Is anyone else going to buy multiple nextgen systems and sell them on eBay for profit

That's a nice rationalization, except people like you are directly affecting supply. Maybe if we could apply your circular reasoning to polygons we wouldn't have thread on GAF about why games don't feature more rounded surfaces.

People unwilling to wait in an 8 hour line get to pay a premium. If they wanted it at a retail price, all they have to do is wait like I did, or pay more on ebay for being lazy.

also: I didn't set a reserve or anything for my auction (back in 2005) to anything ridiculous. I put my starting price at what I paid (with tax) and watched it rocket up in price.

So the ten guys in line behind the scalper who bought ten consoles to scalp are lazy?

Scalpers are bad people and should feel bad about themselves. If a system is actually in demand enough that you can turn a good profit that just means you're probably fucking some kid out of their Christmas present, or at least someone who's just trying to get the system the honest way. If you're so eager for money why don't you, I dunno, earn it?

They are earning it. Honestly, I see no difference between individuals buying low and selling high and stores doing so. Comic books often come with rare variant covers where 1 copy will be printed for every 25 or 50 regular covers. Comic Shops will get some of these variants if their volume on a given title is high enough. Most shop sellers will pull these variants out and sell them for $15-100 (depending on the rarity and desirability) even though they paid something like $1.75 to Diamond (who distributes comics) for the book. Unless you have an extremely generous shop owner, your chances at getting really rare variants at cover price is next to zero. Pawn shops, antique shops, privately owned game shops that deal in retro merchandise, etc all do the same thing. If you think all of those things are scummy, than so be it. However, lets not pretend that this is some uniquely evil occurrence.

I think this is the major problem with scalping. Stores shouldn't let people buy more than one or two units at a time if there is a clear demand.

How would you feel if you waited in line for hours in the cold, but then, the guy in front of you buys the last five consoles?

I know I wouldn't feel too happy. I'm not going to scalp.

I don't have to ask you if you're out of your goddamned mind because if you wait in an 8 hour line and think those who don't are lazy, then I know you're just crazy.

Fuck, haters. I did this with the PS3. Bought two, scalped one on eBay for $1300. PS3 was free. I didn't do it with the 360 and I was kicking myself for a full year. Felt good, man.

That's not how it works at any big box store I've done camp outs for. I camped out for GCN in 2001. Camped out for all current gen systems and worked at Best Buy for a few years in college. Limit is one per customer for this exact reason. I camped for my own PS3 and was the first on the pre-order list at my local Gamestop for the one I sold on eBay.

I made more per hour for just standing in that line than I did at my full time job.

This is you, isn't it?

I think that the Wii has ruined that scene though. Too many people are trying to scalp systems for a profit remembering the Wii situation. As a result, ebay is flooded, and the average price ends up being just slightly above retail after taxes and stuff. All this does is make consoles harder to find/purchase for regular shoppers while not really benefiting the reseller.

Wii did something good for a hardcore gamer after all.

That is earning it. You have to have an imagination to get by in today's world. You have to find your own ways to earn some money because there's just not enough opportunities out there to go around.

The system I sold on eBay was bought by a very nice grandfather, whom I talked to on the phone, for his grandson for Christmas. We can't cherry pick who they go to but I was glad it went to a kid for Christmas.

Just hope next ps4 - xbox are avaliable so scalpers lose money
I pulled out of my pre-order for the Wii U at the last minute because the vibe felt like I might lose. Glad I did and itt honestly made me a little gun shy about doing it for the PS4 and Durango but I think they will be more supply constrained. I have decided to only camp out for my own this year, though. I am not a poor college student any more and I don't know if I'll have the time to list both consoles as well as play the systems I camped for. It can be a lot of work but I'm older and not quite as bold as I was 8 years ago.

Plus, I think I'll let some poor college student have his turn at it since I can afford my own now. It's all quite the experience and I think camping out and exchanging war stories will be good enough this time around. "I'm getting too old for this shit."

I'll very likely scalp one PS4 in hopes of subsidizing my own purchase. More than that is too much effort for me. IMO it's on stores to set 1-per-customer policies. If someone puts in the effort to grab a whole bunch to scalp, more power to them.

I figure if you want one that badly, you'll do what you need to do to secure a pre-order. Otherwise, you wait for stores to get more or pay a premium.

I can see someone doing this over eBay where it's just a faceless transaction, but to do it in a way where you actually communicate with the other person is genuinely kinda baffling.

I was up front with the grandfather. He knew how much I paid for it. We exchanged numbers on eBay to get everything in order to send and he struck up a nice conversation. The only reason you would have a problem with it is if you find it morally objectionable, which neither of us did. We could've been talking about the weather, that was the tone of the convo. I have what I believe to be a very strong moral compass grounded in empathy and I didn't feel bad about it. That's why I'm being so open about it here. *shrugs*

I won't buy multiple consoles, but will already probably try to get one of them on day one. if they're actually going for a lot on eBay due to supply, then I'd be stupid to not sell it. I can always wait and buy one again.

