Is 2014 the worst year in recent gaming?

As I sit here playing Dragon Age: Inquisition, knowing that I have Persona Q, Pokemon Omega Ruby and Super Smash Bros.for Wii U coming to me for Thursday, all I can think is no, sorry OP, but for me, 2014 is far from one of the worst gaming years in recent memory.

as a Wii U/3DS gamer......no. it's been a stellar year if I do say so. first, Tropical Freeze came out this year. nuff said. then there's everything else that released. it's kind of ridiculous to think about all of the stellar games I've played this year. I mean, the best Mario Kart and Smash game in their respective series came out this year. that's crazy!

Buy a Wii U, so many awesome games now. I would say this is one of the best years in gaming if you like Nintendo.

Smash Bros. Wii U & 3DS
Pokémon Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire
Persona Q
Mario Kart 8
Fantasy Life
Bayonetta 2 (includes the first game free)

:D

Some games have been disappointing and some launches for otherwise good games have been bad but I'm enjoying gaming quite a bit this year so not IMO.

I got Dark Souls 2, Shovel Knight, GTA V, DKCTP, Mario Kart 8, Smash, Hyrule Warriors, Bayonetta 2 and a bunch of other things I can't think of right now.

2014 was a great year. 2015 will be even better.

I think it all depends on context. I've not played any of those games listed except GTA V which I'm experiencing for the first time on the Xbox One.

You're also forgetting The Wii U, 3DS and iOS platforms. Games have released for those that could be considered the best ever in their respective genre.

I'll try and list a few off the top of my head.

This year we've had:

  • Bayonetta 2
  • Super Smash Bros. for both Wii U and 3DS
  • Tropical Freeze
  • Shovel Knight
  • Captain Toad
  • Shantae
  • Child of Light
  • Monument Valley
  • PT
  • Alien Isolation
  • Framed
  • Mario Kart 8
  • Scram Kitty
  • Retro City Rampage DX
  • Banner Saga
  • Valiant Hearts

Not to mention we got new hardware in the iPad Air 2 and the New 3DS
(Aus only I know)

I'm sure there are loads of others I'm forgetting, but you know what I mean.
Sure there have been plenty of disappointments, that happens, and it's unfortunate and could have been avoided but always try to look on the bright side.
There are always good games around, you just have to dig a little deeper sometimes.

2014 was the year of Blizzard. Hearthstone, Diablo 3 Ultimate Evil Edition, WoW: Warlords of Draenor and the best Blizzcon in years.

Great year for me and still not counting Bayo 2 or Smash.

Wolfenstein
TLOUR
DKC TF
MK 8
Rayman Legends (got it 2014)
Pikmin 3 (got it 2014)
Still playing Black Ops 2 on Wii U

Will get the Metro Redux games, Bayo 2 and Smash.

I think this was a bad year, in terms of quality, for the AAA industry in general but that's that doesn't really say anything about the industry, it just speaks about how most of the major publishers have been treating consumers in this new generation of games and that is with very rushed unfinished titles, with plenty of DLC, purchasable in-game currency and other really intrusive monetisation models.

The many review embargos also speak great lengths about the confidence major publishers have in these new platforms and in their own products. While in most cases they mean that the game is a bloody mess, there have been some examples of decent games in which the embargo was completely needless.

We live in an age of information, and publishers want more of that information to gated off exclusively to outlets they trust, and released only when it's most convenient to them.

I don't think this was a terrible year in games, but it was a terrible years for gamers in terms of consumer rights and the way publishers treated us in general.

Infamous Second Son is the best of the series and despite not liking COD I really enjoyed Advanced Warfare and the general census seems to be it's the best campaign of the series. So gotta disagree with the OP.

PS4 has had the worst first year of any console I've ever owned, no doubt. And it looks to have been a shit year for AAA, sure.

Nintendo's had a decent year though, on both Wii U and 3DS.
Vita has been okay.

For the new consoles probably yea...

Not for PC gaming tho

This was probably the greatest RPG year ever for PC gaming.

Banner Saga
Bound by Flame
Child of Light
Dark Souls 2
Divinity: Original Sin
Dragon Age: Inquisition
Gauntlet
Elder Scrolls online
Elminage Gothic
Fable Anniversary
Final Fantasy III
Final Fantasy IV
Final Fantasy XIII
Final Fantasy XIII-2
Legend of Grimrock 2
Life is Feudal
Icewind Dale
Lords of the Fallen
Risen 3
Shadow of Mordor
South Park
Styx
Trails in the Sky
Transistor
Valkyria Chronicles
Van Helsing 2
Wasteland 2

You can also throw in AssCreed Unity and Far Cry 4 into that mix as well if you consider them RPG's. Plus Archeage released in NA/EU this year as well.

All these games released in 2014 for PC. So many quality titles (and many more I didn't list)....We probably won't see a year like this again for a very long time.

dark souls II meh? are you crazy?

prefering dk1 instead is acceptable. Saying that II is a bad game on a general consensus is beyond hyperbolic.

Buggy Messes:

Assassin's Creed Unity
Halo MCC
GTA Online
Driveclub

DriveClub doesn't deserve to be in that category as it wasn't a buggy mess, definitely not on the consumer side, unlike AC and MCC which are fucking shocking.

Yes. I 100% agree with the thread title. I have been a gamer for 26 years and have never known 12 months filled with such shite as 2014 has been.

