Is Dragon Quest VIII worth getting into at this point?

I forgot how hard the octopus guy is. Wiped out my party in 3 turns. :( I remember there being some trick to beating him.

Damn, these screenshots look so good, if only we had more games with that kind of art style.
Ni no kuni gives me a DQVIII vibe.I just wish its overworld was more like VIII's.

I played it earlier this year and really enjoyed it. Overall speed/pacing of the game was quite slow compared to other games in the series, but I know a lot of people enjoyed that aspect about it.

Top tier: 5 = 3 > 7 = 8 = 4
Second tier (still good): 9 > 6 > 2 = 1

I wonder if SE will make an HD remake for ps3/vita that has improved loading times. That might make it more bearable to play at least.

I've had the game for years and still haven't gotten around to playing it. I'd probably save it until I'm finished with DQVII and DQIX and VIII is the only DQ game that remains to be finished...

A lot of the older DQs are still worth playing, this has arguably remained relevant even longer given what happened with JRPGs this generation. Sounds like the only game worthy of standing up to it on consoles is Xenoblade really, certainly I doubt anything else compares for the thrill of running around the world.

I'm torn. I loved the world, characters (Angelo and Yangus <3), music, and voice work, but the random battles, slow pace, and loooooading kinda killed it for me. If you don't mind any of the latter stuff, then go for it.

DQ8 was incredible. It's also one of my favorite game soundtracks. Kinda lame, but I really enjoy listening to it when I'm just walking about the city.

You can't go wrong with any weapon on any character, though I find bows a bit lacking.
The #1 cause of people finding DQ8 difficult or finding that the battles take too long is not using boomerangs on the hero, though. Multihitting weapons, especially boomerangs, just make everything so much better.

Also, you can totally go wrong by using scythes with Yangus. Yuck.

I've got a copy of Dragon Quest VIII sitting on my PS2 just collecting dust. Is it worth getting into this late into a next generation ?
Absolutely probably one of my favorite RPGs and the last traditional Dragon Quest to boot.

I played this game a TON and beat absolutely everything you can on it. I don't really remember much about the story, though. I just liked running around killing things and I liked my party. They did really well in giving each member different roles and even making grinding fun.

Yeah, it's called "level up ten times"

Well, that's certainly one way to do it. But it is not necessary. You can beat Khalamari at level 9 or so, I do it every time I play the game.

I don't do anything special. I just buy some herbs, lower his defense with helm splitter (yay axes), and raise tension before attacking, using the hero's tension to heal if really necessary.

It's definitely a good game, it was just kind of annoying that you had to beat the final boss first before you can actually complete the story and get the "True Ending" so to speak. The armor though was awesome.

Abso-fucking-lutely.

I'm in the middle of a playthrough now as I never beat it the first time. 80 hours in, just got to Tryan Gully. Already have liquid metal sword, helm, armor... Best scythe/whip/bow for my other party members. Ready for the end game soon i think, and then maybe the post game content.

The game is one of the best rpg's of the last decade and certainly worth your time. It still looks good blown up on my 50" led so I wouldn't worry about visual fidelity either. My only advice is to use a faq for recipes so you can always have good equipment.

Wait, what? I never knew anything about a true ending. This may be my excuse to revisit one of my most favorite game worlds :D

And doesn't it kind of make sense to beat the final boss in order to complete the story?

After the credits, a movie is shown that clues you in on the location of the post-game dungeon (and you can see it again any time by staying in an inn on your clear save). Going there leads to more story and a different ending if you complete it and then go back to beat the main game boss again.

After you beat the final boss, a new area unlocks which completes the story arc regarding the Hero and explains some loose ends. After you complete the area, beat the final boss again, and you'll get a different ending (not completely different, but enough to be interesting).

-edit-
Beaten! Also, you get some awesome appearance changing armor.

What's with the bias against last-gen games? DQVIII is one of the best RPGs I've played. I'd recommend it 10 years from now if you were to ask.

Wow, thanks for the info!

Looks like I may have to "suffer" through the whole game again now...shucks ;)

It'd probably be fun to do again but I'm on a long journey of discovering Megaten games.