To much work for a very small profit. IF you even manage to sell them at all.

Depends. If you pre-order from any large online shop, you'll get them sent right to your door for free. Dump them on the 'bay, slap a new shipping label on the very same box, head to the post office and you're done. If the hype's there, you can ship all of them off in one trip to USPS. You don't even have to do any packing. If it isn't, you send them back from whence they came, also for free.

If you're chasing delivery trucks, on the other hand, it's a lot tougher.

The Wii U was an anomaly. The PS3 sold at a pretty hefty profit initially, and it launched with nothing in way of software. I don't know about the 360, but Microsoft wasn't what they are today back then. IF the PS4 is the stronger of the two AND actually has software worth a shit at launch, it probably will command a decent enough premium ($100 per unit or more).

Good lord, look at you people. "scumbag!" "asshole!" "no, I would never do that, its scumbaggy!" I have a feeling most of you saying this stuff do worse things on a weekly basis. Trying to make money off ebay is, at the worst, "meh".

Can't get a system at launch because of this (which is not likely, all you guys are gonna wait in the nerd line and you know it)? Then you wait, you wait.

You know, its because of scumbag resellers like you that people have to wait on an 8 hour line to begin with.

It's just as much the fact that people are crack addicts when something like a new system comes out and they NEED IT NOW. Supply, demand. Materialism is a religion to some people, I swear. Just pretend the release date is a couple weeks down the road instead of giving these resellers power, if you hate the idea of it so much.

While I'm not opposed to selling items for a profit, I prefer to do so when it just happens to be something I've held onto for a while that magically appreciated in value, like my copy of Space Hulk, my Metroid Prime Trilogy, my copy of Snatcher for Sega CD... things like that that spent a lot of time in my collection, some of them unopened, that became collectibles that I could part with when I needed extra money.

Buying as many consoles as possible at launch just so they can be flipped for a profit is a dickish thing to do. Let the people that want the consoles have the consoles. When I went to buy the Wii U the guy in front of me in line was hemming and hawing over whether to drop the money on the last one they had in stock at the store I was at (this was on the morning of launch day). The clerk asked me, "If he doesn't buy it, do you plan to pick it up?" Upon hearing this, the guy said "well if he wants it, I'll take it!" and then proceeded to turn around and tell me I could have it for $100 over what he just paid for it. I told him to kindly go fuck himself, went across the street, and just grabbed one at the Best Buy with no hassle at all other than waiting in a short line. Since then, I've hated people that engage in this practice even more.

I would have wanted to kill that guy. Disgusting human being.

I swear if that happened to me, I would have punched the guy in the mouth right then and there. I wouldn't even care about getting arrested or assault charges.

Waiting on line is half the fun.

No its not. Especially when the product releases late November and its really cold. It's really sad that society becomes so frenzied with things, that it causes these lines that makes us look like Communist Russia.

Hate scalpers. Especially the concert ticket variety. Goddamn them..

I see it differently with game systems. You know they will re-supply them. All one has to do is wait. If your favorite music artist comes to town there may actually be more people who want to go than the venue will allow. I still don't know why they don't just have a 2 ticket maximum and have your id attached to the purchase. Then when you arrive you have to provide proof you bought them. It may take longer but at least the real fans will get to go.

With a game system all you have to do is wait. I feel bad for kids who may not get one for Christmas but that's life. You can always buy one after Christmas if they sell out quickly.

In the UK there were many PS3's available so the scalping was not profitable, in fact the complete opposite. A colleague of mine reverse scalped the scalpers that quickly realized they were stuck with multiple PS3's that they were not going to be able to sell at even break even prices.

He'd find the auctions that had finished with no bids and offered to buy the consoles way under cost from the sellers. Sellers were so worried about being stuck with these consoles that they sold to him. He then put them on Ebay at SRP prices and made money that way.

Haha, man. It's not like people are scalping bread and milk and shit. It's an electronic toy. Try and temper your outrage a bit. :P

Fuck scalpers, it's illegal in my country and rightfully so.

I don't expect ps4/iXbox to beat ps3/360 launch numbers anyway.

Man, neogaf is a weird place. I got banned for "hoping for a PC version" (port begging?) for gta V a while back, yet people are straight up saying "fuck you, asshole" to the OP for doing something completely legal, if not a little murky morally. Enjoy your lines.

Hah! Poetic justice.

TIL that I'm a scumbag, human trash, asshole, jerk, scum of society that willingly screw over fellow humanity, jobless idiot, douchebag, jaggoff, gigantic cunt, dick, bottom feeder, etc, for buying two electronic toys and selling one.