Buy a Wii U, so many awesome games now. I would say this is one of the best years in gaming if you like Nintendo.

Smash Bros. Wii U & 3DS
Pokémon Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire
Persona Q
Mario Kart 8
Fantasy Life
Bayonetta 2 (includes the first game free)

:D

Oh damn I forgot I did buy Fantasy Life. I need to put some time into that game soon, what little I played so far is super charming.

It has been one of the greatest for me.

- Tropical Freeze
- Walking Dead S2
- Evil Within
- AC: Unity
- Wasteland 2
- Dark Souls 2
- South Park: SoT
- Wolfenstein: TNO

Amazing variety of games ...

... And countless games from my backlog (Demon's Souls, Vanquish, Wind Waker HD...)

2014 was amazing in gaming

While stuff like Bayonetta 2, Infamous Second Son/First Light, Velocity 2X, and Shovel Knight lifted the year up, theres been too many huge disappointments and delays for me to not look at 2014 like a shitter.

-Dark Souls II hugely disappointed me which is something I never expected at all
-Bungies big new IP they've been working on for like 5-7 years, Destiny, is one of the most content starved games I've ever played.
-Titanfall's popularity died within like the month and also felt a bit too light on stuff.
-Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 was a real let down and a stinker, despite the first one being better than anyone expected.
-Buggy games release broken with online borked and more, Driveclub, MCC and Assassins Creed Unity as the top runners. Also SEGA puts out a new contender for "worst Sonic ever".
- Amazing stuff like Batman Arkham Knight, Monster Hunter 4, and plenty more slip into 2015 making it one of those "who has the time/money?!" years in comparison.

Now, I haven't got around to Evil Within or Shadows of Mordor yet, so they may turn me around, but this year just definitely felt like it featured more letdowns and lows than honest to goodness highs.

I have ridiculous amount of backlog on 3DS and Wii U.
Particularly the 3DS.

Have to go back to Rune Factory someday, or Luigi Mansion, or Phoenix Wright, or Pokemon X...

DriveClub doesn't deserve to be in that category as it wasn't a buggy mess, definitely not on the consumer side, unlike AC and MCC which are fucking shocking.

I think you know what he means. significant portions of the game did not work as advertised when the game released.

Is this just part of the growing pains of a new generation of hardware? I don't remember it being this bad with the PS3 / X360 and PS2 generations.

New IP Disappointments:

Watch_Dogs
Destiny

Buggy Messes:

Assassin's Creed Unity
Halo MCC
GTA Online
Driveclub

Remakes:

Last of Us
GTA V
Halo MCC

Meh Sequels:

COD Advanced Warfare
Dark Souls II
Infamous Second Son

Feel free to mention anything I forgot.

Some of us stopped buying last gen stuf last year ready for the new gen, as I new games in 2013 would make the new systems.

So I get TLOU and GTA 5 unplayed, so for me its been great, add Wolfenstein, Tomb raider....all is good.

Also I enjoyed Destiny and really enjoyed Second son (platinumed)...

Still got Mordor and Metro and Dragon Age Inqisition and Far Cry 4 lined up in the backlog ....good times and too much to play.

Agree about Watchdogs, Driveclub and what I read about MCC, also COD AW is a laggy mess this year (UK)

I think part of my disappointment comes from the games that showed the most promise back in 2013 didn't deliver. Haven't played Bayo 2 and all the new Wii offerings, though I did take a swing at Mario Kart 8 and it was great. Still, this is the year that we were kinda promised the next-gen revolution, yet nothing happened.

Yes titles like DA:I and Shadow of Mordor are good games in their own right, as well as the slew of compelling indie offerings. For the most part though, the hits seemed to be sleeper hits while most of the big sellers tended to be disappointments in one way or another.
Wow, did you go into hibernation during the other generational shifts? Post PS3/PS2 launches were nothing short of being abysmal. This is actually one of the best launch years in comparison to previous ones I've ever experienced. Between my WiiU and PS4, I literally have a stack of games from this year alone. And nice one not mentioning the WiiU. Even counting the WiiU alone I wouldn't be able to keep up with releases.

Certainly not for Nintendo fans.

...really? I think we've had quite a few good games come out this year for Wii U and 3DS.

For the Wii U, we got...

Donkey Kong: Tropical Freeze, Mario Kart 8, Hyrule Warriors, Bayonetta 1/2, and Super Smash Bros. I guess the last important game coming out this year will be Captain Toad. Sure, it's not a ton of software, but it's all really good stuff. Oh, and this isn't including all of the nonexclusive stuff released like Guacamelee, Another World, Shovel Knight, etc.

The 3DS got...

Bravely Default, Yoshi's New Island, Kirby Triple Deluxe, Tomodachi Life, Theatrhythm: Curtain Call, Smash Bros, Fantasy Life, and Pokemon ORAS. Upcoming games include Persona Q, Story of Seasons, and Monster Hunter 4. Once again, not a ton of stuff, but it's all good quality.

If I were stranded on an island for a year and could have one console, it'd be the Wii U. I thought it was a good year, but opinions I guess.

Nintendo Aside

AAA games this year have been fantastic imo.

My top 5 AAA games -

1 - Dragon Age I
2 - Call of Duty AW
3 - Far Cry 4

5 - LPB 3

Fantastic AA games as well -

1 - Shadows of mordor
2 - Dark Souls 2
3 - Evil Within
4 - Sunset Overdrive
5 - Alien Isolation
