Is anyone NOT enjoying GTA V?

Some criticisms thrown around in here are so weird. The cover system in IV was better? Really? Niko treated walls like they were coated in molasses. Gunplay was better in IV? Yes, shooting people until they turn into jello dancers was so exhilarating. Unarmored enemies taking 5 or 6 assault rifle shots to the chest and getting up fighting afterwards was also a bad part of IV's combat.

As far as driving, I loved the driving in IV, but the driving in V is exciting and much faster. The max speed of a vehicle in IV felt like 60 MPH, along with understeer for most vehicles.

agreed. people are really getting weird now saying they like gta 4. its clear that gta v is a huge improvement over it.

GTAV will be amazing on PC once i can enjoy the beauty of the world they created without squinting my eyes. graphics are crucial when you're dealing with an aging gameplay formula like this.

The game looks like shit and runs like shit.

I'm convinced all the problems with shitty performance recently is a scheme by developers to want to force us to get next gen consoles to stop this.

Please tell me you don't actually believe that it's a conspiracy. You do realize that they are trying to run a massive open world game on 8 year old hardware with 512mb of video ram right?

Nope so far it's been awesome for me. Rockstar has really redeemed themselves in my eyes after IV. I have no serious complaints about anything so far.

Getting a wanted rating when you shoot somebody out in the middle of nowhere with a silenced weapon is not fun, and kills a lot of the enjoyment that could be had just playing around in the open world.

When cops are attacking from every direction it's easy to become overwhelmed without the snap-to targeting, but I really just want to use the free aim during mission encounters.

A little too much of the gameplay is dedicated to dated feeling methods of story delivery; drive here while this guy talks, walk here while this guy talks, drive here so you can listen to this other guy talk, etc.

Other then these nitpicks I'm finding it a very enjoyable experience, much more so than any of Rockstar's previous games.

I'm enjoying it but there are numerous issues:

1. The framerate is all over the place
2. Cars disappearing and re-appearing right in front of you. Yep, that's back.
3. The aiming controls are rather dodgy for anything more than around 20 metres ahead of you. The auto-aim also still has issues with target prioritisation but it is still much better than the manual aiming controls.
4. Enemies have near perfect aim from hundreds of metres away, can be a problem when driving past street gangs.
5. The stupid blue glow when you kill someone, it just makes you think you've been hit.
6. The driving controls themselves aren't bad but the driving physics are very inconsistent; it seems to be a dice roll for whether you are fine after being hit by another car or hit an object or whether you spin wildly out of control.
7. The walking controls are shit, the tap X to run is an outdated mechanic that needs to be taken outside.
8. The missions are all scripted as shit and it is so obvious at times.
9. The missions themselves range from dogshit to highly entertaining
9. The dialogue ranges from good to to cringe-inducing.

The most important thing to gleam is that the game remains enjoyable despite all these hiccups (and there are way more than the above).

It exposed RDR for the joke that it is. There's actually things to do in this game.

You can even hunt in this so red dead can't even hold that over GTA's head.

I think gameplay, setting, and characters are better in RDR. I think GTA lacks some of the charm but I'm only few hours in. RDR a joke though? Nah.

Also, the rap selections are always songs where a guy repeats the same thing at the end of each line with a weird pronunciation.

I've noticed a few, but the one that comes to mind is that "Fuck Thaht" (pronounced like 'aught' in 'caught'.)

Fuck thotttt
Fuck thotttt

Where is that guy from, lol?

I'm not gonna say I'm not enjoying, but I will point out the framerate in this game is ass. Should've known. And I'm not really digging the controls either, same problems I had with GTA4. Everything feels slow and laggy, even the menus. Shooting most definitely feels awful. I haven't played much yet though, but so far it's the same ol same ol.

As someone who hasn't really been into GTA since Vice City (played a bit of San Andreas/IV and felt they were same ol', same ol'), I'm suddenly finding myself interested in this one. Would this be a good point to jump back into a series I thought I was burnt out on? Looking for detailed answers.

For the record, I was the type of GTA player who would just screw around and cause mayhem, but I loved exploring, too.

Full disclosure: Since I'm still early in the game and I don't want to read any potential spoilers etc, I haven't read thru much of this thread (or any GTAV-related one for that matter) so I apologize if this has been discussed before.

