Is Fallout New Vegas any good?

Huh? Yes there are. There's like 3-5 for each skill and they increase skills by 3 (or 4 w/ Comprehension).

And yeah, they can break F3, but it was at least fun trying to go find them all.

Oops you're right, I was thinking of the bobbleheads. Anyway, if I want to collect shit I'd play Banjo Kazooie.

I think you might be ignoring the rather tangible effects on character progression and balance of making everywhere open from the start.

Then again, if all you're interested in is exploring muddy brown holes in the wasteland, i guess that wouldn't be prioritized so highly :P
Not ignoring anything. I loved Oblivion, Skyrim and Fallout 3, all of which do the 'go anywhere from the start' thing quite well in my opinion.

I'm not aware of how Banjo-Kazooie does collectibles, but if the collection provides a noticeable benefit (e.g.skill/stat boosts), then I don't mind finding them to min/max - it's fun at that point. Also gives a good reason to explore areas you may otherwise not.

I'd rather have a narrative-driven reason myself, areas existing solely to contain collectibles without an interesting back story is one of my biggest complaints about modern Bethsoft RPGs.

The surface area is larger in Fallout 3 (I think), that's the only thing F3 does "better" than NV. I think NV feels cramped after a while. If you enjoy rpgs NV is a must buy imo.

I'm talking about the way the game technically jumped up over oblivion. There's alot less jank, which I would like to see from the next fallout game.

You seem tense..

technically sure I guess

I mean it still looks old and people look lifeless and animations are crap but it's way better than oblivion and new vegas sure

unfortunately following that basic technical improvement they grabbed the little depth that was remaining in the elder scrolls series and threw it off a cliff in favor of a very misguided impression of what perks actually are

I really have to wonder if todd howard has actually tried a role playing game in his life.

I mean the darkness 2 had more rpg depth than freaking skyrim

What's the best way to play this? I heard lackluster things about hard-core mode. I modded fallout 3 to make Rads an actual threat as well as other things to make what I did more of a choice (survival aspects). Should I just play normal difficulty or are there a certain set of mods to make hard-core mode how it should be?

Look up Josh Sawyers mod. He was the lead designer of the game and made a mod to restore the game to his original vision.

There was J.E. Sawyer's mod, but I've never tried that. Playing with Project Nevada on Hardcore/Very Hard right now and it's not punishing or anything.

Let me try and remember all the fallout 3 party members

Greaser, dog, asshole ghoul who won't save me, asshole mutant who wont save me, thats all i remember

I remember and love everyone in NV except for bland ass Boone, but he's better than everyone in 3 anyway.

Yeah, I'll second this. The best way to play NV is in hardcore mode, with JE Sawyer's mod. For your first play through, I wouldn't use any other gameplay mods, but there are some nice texture packs and other graphics mods that make the game quite a bit nicer to look at.

Project Nevada + Jsawyer + all the unfinished content for first time. Project nevada is such a great mod, sprinting is a necessity.

The fuck you said about Boone? I bet you are the kind of ass that plays the Witcher 2 and chooses to go with the elf guy who isnt Roche.

Funny this thread should pop up. Just started playing it a couple days ago and I'm level 11. Pretty addicting game but I'm not quite ready to declare it better than FO3 quite yet. FO3 had me by the balls when I played it in 2010. Washington DC was fucking awesome and the narrative and the way the story started out was mezmorizing. Loving the perks and weapons so far though. Back to playing :)

Project Nevada makes the game really interesting.

I made a sort of "Genocide run", where I'm not allowed to talk to anyone optional, and must kill every NPC on sight, friendly or not.

The most noticeable effects of PN on this run (that I can easily remember) is that my health and my enemies health will not increase past level 1 and the SPECIAL system becomes far, far more important.

My Intelligence and Agility are at minimum, so I'm super slow in more ways than one. Low HP combined with absolutely crippling weapon reload times make it so some big high level fights end in a blink of an eye. I can try and reload my bazooka out in the open, but that's no good when my enemies' hail of bullets make me stagger and interrupt my reload process.

Boone got me into some hairy ass shit with his shoot first ask questions later policy in regards to the Legion.

I can live without bullet time and all the other junk, but sprint is soooo convenient. Also kinda gamebreaking since nothing in the game is equipped to handle a gottagofast Courier.

