Is facial hair ok at interviews these days?

Nah if they don't want to hire you based on a standard beard, you don't want to work for them anyways.

(Especially if you are in a tech field)

It's been a long time since I interviewed for a new job but back when I did I always went in looking as conservative as possible so my hair would be cut super low and any facial hair I had at the time would be gone. Once I got a feel for the environment I'd grow my hair and beard back out later.

You never really know what the person interviewing you expectations are, or how hip (or not) they may be.

Depends on the size of the bank, honestly.

Finance is one of those corporate cultures where facial hair can be an issue.

Tbh I think it should be fine, if clean it up really nice and wear something snazzy. As long as you smile and act professional it will be a non-issue. Everyone's wearing beards to interviews these days.

Looks good to me. So long as it's well groomed why not.

I'm young but are people in corporate really that tight about things like this? They expect you to be clean shaved and short hair?

I have a beard and it certainly isn't the norm in the corporate environment in which I am employed. At a comparatively "young" 41, however, perhaps some of my colleagues who might otherwise object see it as my youthful rebellion. ;-)

I've hired plenty of individuals and while opinions vary, I can tell you that a well-groomed beard would never enter into consideration. When I started here almost seven years ago, we were suit-and-tie, then we hired a new CAO out of California a few years back and quickly changed to business casual. Suits only make an appearance during travel, or visits from regulating authorities.

You have no idea what the corporate culture is until you're actually employed.

Just shave it to be safe. You'll know within a day of being hired if a beard is kosher or not.

It's fine unless you're interviewing at a place that has a policy. The only two places I know of off of the top of my head with "no beard" rules are Disney parks and McLaren.

Keep it clean shaven for the interview. Nothing else matters, you want to present yourself in the best way possible for your interview. Besides, facial hair grows back.

Should be good. I'm in the Bible Belt and I see people working at banks with visible forearm tattoos and stuff. The world is less uptight about image these days it seems.

OP updated with pics of the style(s) I usually rock. Let me know what you guys think. Thinking of keeping it and just cleaning it up really well. I never usually go clean shaved.
Looks fine to me.

People might tell you "shave it just in case, it'll grow back", and maybe that's true, but do you really want to work for such inane people? Depends on how much you want this job I guess. Besides, some dudes look too boyish and young without facial hair and might not be taken seriously so it doesn't always work that way.

Yeah thank god that people try to be a bit more themselves even at their job. In general the beard just has to look good on you. If you cannot really grow one, shave it. If you are somebody that can grow one here and there...trim and care for it - if it looks good - awesome.

Businesses here at my place are not that strict anymore. I am just wearing a nice shirt at work and that is all. Even wearing Nike Free Run so... nobody complains. :)

My bf has a hobo beard. He got a position for Head of Department.

Just saying, most companies worth working for (from my perspective, I hate corporate bullshit) will not give a crap.

HR person that will interview you doesn't represent the whole company though, so if you're unlucky you're just fucked, not worth it

Always depends on the company and the kind of job you're applying for, but generally if it looks good on you and isn't stubble or some massive beard installation you'll be fine.

God I am so glad I work in an industry where they don't care about petty things like my facial hair.

Typically finance / insurance type positions prefer a shaved face.

Mate, if its at a bank then shave it for the interview. You can grow it back after. Why take the chance? Its at a bank! The one place where their the most uptight about this stuff. If it was a different industry it would probably be fine.

Overt brag thread about OP's beard?

Really though, that beard should be fine for your interview. Good luck with it.

I really hate the whole facial hair/hair cut thing when it comes to jobs/professionalism etc. Where does it originate from? When will it go?

I have thick curly hair and thick facial hair. I prefer growing it, it suits my Mediterranean complexion and face shape. Luckily in my office job it's ok, but I'd hate to always be clean shaven and boring short hair b/c of reasons.

I've worked for a few banks and financial institutions (currently a major US one). None ban facial hair, the only policy is that you're well groomed. You'll be fine with how you look in the OP. If they have a problem with it, suggest you would be doing yourself a favour by not working for them, because they'd probably be fuckers to work for.

Some interviewers (especially in banking) prefer their applicants be clean-shaven. Some don't have a preference. None will hold being clean-shaven against you.

You have nothing to lose by shaving your beard, and potentially a lot to gain. So if you want to maximize your chances of landing this job, just shave it off.

I wouldnt work at a place I couldnt have my beard, its pretty much a part of me now. But then again, my field is artistic, so thats not a problem.

It will absolutely depend on their larger corporate culture, for a lot of more traditionally minded credit institutions, I'd ditch the beard just in case.

Depends on the age of the interviewer but that would be difficult to determine. An older person I think generally prefer a clean look.

You can also think it this way. There is usually many others who compete for same job. Most try to look as conservative as possible. If you look clean with your beard, you instantly stay better in interviewers mind. "oh that guy with beard" you know what I'm saying? Just one more thing to help yourself stand out against others.

I work in an office that unofficially frowns on facial hair (for the record I also wair a suit). Until the day of my interview I always had a beard, since that day I never had one again.

I wouldn't have gotten the job if I went into the interview with a beard.

Your first pic looks fine. That's a groomed beard.

The other pics can be interpreted as either you forgot to shave/didn't bother.

If you consider that to be "light", you're better off shaving it off.

Basically, if you're at a situation where a person has to guess whether your facial hair is a conscious choice or simply the result of being too busy/lazy to shave, you're better off without it.

If you wouldn't get the job because of a little facial hair like that, I doubt you'd want to work in that environment in the first place. I'd echo the majority of the thread: if it's well groomed, it's good.

If a company doesn't hire you because you got a beard, you (or any decent human being for that matter) most likely shouldn't work at a place like that. It's 2016 for fucks sake.

Agreed, and there's a lot of outdated thinking here about who banks will and won't hire. Aside from being well groomed, as I already mentioned, the only additional restrictions I have seen on banking personnel is for client facing staff who must cover up tattoos and take out piercings. And client facing staff are only a tiny number of overall bank employees.