I am certainly enjoying myself playing GTAV however the main semi-negative aspect I've noticed is that a game of this magnitude is extremely overwhelming during the first play-through. Personally I have played every console or PC-based GTA game and this has happened to me at some level each time I played the newest title, so it's not surprising but with this one the scope is so massive and with three playable characters it's much more.. noticeable. I feel like the game pulls me in so many directions, which can be considered a good thing since it's fun to just explore and mess around, but other times it seems to be at the expense of good pacing and structure. Maybe it's not necessarily a negative for most people because the scope and level of freedom is very impressive, just for me it is overwhelming. I am sure after playing it for a few weeks this will go away and I will love it to death.

The other unfortunate thing is that the iFruit and Game Manual companion apps are only available on iOS or PC and not Android yet. I love the concept of training Chop or customizing my cars while I'm on the train, doesn't Rockstar realize how many folks use Android worldwide! Sigh..

Played about 15 hours.

So far the only complaints i have are very minor.
Not loving the new car handling, weird stuff in the wardrobe selection, weirdly under used (but amazing) soundtrack, you die too quickly..

The good stuff though is plenty, the game is great.

I like the game overall but definitely not to the extent it seems most do. It has great characters and there are some really fun missions but I also feel like a large chunk of my playtime I haven't actually enjoyed. The main problem is that driving becomes a chore very quickly for me and yet it is probably the thing I spend the most time doing. I need to remember to take cabs more often. Also being chased by the cops is really annoying beyond 1 star because you always seem to keep driving into new groups of them so you basically just have to find somewhere to hide for a few minutes.

I appreciate the freedom and variety of content the game offers and that volume does count for a lot but it doesn't give me the same giddy amazement as it did in the ps2 days, and honestly looking at each mission type or activity on it's own merits not many of them are really any good. It's characters and the fact that it is all in one beautiful continuous world that carries it. I will say that it has been growing on me slowly as I play and I think I'm only about half way so hopefully I'll like it a lot more by the end.

When you think GTA has overly complex controls....it's time to go.

But it does have overly complex controls. I didn't say the controls sucked, but they are not user friendly:

Up button: Phone
Down button: Bring up the character switch menu
Right button: Toggle headlights/interact with pedestrians
Left button: Toggle radio stations.

L2: Aim/Accelerate
R2: Fire weapon
L1: Fire from vehicle
R1: Handbrake

Triangle: Enter/Exit vehicle
Square: Change weapons
Circle: Melee/Cinematic Camera
Cross: Handbrake, Run (tap repeatedly to sprint)

For anyone that maybe isn't familiar with a GTA game, this can be a lot to take in and absorb, and that isn't even all of the functions on foot or vehicle. The game just isn't newbie friendly in that regard. Fortunately, it just takes a little time to get used to.

Is it better than Vice City?

Considering the only worthwhile aspect to Vice City now is the setting and music, yes it's far superior. Vice City's gameplay and mission structure basically made it an expansion pack to GTA 3 (it did come out only a year later after all), with a beach that served no purpose taking up a huge chunk of the right-most island. It was a nice jump from 3 but San Andreas and 5 run laps around it in the gameplay and diversity departments.

VC still has better music though, but you can look that up on youtube. You can't play a game on youtube.

I think gameplay, setting, and characters are better in RDR. I think GTA lacks some of the charm but I'm only few hours in. RDR a joke though? Nah.

What setting, the giant empty desert with nothing to do in it? How is that better than 5 which is packed with things to do, even in its countryside?

What gameplay is better in RDR? The shooting system in GTA5 used Max Payne 3 as its inspiration which was far better than red dead's. There's obviously a shit ton more diversity in the missions and activities than RDR. Modern vehicles are >>>>>>>> slow ass horses as transportation and you don't have to spend a few missions taming them.

But let me guess...RDR is more "immersive" anyway. I can smell when that terrible argument that's used as a crutch for boring games is coming 10 miles away.

Apart from some incongruous pedestrian banter and the headache inducing aliasing V is the best GTA game by far. I'm enjoying the heck out of it.