Just finished the Dead Money DLC and loved it. Just got one more to do....Lonesome Road. Which is better in your opinion?

Also, just to be clear, playing all four DLC add-ons *is* recommended before completing the main game....right?

It works out either way, but Lonesome Road is best done after all the other DLC chapters.

Good to hear someone who liked Dead Money, as I know others might've been put off by it but IMO I thought it was the strongest narratively of all the FNV DLC.

Well there is no post game and Lonesome road will reference the inevitable conflict over Hoovers Dam.

There is a point of no return and after you finish the main game ,you can't go back to free roam so you should play all DLC beforehand

My favorite one was Lonesome Road despite it's terrible writing, there are lots of new toys to play with and Ulysses is a great character. I also enjoyed Old World Blues despite not digging it's humor and dialogue much and Dead Money was fun and challenging. Honest Hearts was meh

There is a mod that fixes the post-game problem. I had a save game during the final attack and didn't have a prior save, so the mod allows you to finish and it resets you back on the wasteland after the ending. Finally got to do the DLC!

Pretty sure the game won't let you play the DLC after completing the main story.

IMO -

Old World Blues > Dead Money > Lonesome Road >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Honest Hearts

I almost didn't play it because of all the sh*t it got, but I was pleasantly surprised. The first half was kind of annoying, but once you get into the actual casino it really shines.

It takes a lot of guts to play one of the buggiest games of the generation with a single save file.

It's too early to tell since it only came out just last gen, but it might be my favorite game. (With a few content restoration and graphic mods)

I loved Dead Money to, I find it weird how a lot of people seem to dislike Dead Money but love Dark Souls.

Honest Hearts:
A wide open world. Lots of little quests to do. Interesting new companions.

Dead Money:
Very compelling story. Completely new style of gameplay. Lots of new followers and levels. The map can be a bit confusing, and it focuses a lot more on combat than anything else in the game ever did. That puts some people off.

Old World Blues:
Big open world. Insanely hilarious script. Really really good perks and a new home base.

Lonesome Road:
Linear DLC. Very short. Basically it's a meta-story to your character. Lots of Deathclaws. Wraps up the game. Disappointing for those expecting anything like the other DLC.

Basically all the DLC, in their released order, has hints mentioning the other ones, and there most definitely is an underlying story between them all. Play Lonesome Road last. Hopefully by then you're level 50 and don't give a crap about XP.

Also, the XP you get from the DLC is obscenely high. You'll level up a LOT from these.

I was really liking Old World Blues until I went outside and got rocked by the cannon fodder enemies right near your home base. I stopped playing once I realized that practically everything respawns when you go inside a building or sleep or whatever.

Maybe I was at a bad level for the DLC but I had been handling the rest of the game pretty well, including Dead Money and Honest Hearts.

The OWB enemies are best dealt with using the weapons you get in there. IE: The Sonic Emitter, Elijah's advanced LAER or the Protonic inversal axe.

It takes a lot of guts to play one of the buggiest games of the generation with a single save file.
I had multiple save files, but really only at major branching points. My most recent one before the ending was hours and hours ago.

It's weird. I would have plenty of crashes to desktop after extended playing, but never any save file issues.

Thank you gentlemen for your swift replies and suggestions.

Now...now that Dead Money is done and over with, my map(along with the perk that shows every area I have yet to visit) shows quite a bit of places I've yet to explore. At this point, I am thinking about spicing up my game by adding the "A World of Pain" mod, just so I can amp up the exploration bit and keep my desire to roam New Vegas alive and fresh more a bit longer.

Question is, will installing AWOP have any negative effects on my saved game, despite being this far into the game? Or is AWOP best played from a fresh new game? I love FNV but really have no desire to play it all over from the beginning(at least not yet).

I spent all my bug, glitch and jank tolerance points on fallout 3, I just couldn't deal with it anymore in NV and quit after it crashed on me for the 5th time in 5 hours time

I've had no issues with NV on PC. PS3 version was a nightmare when the save file grew in size. Playing each version was like night and day.

If you play on PC and it has been fixed there, go for it. I played the vanilla 360 version and it was unplayably bugged. I can tolerate bugs in a game like this but to me NV was plain broken. I enjoyed it for solid 20 hours or so but once I reach New Vegas I has enough. Never looked back. Haven't bought a Obisidian game since and probably never will again.
