a decade, and suddenly they didn't make the playoffs and one of their key players left (let's say Yzerman) to New York, I'd follow that team in a heartbeat. I guess the analogy in this case would be Yzerman = a console brand.