Im not. It's the same as every other GTA game. Every mission is, go kill someone or steal something and then outrun the police. The driving is still terrible, the shooting is still mediocre, it's just meh. Same old GTA. It's fun for a bit but there is no real substance or depth to the game. If you want mindless fun that will get you off for a couple of hours then GTA5 is fine, if your looking for a refined experience, I would look else where.

This. It literally is the same game more or less. The controls are a little better but the driving still sucks.

I'm not enjoying it as much as others to be sure, but it's OK. I went into GTA straight from SR4 and I really enjoyed that. The games are so different though and I think that's why.

it's more fun than IV, and better in every way I can think of, but the gunplay remains bad. probably not AS bad.

I don't know why they can't make shooting feel impactful and exciting in these games. The cap guns are back.

I bought Vice City and GTA4. It took those to realize that this series is not for me.

As much as I see the appeal, never again.

I actually sold 4 before finishing it. I think GTAV is in a different league. As I said before, it's about the goofy fun. GTAIV had me making moral decisions in almost every mission... the city was difficult to drive around in and dark. I much prefer the comic antics and over-the-top crime fantasy of GTA V.

I'm not enjoying it as much as others to be sure, but it's OK. I went into GTA straight from SR4 and I really enjoyed that. The games are so different though and I think that's why.

I never beat SR4, but I can tell you I feel the exact opposite. I will probably never go back and finish it now that GTA is out.

So after playing it some more, I have one more complaint (besides the aiming reticule.) Flying planes is pretty annoying. The turbulence makes it a goddamn herculean effort to make a clean landing, or really to just stay on course. I can appreciate the realism factor, but I mean gee whiz.

I'm annoyed at Rockstar's refusal to look at the improvements that have been made by other developers in the genre and seem content to truck along with the issues that have plagued GTA games since GTA3. Controls are still unwieldy. You pretty much have to use the insane auto aim controls to have any success. Driving is still shit. They somehow made flying worse. Not putting directions in the environment means you're going to be spending more time looking at the minimap than at the road. Why they still kept the tap X to run thing, I have no idea. And they still flood the game with crap that just isn't fun to do. Seriously, Towing missions?

That said I'm enjoying the game alot for the characters and story and I like that they made it more light hearted like the PS2 era games.

I think I could definitely be enjoying it more. A little background, I've only played IV because I did not like the vulgarity of the games, but I enjoyed IV more. Shooting, for whatever reason, felt better any the killing more motivated by the story. Another thing, I enjoyed the Niko arc way more than what I am seeing of the GTAV characters. I also like the story mission personalities of IV more.

Still don't have a final verdict, but those are my thoughts thus far.

I am enjoying it, do not get me wrong

But so far i do not have the same affection toward it as i do toward Vice City or even GTA3 and SA. The world and tone is extremely well done, but i am not enamored with it like i was with Vice City and the whole 80s theme or even SA with its early 90s tone.

Whereas everything in those games was solely molded to create this specific art style, sound to really sell the idea that you really were in the 80s, in GTA5 everything is scattered, the music selection is pretty good but its all over the place.

I dont think its me being jaded or anything because with Red Dead i played the shit out of that game and beat it in 2 days, then i bought he PS3 version and did the same. That game like SA and Vice City just sold me on this period piece and i was deep into it.

I am a third into GTA5 if the stats are anything to go by, and i absolutely not all that into it, hell i am playing Diablo 3 on consoles right now, a game i already put 800+ hours on the PC. Ill beat GTA5 soon enough but its almost like i am playing it to justify my purchase and because the game is getting 10/10 everywhere and everyone is crazy over it.

I'm around 30 hours in and kind of done with it at this point.

I'm done with the main storyline. I do have a ton of side missions left that I could tackle. But for whatever reason I just don't have the drive to do so. When I finished the story in VC/SA, I was still going around exploring, getting into trouble, and finishing up the remaining side missions. As great as this game is, I think I'm just sort of tired of that whole formula..

It was a great ride while it lasted, but I think that GTA games just don't have the same staying power that they once did for me.

It's well made, it looks great and the mechanics are solid to the core, but I think this is going to be my last GTA. Don't get me wrong, from the few hours I've played it it's ten times better than GTAIV, but once I finish it I'm going to take a cold shower and swear myself off the franchise. Maybe I've just gotten older or crumodgeony, but it's just not my thing anymore and I'm OK with that. Everything is going to be open world next-gen anyway. I just think we've gotten to a point where everything is so realistic (GTAIII was more of a cartoon than anything) that I'm OK with sitting out the biggest thing every five years. I think I've gotten to that weird point in a persons life where all the music sounds horrible and you are kind of horrified by the movies and games your younger selves play and watch. God damnit, I'm old. Sorry.

It is vastly improved over 4, so much so that I don't think I could say it is anything but great even though I hated 4. However, there are dozens of small design decisions that piss me off regularly.

They seem unable to incorporate a modern control scheme, they insist on realism in a lot of places where it hurts the game like the garage system and clothing system, and then have crazy over the top stuff elsewhere.

Still not finished with it, but I hope the next iteration modernises the formula besides graphics and physics.

Jaggies everywhere and tons of input lag. Still an incredible, incredible achievement Rockstar made on these consoles. The game is fantastic.

Needless to say, GTA V would really shine on PS4/PC... Just imagine this game with AA and 60fps... It must be done.

I haven't played it too long but it seems fine

The whole "it's satire of the American dream!" Shit is so in your face right in the beginning that I don't know if anyone at Rockstar has ever heard of subtlety

No radio stations stand out immediately like in other games, and the hilarious commercials are anything but hilarious

I'm not enjoying it because I haven't bought it yet. Still busy with w101, and I secretly hope for the 60fps version to be announced soon ;)

How can someone NOT enjoy this game?? It's like every time a huge AAA game comes out there's a guy or two really trying to find out if a game is bad because it got too many 10/10's and sold millions of copies in hours. Go rent the game if you're that skeptical and pessimistic and if you aren't enjoying it, return it. Oh and the guys who are saying anything in IV is better are clearly on hard drugs. There is nothing in IV done better.

The gameplay I've seen makes it look exactly like Max Payne.

It's not exactly like Max Payne, unfortunately. They've taken a fair bit of Max Payne 3's improvements, but there's still GTA jank where there should no longer be. It's more like RDR 1.5 except with worse sounding guns, and no close quarters animations, and no limb specific damage......

.....so it's actually more like RDR in beta with some Max Payne 3 sprinkled in. Step back from MP3 in any case.

GTA V is a GTA game with GTA gameplay. If you love that type of gameplay, you'll love this.

Definitely an improvement over GTA IV.

Big improvement in the mission quality, they are just so much fun!!

Lots of exploration to do.

The frame rate is not as bad as people make it out to be - I have had it hitch a few times here and there but thats about it. I'm really starting to wonder if it's peoples consoles.

Gunplay is an improvement over GTA IV.

Default was set to that auto-aim crap. Once setting it to Manual Aim, it's much better - Lots of fun

There can be a bit of jaggies at times, but it's a console game, this is normal.

Earlier I mentioned I preferred GTA IV's driving, though I enjoy GTA V's, I think I still prefer GTA IV's a little bit more.

Though if I must say, with so many open world games out now that I have played, the GTA gameplay formula, even though GTA V did expand a little bit on this, is slowly getting boring for me a little bit! - GTA IV, SR4, Just Cause 2, Sleeping Dogs.

When you play so many open world games with the same open-world gameplay formula, it starts becoming a little stale. Not as stale as the AC gameplay formula though.

I'd give GTA V a 8.5/10 - Big improvement over GTA IV.

TLOU still my GOTY

I'm probably 40% through i don't have very many cimplaints. I don't mind the gunplay, i like the driving ESPECIALLY the motorcycles. I had terrible pop ins in the opening but have only noticed a few shadow pop ins while playing. I'd say The cops are tougher than IV, speed traps get me everytime, but i usually enjoy hiding from them. Flying is a little tough but im glad, hopefully we don't get 15 aholes flying fighters bombing everyone in MP.

My biggest complaint is the fact that you cant rob or kill store workers. I kinda wish they would've took the SR approach and let you rob anyone that you point your gun at.

I'm enjoying it, but the language restricts me to later in the evening when our toddler is asleep and it really hasn't grabbed me and made me want to stop playing other games I'm currently tinkering with - FF14, Marvel Heroes, and Madden w/ friends.
